"Oklahoma City Federal Building bomber Timothy McVeigh was linked to a militia. The siege and eventual destruction of David Koresh and the Branch Davidian complex in Waco, Texas, was tied to militia activity."
"Repeating the Morris Dees fundraising mantra, are we?"

"Mike Vanderboegh wrote them a letter asking for a retraction, saying in part:"
"McVeigh was not 'linked to a militia.' He was NEVER a member of any constitutional militia. The only militia meeting that I'm aware of that he and Nichols attended, they were asked to leave..."

"Is it legal, under the U.S. Constitution, for the city of North Little Rock to establish its own official religion?"

"Of course not."

"But an item on National Public Radio this afternoon raised ... any number of theoretical scenarios ..."

"And it all starts with gun control."

"... the [NRA] is filing lawsuits against other cities that have stringent gun-control laws, arguing that they should be revoked, as well."

"... Mayor Richard M. Daley apparently believes the Supreme Court's decision means the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms only prevents the federal government from imposing limits on gun ownership. Chicago as a city, on the other hand, could pass and enforce gun control laws with impunity." ...

"I believe that the Supreme Court made the right judgment in the case over the right to bear arms."

"The problem is that conservative Republicans have been saying for three decades that judges should not make laws, rather they should interpret the Constitution literally."

"With the Supreme Court's decision on the right to bear arms, the justices have rewritten the Constitution." ...

"This amendment says nothing about self-defense, which was the Supreme Court's rationale for overturning the hand gun ban in Washington, DC." ...

"The recent Supreme Court decision legalizing gun ownership in all Washington, D.C., homes was greeted with joy by all advocates of National Rifle Association policies, and of course, by all gun sellers."

"The decision has strengthened similar lawsuits in all individual states that still hold possession illegal. If there is no change, then the nation is heading toward universal gun ownership, surely unique on the world scene."

"But consider: Firearms are the leading cause of death in teenagers. Planned suicides have a high failure rate, except for death by firearms. The easy availability of guns may make all the difference." ...

"Have we all gone mad? A young boy takes a gun, shoots at other boys, and a young girl dies on her doorstep. A disgruntled employee, mad at his supervisor, takes a gun and kills him, fellow employees and himself."

"Now our Supreme Court rules that the Second Amendment guaranteed the right of individuals to own handguns. I know this is a simplification of the one-person majority decision, but it, in effect, overturns prior judicial decisions, going back to the early 1800s, that the Second Amendment addresses a collective right and not an individual right." ...

"Lock and load. Here we go again."

"Dick Heller, the D.C. security guard who successfully challenged the District's near-total ban on handgun ownership in a case that reached the Supreme Court, filed suit Monday seeking to strike-down the city's re-tailored gun law."

"This was no surprise. In fact, District officials such as Mayor Adrian Fenty practically dared Heller, along with his lawyers, to do it. Fenty and the city council decided to let the Supreme Court's landmark decision in District of Columbia v. Heller restrict them as loosely as possible in redrawing the law." ...

"As Dave Weigel noted yesterday, Dick Heller has filed a complaint in federal court that accuses the District of Columbia of failing to comply with the Supreme Court decision overturning D.C.'s handgun ban and firearm storage requirements. The complaint (PDF) focuses on two aspects of D.C.'s revised gun law that I discussed in my column last week: the ban on semiautomatic handguns and the requirement that any firearm in the home be kept unloaded and locked except 'while it is being used to protect against a reasonably perceived threat of immediate harm to a person.'" ...

"... the couple heard a disturbance as a man tried to break through the front door and also tried to enter through a back door and a rear window of the residence."

"X marks the spot for Kevin Nevius of Gibsonburg, who has fired his way to his first national smallbore rifle prone championship in the 2008 National Rifle and Pistol Matches at Camp Perry."

"Nevius, who has been winning matches and sub-championships in the prone, or flat-on-your-stomach position, since at least 1997, last week took the top smallbore or .22 prize with a winning score of 6387-475X out of a possible 6400. A total of 291 shooters competed in smallbore prone."

"He edged out Tarl Kempley of Carson City, Nev., who fired 6387-468X in the grueling 640-shot series of matches. Nevius captured first by accumulating a higher number of tie-breaking center-shot X tallies during the series." ...

NJ: Silence over Henry factory

"The Jersey Journal reported on July 21 that the Henry Repeating Arms Company is going to open a factory to produce its line of firearms in Bayonne. I heartily applaud this announcement. Henry is a most respected arms manufacturer as well as a part of American history. The first Henry rifle was presented by 'Henry' to President Abraham Lincoln."

"But what I don't understand is the silence of Hudson County's substantial gun-hating community. Where is Assemblywoman Joan Quigley, and especially where is former Bayonne big shot Joe Doria, or current 'savior of the unarmed' Mayor Healy to decry the fact that the Henry Rifle is one of the most famous 'weapons of war' in the history of firearms evolution?" ...

"Only 25 people have taken advantage of Chicago's four-month gun registration amnesty, including former Attorney General Roland Burris."

"Ald. Richard Mell (33rd) proposed the idea -- in shorter form -- after he forgot to re-register his arsenal of weapons, as required every year by an ordinance he helped to pass."

"Mell argued that reopening gun registration wasn't just a personal favor. He insisted that there were hundreds, if not thousands, of otherwise law-abiding Chicago gun owners just like him who had inadvertently allowed their gun registration to lapse."

"'Either the public is unaware or they just haven't had an opportunity to come in and register,' said Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Monique Bond." ...

"Letter writer John Skoufis has obviously read more than I on the specifics of the drafting of the U.S. Constitution."

"... I must disagree with both Coxe and Skoufis, who are concerned about the militia injuring their fellow citizens."

"The Second Amendment begins as I noted in my last letter, 'A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State ...'"

"This puts a requirement on the militia -- it must be well regulated -- and its purpose is maintaining the security of a free state. Again as noted in my last letter, the formation and responsibilities of a militia are described in Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution. If the average citizen must fear a militia, why form a militia in the first place?" ...

"Both gun advocates and business groups claimed victory in a legal battle over guns and property rights following the ruling on Monday on a challenge to Florida's so-called 'take-your-guns-to-work' law ..."

"In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle upheld a provision of the controversial law that allows employees holding a state-issued concealed weapons permit to keep a gun locked in their vehicle in the parking lot."

"Hinkle also said employers cannot fire or refused to hire an employee with a lawful gun permit." ...

"What began a few years ago as an online forum for gun-rights advocates has exploded into the leading group for expanding Georgia's gun laws."

"Since its incorporation in 2006, Georgia Carry has fired off a steady stream of lawsuits against local gun bans by leaning on a state law that bars any entity but the General Assembly from regulating the carrying and possession of firearms."

"Georgia Carry appears to be winning the fight against Georgia's restrictions, which it calls the most stringent in the country, according to John Monroe, the group's vice president and attorney."

"Restrictions on where permitted gun owners can carry weapons in public seem to be on the wane ..." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Today the taxing power, rather than chattel slavery, is the instrument by which the parasitical element of the population subsists. And that element, which includes politicians, panics at the slightest reduction in the state's power to plunder. Once you start liberating taxpayers, even a little tiny bit, nobody knows where it may end. Joseph Sobran
