"Concerned police and civic chiefs say youths across Hartlepool are leaving a trail of damage by wrongly treating the unlicensed weapons as toys."
"They are now mounting a major crackdown on the weapons following an alarming number of frightening attacks in the town. Locations where the gun-toting yobs have been spotted in the town include Seaton Carew beach, the Summerhill outdoor recreation centre and the Hart to Haswell walkway."
"Officers are appealing to eagle-eyed members of the public to help them ensure the potentially lethal rifles don't get in the wrong hands." |

"An Anne Arundel County grand jury decided yesterday not to indict an FBI agent who mistook an unarmed Pasadena man for a suspected bank robber and shot him in the face."
"The grand jury deliberated 20 minutes before declining to indict Special Agent Christopher Braga on charges of first-degree assault, second-degree assault or reckless endangerment in the shooting, county prosecutors said."
"Braga shot Joseph C. Schultz, 20, in the face with an M-4 rifle March 1. Schultz was riding in a car driven by his girlfriend when FBI agents, searching for a suspect believed to be armed, pulled the car over on Fort Smallwood Road."
Question of the Day: What would happen if the victim had shot an FBI agent in the face "by accident"? |

"Miale-Gix became irate, began cursing, and then grabbed her bags from the screener, state police said. She continued to curse and use obscenities as she left the screening area, state police said."

"Ever since Robert Mugabe's thugs began invading farms in 2000 there have been discussions among people in as to whether violence should be used against the Mugabe thugs."
"Let me begin by tracing the history of discussions here in Africa regarding the use of force against farm invasions. In the first few months of the invasions, the black farm workers began to realize that they would lose their jobs if the farms were taken over. So then they began fighting back. There were a handful of instances where black farm workers ganged together and fought off Mugabe's farm invaders. It was magnificent seeing the whites and blacks getting together, making a plan and then winning. But Mugabe did not put up with that. He immediately sent in army officers, dressed in civilian clothes and armed with AK-47's. From then onwards all resistance stopped." |

"Red folders may seem harmless enough, but what they signify for some convicted criminals is the difference between a few years in state prison and more than a dozen in a federal lock-up."
"Local, state and federal law enforcement officers assign red folders to people identified by the Violent Crime Task Force as violent offenders at high risk for offending again."
"The folders work like this: When a person identified by the task force is released from prison and put on probation, his criminal record is placed in a red file folder. The folder goes to the magistrates office where, if the person is arrested again, the magistrate will have his criminal record in hand and will likely assign a high bond." |

"For two years, James Freire had been toying with applying for a Connecticut gun permit. Although the 22-year-old lifelong Stamford resident had filled out most of the required paperwork, he kept putting off sending in his application."
"It wasn't such an urgent thing for me," said Freire, a certification engineer at Inrange Technologies in Shelton.
"But Freire changed his mind after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the renewed violence in the Middle East. Putting off applying for his permit, he felt, was no longer an option." |

"A robber threatened to blow away a college kid in University Heights. A gun was shoved in a grandfather's face while he sat in his car in Clifton. A waitress and her boyfriend had a gun pointed at them in Corryville."
"More than 100 times from January through April this year, armed robbers poked guns at people on streets or in parking lots in the city, demanding they empty their pockets."
"University of Cincinnati student John Warner was held up at gunpoint in University Heights last month." "Robberies at gunpoint in Cincinnati during the first four months of this year were nearly double what they were during the same time in 2001 and 2000."
KABA NOTE: This entire article appears to basically urge people to give thugs whatever they want. Local citizens' right to self-defense is greatly impaired by the state and local laws, virtually assuring easy pickens for people who deserve a bullet more than a wallet. |

NOTE: This "report" is from an anti-gun group. Generally speaking, when they adamantly oppose a bill, it's a good bill. This one seems to meet that rule...
"This bill would create new committees, new paperwork, and cost the taxpayer's money by forcing the Massachusetts Attorney General's office to send all proposed consumer regulations to a special legislative committee for review, with no time limits. Therefore, any Massachusetts's AG wanting to extend consumer safety laws to guns (or anything else for that matter) would run the risk of having all their powers significantly limited and subject to constant review by legislators, tying up proposed consumer safety laws for years or indefinitely."
"This bill is designed to scare away other states that would like to follow the lead of MA in extending consumer safety laws to cover firearms." |

"Americans for Gun Safety Foundation (AGSF) today applauded Wal-Mart for adopting the group's suggestion to institute a "don't know, don't sell" policy on guns."
"In a letter last April to the CEOs of Wal-Mart, K-Mart and three other national firearms retailers, AGSF asked the companies to adopt a voluntary policy by which they would refuse to transfer firearms to prospective buyers until a criminal background check of the buyer is completed, even if the check takes longer than 3 days. The letter referenced a recent report by AGSF showing that over a 30-month period, 10,000 felons and others prohibited from owning a gun were able to obtain a firearm because the background check could not be completed within the three business days allotted by federal law." |

The U.S. Attorney's Office vowed to battle rising gun violence in Boston yesterday by probing sources of illegal guns and huddling with local law enforcement to hit career criminals with tough federal sentences.
``You can't tolerate this spike in violence,' U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan said. ``If we slow down the supply side of guns, we'll be able to slow down the violence as well.'

"The California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA) today released to California radio stations public service announcements calling for safe and responsible celebrating this Fourth of July holiday. The PSAs, the sixth in a series of CRPA PSAs on gun safety, can be obtained from CRPA's spokesperson. Similar CRPA PSAs have been broadcast by many radio stations for the July 4th and New Years Eve holidays for the last several years, and many stations intend to broadcast them again this year."
"In the past, the Fourth of July and New Years Eve have unfortunately been marked by some irresponsible people celebrating by shooting guns into the air. CRPA opposes any and all irresponsible gun usage, particularly this bad practice, which can have tragic results when the bullet comes back down to earth. Discharging guns in such a manner is already a crime." |

"When Congress returns next week from its Independence Day recess, we anticipate H.R. 4635 will be one of the first bills brought to the House floor for consideration. This legislation would mandate the establishment of a test program to allow as many as 1,400 properly trained commercial airline pilots to have access to firearms as a last line of defense against terrorist hijackers."
"The test program has bipartisan support, and would give preference to pilots with prior military or law enforcement experience. While the NRA would like to see this option extended to all properly trained flight deck crew, this legislation represents a good first step in the right direction." |

"Americans possess a greater national unity..."
"Americans have been steadfast in their efforts to build a country of liberty..."
"...we reaffirm our determination to preserve our Forefathers' legacy of freedom."
Then there are his actions:
1) He'd rather shoot commercial airplanes down with F-16's than let pilots defend the cockpit.
2) He signed the "Patriot" Act without reading it, after it was handed to him by a bunch of criminals who didn't read it either -- stripping away a host of rights protections the same Thomas Jefferson of whom he speaks fought to protect.
3) His "Justice" Department intervened to assure that the Supreme Court would not hear two valid, needed Second Amendment cases -- each of which should have been heard and rightly decided in favor of the liberty to which he frequently pays lip service.

"Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the nation's biggest seller of guns, has quietly ordered its stores to adopt a policy on sales that's tougher than federal law requires and is drawing criticism from gun-rights groups."
"Wal-Mart executives, in an internal memo obtained by the Los Angeles Times, told store managers five weeks ago to stop selling firearms if authorities were not able to determine whether the would-be buyers should be banned from owning a weapon."
"Under federal law, if authorities cannot complete a criminal background check on a gun buyer within three business days, retailers are allowed to hand over the weapon even though the buyer's status is unclear."
The company "decided to take the extra step toward keeping guns out of the hands of individuals who possibly ought not to have them," according to the memo. |
