"I think civil wars begin with the smallest of social estrangements and work their way to Gotterdammerung along an escalating path strewn with unthinking banal discourtesies, deliberate slights, virulent name calling and finally assaults -- first on the truth, then on the law and, at last, on each other."
"I say this because David Neiwert died violently last night, and when told, I didn't give a hoot in hell. I actually grimly smiled and muttered, 'Serves the lying collectivist bastard right.'"
Then I woke up." ... |

"Salt Lake City's Deseret News, as part of its continuing campaign against rationality, recently published a house editorial condemning civilian ownership of firearms."
"... '[T]ough guys don't pack firearms. Fearful guys do -- people who see everyone around them as a threat and think the worst of faces they don't recognize. Guns don't showcase strength, they showcase weakness.'"
"There is the beginning of an important point here ... If they are serious in their assessment that carrying firearms (particularly handguns) is symptomatic of socially dangerous insecurity on the part of those who carry them, then disarmament should begin with those most frequently found in public possession of those weapons -- that is, the police." ... |

"Alan Gura [Partner, Gura & Possessky, PLLC]: 'Gun rights opponents at last have cause to rejoice. Only 58 members of a lop-sided Democratic-controlled Senate approved of a provision mandating that states give full faith and credit to each other's gun-carry permits. The laws of forty-eight states, at least in theory, allow their peaceable citizenry to carry guns in public for self-defense. Forty of these states either require no license to do so, or issue such licenses as a matter of routine upon meeting basic qualifications. Even in the small minority of hold-out states, gun carry licenses are often available depending on one's residence. ...'" ... |

"I was involved in the 2007 Heller case in which the Supreme Court invalidated Washington, D.C.'s gun bans as contrary to the Second Amendment right to arms. I was recently invited by UCLA's law school asked me to address the subject recently. Here's what I told them:"
"'The historical evidence is clear: The Second Amendment was uniformly seen as an individual right by 18th and 19th century Americans. The idea that it was something else is a fiction of the 20th century, invented because even gun-ban advocates realized that the amendment has to mean something.'" ... |

"As the fight to restore the right to bear arms for self-defense was waged in various states, one of the toughest opponents to attempts to reform the law was the establishment media. With rare exception, newspaper editorial boards repeatedly took the side of legislators and gun ban extremists who prefer to view citizens more as subjects." ...
"One of the more common items inserted as a poison pill in many states under pressure from the establishment media was a public records provision. 'We have to make sure,' the editorial boards claimed, 'that the 'right' people are getting licenses.' But in the months and years after concealed carry laws took effect, it quickly became clear the media had far less noble intentions." ... |

"Apparently, the flighty Republican did not care that Judge Sotomayor has demonstrated an extreme anti-gun bias in her private and public life. Not only that, she has expressed racist views in multiple speeches over the years, and she has proven -- in her actions and words -- that she is committed to IGNORING THE CONSTITUTION!"

"Of all the issues brought up during the confirmation hearings of Sonia Sotomayer, one comment she made is most disturbing. It also has largely been ignored by the establishment media. During an exchange with Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla, Sotomayer stated there is no constitutional right to self-defense."

FULL TEXT BELOW:
This is an interesting story in the San Diego Weekly Reader. Rosa Jurjevics, along with some others, decides to (legally) open carry in California to see what kind of response she gets from strangers. Of course, it doesnt take long before someone dials 911 and the cops show up. NOTE: Please dont write me about the impractical aspect of open carry. While I completely dislike the thought of unloaded, open carry, and I think it turns you into a sitting duck, the practical side of self-defense was not the point of my post. The alarmist reaction from Californians was my point. |
