"Man throws brick through City Hall, police HQ windows"

"Austin, Texas police say a man tossed a rock through the window of police headquarters after he hit Austin City Hall with a big rock minutes earlier."

"The suspect is described as white, in his 30s and with a beard. Police say first a security guard on duty saw the man smash the glass and sprint down Cesar Chavez."

"Then 14 minutes later police say the scruffy suspect was captured committing a crime on camera outside police headquarters. On video the suspect is seen shattering the glass and taking off."

"After months of being blamed for Mexico's surge in drug related violence, the United States is now being blamed for the illegal gun trade in Canada as well."

"Many anti-gun idealists are still trying to perpetuate the myth that guns are bought legally in the U.S. and are then sold to Mexican gangs despite the fact that their ... claim has been thoroughly debunked."

"Sensing a chance to snowball the issue, a 'study' conducted in Canada claims 'that the best available data suggests that about two-thirds of crime guns seized in Canada have their origin south of the border.' Spearheading the study was Wendy Cukier ... a prominent gun control activist, who feels the blame should be extended for all violent crime on the planet." ...

"As for myself, I like to write my content for non-gun owners. As you might know, I have urged non-gun owner readers to contact a liberty purist friend and ask them to take you shooting. You can learn a lot by contact not with a gun culture, but with a liberty culture, and right about now, that is very, very important. Now Im going to ask you to perform another assignment." ...

"It is a clever idea for a column, and it took me a little while to think through why I think Dionne's logic is unsound. But unsound I think it is. "Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison won't be a senator much longer. The Republican will soon be returning to her home state of Texas to launch a run for governor -- and she'll be quitting her Senate seat to do so. In an interview with Texas radio station WBAP, Hutchison promised to make her official campaign launch announcement in August. The senator also nixed any possibility that she would hold on to her seat while running for governor, saying that she would leave sometime in October or November." ...

Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) released the following statement after meeting with President Obamas pick for Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Judge Sonia Sotomayor :

Judge Sotomayor has an extensive judicial career with more than 17 years on the federal bench. Her background is impressive.

It is imperative that we have a justice who will apply the law, not write the law. I still have concerns regarding her views involving the Second Amendment and issues similar to those raised in the New Haven firefighters case.

"Pushing toward a historic Supreme Court confirmation vote, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor yesterday over nearly solid Republican opposition."

"The 13-6 vote masked deep divisions within GOP ranks about confirming President Obama's first high court nominee. Just one Republican, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, joined Democrats to support her."

"Noting Judge Sonia Sotomayor's record on the Second Amendment, Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK) told Roll Call that that he is 'undecided' on her nomination to the Supreme Court (although he added that he is 'leaning toward voting in favor'). Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) expressed similar uncertainty:" ...

"Both senators' equivocal statements come in the wake of the NRAs decision to 'score' the Sotomayor vote in determining where each lawmaker stands on the NRA's pro-gun agenda. The NRA claims, falsely, that because Sotomayor once upheld a New York law against a Second Amendment challenge this somehow proves that she is hostile to gun rights. That decision, however, did nothing more than apply well-established law." ...

"Kelley Vlahos has a great piece today on the Henry Gates affair and the larger problems of which it's a symptom. One such problem is the ever increasing number of pretexts on which the authorities can interrogate, search, assault, and arrest citizens. FULL TEXT BELOW:

Kudos to Alfred J. Dunning for his well reasoned letter to the editor (Bill discriminates against gun owners, July 20).

I would like to strengthen his reasoning by correcting his only mistake.

He states that the Second Amendment grants a right of the people to bear arms.

The Second Amendment does not grant that right, but rather acknowledges an already existing right of the people to keep and bear arms, and states that that right shall not be infringed.

Remember, our Constitution enumerates powers granted to our government by we the people, not vice versa.

Dick Young

Yuba City

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
No kingdom can be secured otherwise than by arming the people. The possession of arms is the distinction between a freeman and a slave. He, who has nothing, and who himself belongs to another, must be defended by him, whose property he is, and needs no arms. But he, who thinks he is his own master, and has what he can call his own, ought to have arms to defend himself, and what he possesses; else he lives precariously, and at discretion. James Burgh, Political Disquisitions: Or, an Enquiry into Public Errors, Defects, and Abuses [London, 1774-1775].
