After a fall from an overpass that leaves a kid with a broken back and other injuries, cops apply voltage up to 19 times. The official explanation: "He refused to comply with the officer's instructions." According to the police, the kid was making incoherent statements about threatening cops. On the other hand, a police captain on the video tells that their actions were done also to protect the kid, to prevent him from getting into traffic.

Doctors believe 16-year-old Mace Hutchinson broke his back and heel after falling, as his injuries are consistent with such a fall. The boy's family does not understand why police would have tasered the the teen 19 times after he was so seriously injured.

The teen's father said that the use of the taser caused Mace to develop an elevated white blood cell count, leading to a fever that delayed the young man's otherwise immediate surgery by two days.

The U.S. Supreme Court's landmark decision on guns last month may not affect a Bridgeport man's pistol permit or a Schenectady man's ability to buy a weapon despite an order of protection against him. But it will likely take months if not years -- and a logjam of legal cases backed by the gun lobby -- to clarify the significance of the high court's decision affirming the right of individuals to own firearms.

The plaintiff in the Supreme Court case that struck down Washington's 32-year-old handgun ban filed a new federal lawsuit Monday, alleging the city's new gun regulations still violate an individual's right to own a gun for self-defense.

A paralyzed man claimed in a lawsuit Thursday that seven Chicago police officers dragged him from a car and beat him unconscious when he was too slow to obey their order to get out of the vehicle.

Daniel Casares claims the officers engaged in excessive use of force and battery. His federal lawsuit against the city and seven officers asks for unspecified damages.

Casares is a quadriplegic as a result of a car accident four years before the traffic stop, his attorney Blake Horwitz said.

A federal appeals court refused Monday to throw out lengthy prison sentences for two Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting an unarmed illegal immigrant and lying about it.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans upheld four of the convictions against Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean, including those that resulted in their lengthy sentences. But the three-judge panel threw out their convictions for tampering with an official proceeding.

Morton Grove's landmark handgun ban, imposed 27 years ago, died quietly Monday night, as the suburb's Village Board bowed to a new legal reality and repealed the ordinance.

The board's 5-1 vote came in response to last month's ruling by a divided U.S. Supreme Court that struck down a similar ban. The high court ruled that the 2nd Amendment protects a person's right to own a firearm for self-defense.

Fighting in court to try to keep the law would cost money the village does not have, officials said.

Upon reflection, then, the ethical judgment expressed by the GKN pastor seems to represent fairly well the mainstream EU attitude toward moral issues like guns and abortion. If part of what characterizes a civilization is a consensus on moral issues, then the idea of a unified Western civilization encompassing Europe and the United States is an illusion. A consensus that diverges on such fundamental questions of the right to life and responsibilities of self-defense is simply no consensus at all.

Ed.: An interesting argument. What say you KABA readers? Does the disagreement about RKBA between the U.S. and Europe effect the cohesion of western civilization?

Mr. Howard said, "If you don't want to pay the proposed taxes, don't buy or sell guns." He also said, "If these taxes lead to fewer guns and less hunting in Massachusetts, I call that a bonus!" That's a typical anti-gun statement.

How would Mr. Howard like to have to qualify and pay $200 every six years for a "tree-huggers" license? I bet he would give up that sport in a hurry and complain the whole time about it!

Did you enjoy that big juicy hamburger for dinner last night? I had venison. My dinner had a chance to live, not your beef!

Anthony Bianchini ... is right about the Second Amendment protecting an individual right to bear arms, though he goes overboard in chastising Harry Rosenfeld for “elitism’’ in interpreting the Second Amendment as referring only to a “collective right.’’ There’s nothing elitist about wanting to stop gun violence.

However, I think Bianchini makes a different error. The Constitution is about defining the nature and range of the federal government’s power. The Second Amendment’s seemingly ambiguous reference to state-regulated militias was ... clearly dealing with the conflicting claims of federal power vs. state power.

Already, the extremist Violence Policy Center is exploiting ignorance and fear to recommend banning anyone under 18 from shooting ranges, to call for local audits to harass and close ranges, to ban the use of assault weapons, to mandate a moratorium on new range construction, and get this to halt firearms safety training because any possible benefits are outweighed by the risk of lead poisoning.

Another attempted sexual assault on the U of I 's campus has police talking about self-defense.

A 20 year old student told police she was grabbed by a man Saturday night and dragged between two parked cars. A witness scared the man away. Add this to the growing list of recent sexual and attempted sexual assaults on campus, four since mid-June.

Police say the key to safety is education, and being pro-active about your safety.

It was nice to see the almost conciliatory editorial from the Post-Bulletin in regard to the Permit to Carry Law. Yes, it has been a success -- supporters knew it would be. One only had to look at the success in other states that had already passed such laws.

The crying and bickering from the anti-gun establishment and politicians in Minnesota was pretty childish.

... You stated there were no documented cases where a permit holder used his gun in self defense. My guess is that there were DGU's (Defensive Gun Uses) in Minnesota but they were just never reported for various reasons. How do you tabulate such cases? Just because they didn't get reported doesn't mean they didn't happen.

Heller II: Heller Harder

Back on July 18, I followed 2nd Amendment case plaintiff Dick Heller to the D.C. courts and watched him begin the laborious process of registering an old revolver. The chatter in the crowd, and among reporters, was how onerous D.C.'s laws still were, even after the city's gun ban was overturned. Ten days later, Heller has a solution.

Dick Heller, et al., filed a complaint (For Declaratory Judgment, Injunctive Relief, and Writ of Mandamus) against the city today to force them to comply with the US Supreme Court ruling in the District of Columbia v. Heller and to protect our individual rights such as the right to defend ourselves in our own homes.

The man who successfully challenged the D.C. handgun ban before the U.S. Supreme Court filed a second federal lawsuit yesterday, alleging that the District's new gun-registration system is burdensome and continues to unlawfully outlaw most semiautomatic pistols.

Dick A. Heller, a 66-year-old security guard who lives on Capitol Hill, and two other plaintiffs allege in the lawsuit that the D.C. government violated the letter and the spirit of the landmark Supreme Court decision, issued June 26, that struck down the District's decades-old handgun ban.

They are tired of being pushed around and are taking their security in their own hands:

In the five years since the Anglo-American invasion of 2003, murders and abductions have driven about half of the 800,000 Christians who once lived in Iraq to flee the country.

Checkpoints manned by civilians armed with heavy machine guns and assault rifles have received official backing in Christian villages on the Ninevah plain in northern Iraq, where their presence dates back to the missions of St Thomas the apostle.

I believe that the Supreme Court made the right judgment in the case over the right to bear arms.

The problem is that conservative Republicans have been saying for three decades that judges should not make laws, rather they should interpret the Constitution literally.

With the Supreme Court's decision on the right to bear arms, the justices have rewritten the Constitution.

The Second Amendment, the right to keep and bear arms states, "A well regulated militia, being a necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms should not be infringed."

As a result, my friend Ken and I have decided to form a Bostonian militia to defend our personal turf from the other three hundred-odd million people who share this country with us and who, by the way, also have access to firearms. ... With that goal in mind, we are thinking of purchasing the following weapons, with their corresponding ammunition:

o Two Smith & Wesson 910S 9mm handguns, to fiercely confront any aggressors that dare penetrate our territory.
o A pair of Colt Python Elite revolvers, in case the aggressors become more daring and penetrate our territory, lustily.
o Two M16, 5.56 caliber rifles, to defend ourselves even more fiercely from the aggressors that… well, you know.

In the September 2008 issue of Liberty, one Jon Harrison writes:

The Supreme Court ... has recently handed down a couple of awful decisions. ... But as the current term came to a close, the court (by a 5-4 vote) struck a great blow for liberty by preserving the meaning of the Second Amendment. Because of its decision in ... Heller, citizens will retain the fundamental right to keep and bear arms. Thank you, Justices Roberts, Scalia, Thomas, Alito, and Kennedy.

WI: Oh, Deere! Man Charged Over Lawn Mower Shooting

Keith Walendowski was charged after Milwaukee law enforcement responded to a call about a man shooting his lawn mower. Angry that his mower wouldn't start Wednesday morning, Walendowski told police, “I can do that, it's my lawn mower and my yard so I can shoot it if I want." He has been charged with felony possession of a short-barreled shotgun or rifle and misdemeanor disorderly conduct while armed.

I’m not a fan of guns, much less the sawed-off shotgun; and yes, I readily acknowledge the man broke the law, but c’mon. Violently doing away with inoperable outdoor equipment is surely what our forefathers had in mind when they wrote the second amendment.

McCain might explain, in fairly specific details, what an Obama-Reid-Pelosi America would look like, and cost, Americans - from defeat in places like Iraq, to higher taxes, to no oil drilling, to no restrictions on abortion, to greater restrictions on the second amendment, to much else. This argument won't carry the day - but it could help by reminding voters what Obama's version of "change" might look like.

Ed.: Please, authors, do not use the phrase "a modest proposal" in your writing unless you:

a) actually *intend* to promote or disparage cannibalism and infanticide, or are
b) actually being satirical.

Thanks.

A rookie cop - the son of a highly respected New York City detective - has been stripped of his badge and gun after being caught on video viciously attacking a bicyclist who was part of a Times Square demonstration. '

The startling YouTube video shows Officer Patrick Pogan, 22, apparently setting his sights on - and then tackling - a bicyclist as he peddled along Seventh Avenue as part of last Friday's controversial Critical Mass ride.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
You are bound to meet misfortune if you are unarmed because, among other reasons, people despise you....There is simply no comparison between a man who is armed and one who is not. It is unreasonable to expect that an armed man should obey one who is unarmed, or that an unarmed man should remain safe and secure when his servants are armed. In the latter case, there will be suspicion on the one hand and contempt on the other, making cooperation impossible. Niccolo Machiavelli in "The Prince."
