A home invasion in Ypsilanti Township early Saturday escalated into a gunfight that left four people shot, including both residents and two intruders.

Shortly after the shooting, Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man and a male teenager with gunshot wounds who had been taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Deputies also arrested a man and a woman who allegedly dropped them off.

Egeler said deputies were called to a home in the 2000 block of Ide Street at 1:50 a.m. He said the gunfight erupted after several subjects broke into the house and tried to rob the residents at gunpoint.

The Daily Telegram asked the six candidates running for the 7th Congressional District seat in Washington, D.C., to describe their positions on a variety of issues.

Gun control: Candidates were asked to describe their positions on gun rights.

SCHWARZ: Says that “my position is a very strong position in support of the Second Amendment.” Has come under fire from his opponent for telling the Detroit Free Press in 2002 that he believed the Second Amendment was meant to preserve the rights of states to maintain armed militias, rather than individual rights to bear arms. Has been endorsed by the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund.

Utah has become the nation's bargain basement for permits to carry concealed guns. But it's no bargain for Utah taxpayers. As The Tribune reported last Sunday, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of permits issued to out-of-state residents. About 58 percent of the 16,000 projected applicants in 2006 do not live in Utah. There are two problems with this.

A Fayette judge struggled to make sense of Kentucky's new "home intruder" law yesterday, calling the National Rifle Association-backed legislation confusing, vague and poorly written.

"I'm not quite sure that the drafters had even a marginal knowledge of criminal law or Kentucky law," Circuit Judge Sheila Isaac said. "It is absolutely silent on the court's role."

In an interview yesterday, University of Kentucky law professor Robert Lawson, widely considered the state's foremost expert on criminal law, sharply criticized the law. "It is the worst legislation I have ever seen in 40 years."

The Detroit Police Department will launch a citywide gun buyback campaign next week.

Bully-Cummings said the buyback is part of the city's multilayered approach to getting guns off the streets and reducing crime.

She said some people consider gun buyback programs ineffective, but added, "Every gun that we can get off the streets is one less gun that we have to worry about and one less gun you have to worry about."

"Our prayers go out to the victims of gun violence in Seattle and their families. To the family of the victim who died, we express our deepest condolences. To the victims who are struggling to recover, we offer our hopes for a full recovery. This terrible attack appears to have been launched by a deeply troubled person who had shown signs of mental illness, and had run afoul of the law as a result of that mental illness. We, as a society, need to do more to restrict access to firearms to individuals who are exhibiting public recklessness and espousing hatred to people around them."

MI: Self-Defense Act promotes violence

Quick — think fast. What do you do when your life is in danger? If someone else is threatening your life, do you have the right to end theirs? You do now. On July 20, the Self-Defense Act was signed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

The package of bills protects the rights of people using deadly force against an aggressor. In other words, if you kill someone in the act of self defense, you are legally protected.

For law-abiding citizens, this may seem like a sound piece of legislation. In actuality, however, the act has the potential to promote violence.

A former Petersburg police officer made steroids and sold them to other officers on the force, including one convicted of beating a man unconscious, according to a federal complaint.

Calvin Felder, 35, of Richmond is charged with making and selling anabolic steroids to fellow Petersburg officers from late 2001 through 2003. He did not return several calls for comment yesterday.

Ken Melson, first assistant U.S. attorney for eastern Virginia, said he's disappointed in the Petersburg officers, who should serve as role models. "Such use is not only against the law, it can cause significant harm to the public," he said.

Police Chief Col. Lee Crowell said, "If they are committing crimes, we don't want them as police officers."

LAS VEGAS – When Sgt. Henry Prendes was slain Feb. 1, it dealt a powerful shock to the unusually young Las Vegas police force. After wounding Sgt. Prendes with an assault-style rifle, the gunman stood over the officer and fired point-blank into his head.

And in the wake of Sgt. Prendes' killing, Las Vegas police have shown a greater inclination to shoot at people.
This year, they have fired at suspects in 19 incidents, killing nine people.

The rash of shootings has triggered an FBI investigation into one case, prompted a local review of the inquest system that has repeatedly cleared officers of wrongdoing and caused outcry from civil-rights organizations.

My kid brother, Dariek, gave me the only handgun I've ever owned: a target gray, stainless steel .357 Magnum. This gun was the not-so-little cousin to the .44 that co-starred in 'Sudden Impact,' when Clint Eastwood, as "Dirty Harry," told a bad guy: 'Go ahead, make my day."

The weapon came into my possession right after Dariek had a bad night. Voices from his stereo speakers had kept him awake, talking to him, telling him to blow his girlfriend's brains out. He had fought valiantly to ignore the voices but feared the next time he heard them he might not be as strong.

'Are you taking your medicine?' I asked.

'No,' he grunted. 'I stopped taking it. That stuff is poison.'

A Muslim man angry with Israel barged into the offices of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle Friday afternoon and opened fire with a handgun, killing one woman and wounding five others before surrendering to police.

A law-enforcement source identified the arrested suspect as Naveed Afzal Haq, 30, who until recently had lived in Everett, and said Haq apparently has a history of mental illness. Court records show Haq has a charge of lewd conduct pending against him in Benton County.

The law-enforcement source said Haq had a license to carry a concealed weapon.

Jul 30, 2006 — Tom Stees said he had a chance meeting with District Attorney Stan Rebert one Saturday in 2001. Stees and his father were leaving Central York Market in York, and Rebert was about to walk in.

"Why do I have one of your guns on my desk?" Rebert asked, according to Stees.

Agra: Faced with increasing threats from kidnappers, doctors in Agra will undergo training of a different kind learning the use of firearms for self-defence.

The doctors will spend more time at the shooting range than in their clinics when a programme drawn up by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) is implemented early next month.

After a spate of abductions by criminal gangs, the doctors have been holding emergency sessions for the past week and meeting politicians and district authorities to work out a foolproof security arrangement.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
...but if circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude, that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people, while there is a large body of citizens, little if at all inferior to them in discipline and use of arms, who stand ready to defend their rights... Alexander Hamilton speaking of standing armies in Federalist No. 29.
