MI: Michigan state park officers fear for safety, want to carry guns

Michigan state park officers should be equipped with guns and bulletproof vests to handle unruly visitors to Michigan state parks, according to their union.

Currently, the state's 320 state park officers face an unsafe work environment created by inadequate training and equipment, says the Michigan State Employees Association.

The union has filed a complaint with the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration. MIOSHA confirmed it has opened an investigation.

MSEA President Ken Moore says the workers need more training, sidearms and better access to law-enforcement data systems so the officers can do instant background checks on park visitors.

Another Year of Campus Carry..Yawn

Well, that was dull. We had another year of campus carry, and no one noticed. We were told that drunk and drugged-up students who had a carry permit would kill each other over parking places. Critics said that faculty would be shot down for teaching unpopular courses. It never happened.

It turns out that your shockingly responsible gun owner remains extraordinarily level-headed even when he comes on campus. It wasnt blood spilled on campus, but ink spilled by newspapers predicting a holocaust. The only thing murdered was the truth as the news media deliberately ignored that mass-murderers choose gun-free zones.

States in the Mountain West have some of the most permissive gun laws in the country. But many of these states struggle with the same problem: suicide. Utah has one of Americas lowest homicide rates and one of the highest suicide rates.

Nearly 90 percent of all gun deaths here are suicides and half of suicides involve a gun. How do Western states square an affinity for guns with a rising suicide rate? And what can be done to save more lives?

Gun rights are under attack in the United States, but assaults on gun rights aren't just an American problem. Where the Americans Constitution affords Americans the protection of the Second Amendment, other people from countries do not have this luxury.

In 2000 the South African government passed a law called a firearm Control Act of 2000. Two sections of this law were of grave concern to the gun owners of South Africa. Up until this time a gun owners license was valid for life under the Arms and Ammunition Act of 1969. Under the new law, the licensed gun owners had to renew their license every five years.

Finally, The First Purge offers one of the best arguments for the right to gun ownership and self-defense, as the only way Dmtri, Nya and Isaiah are able to fight the body-armored, automatic rifle toting mercenaries are with guns and knives of their own. Even the most ardent gun hater cant deny that a corrupt government using deadly force on its citizens should have been met with the same force.

On the same day that Thomas joined Gorsuch in calling for closer scrutiny of eminent domain, Gorsuch joined Thomas in dissenting from the Courts refusal to hear a case challenging Californias requirement that people who want to carry guns for self-defense persuade local police officials that they have good cause to do so. Such discretionary carry permit policies favor the rich, famous, and well-connected while preventing ordinary people from exercising the right to bear arms.

Lets put it this way: If Kavanaugh is some sort of deep-cover David Souter, hes done a remarkably good job of hiding it, building a mountain of stellar originalist jurisprudence.

Ed Whelan has been doing yeomans work over on National Reviews Bench Memos blog, righteously defending Kavanaughs record on religious liberty, the Second Amendment, free speech, immigration, and the administrative state. And Ed isnt alone. Pieces from former Kavanaugh law clerks at The Federalist and at NRO have ably defended him from attacks and highlighted the best parts of his jurisprudence.

Q: What will it take to get the Supreme Court to hear a Second Amendment case?

A: It would take Congress, or a state or local legislature, deciding to enact a gun regulation that places significant obstacles in the way of possessing traditional self-defense weapons at home or perhaps in some public places or a desire, by a majority the court, significantly to broaden the right recognized in Heller.

A "gun sanctuary" trend spreading across Illinois counties in support of Second Amendment rights has raised questions about just who is allowed to decide what is or isn't constitutional where guns are concerned.

At least 26 of Illinois' 102 counties have passed "gun sanctuary" resolutions or similar measures. The term is a play on the phrase "sanctuary city," which describes cities where political and law enforcement leaders limit their cooperation with federal immigration policies and vow to protect immigrant rights.

The replacement for our beloved Justice Scalia will be a person of similar views and judicial philosophies. Very important. This will be one of the most important issues decided by this election. My opponent wants to essentially abolish the 2nd amendment. I, on the other hand, received the early and strong endorsement of the National Rifle Association and will protect the right of all Americans to keep their families safe.

Many of the students lobbied legislators in Tallahassee, which prompted tighter gun restrictions in the state.

Those gun restrictions have angered some.

Ross Spano, a Republican candidate for the District 15 U.S. House seat, will hold an opposing Rally for our Rights event Friday in support of Second Amendment rights.

As much as I encourage engagement by young voters, I believe it is absolutely essential for us to understand what is happening: this is a targeted attack on our right to keep and bear arms as promised by our nations constitution, Spano said in a statement.

A large group of gun rights advocates assembled in the blistering heat Saturday afternoon outside Carmels Historic Courthouse to push back against efforts to create stricter gun control laws that they believe would hinder their constitutional right to bear arms.

With the demonstration attracting roughly 70 people carrying signs reading Firearms protect children, and Making good people helpless doesnt make bad people harmless, residents stressed the essential need to remain protected and armed from those who could pose a threat.

"It's definitely not a gun safety measure," said Alan Gottlieb of the Second Amendment Foundation. "It's definitely flat-out gun control."

He said they'll continue the court fight that the initiative itself is illegal because it's too vague and poorly written.

The state Supreme Court has turned back their case once, but Gottlieb said they'll file more challenges soon.

The accessories we attach to our guns are as personal as the firearm we decide to carry. Talking with a co-worker, I expressed a curiosity in getting a laser for my gun. Digging in his cabinets, he gifted me with a LaserMax Centerfire Light and Laser that would fit my own firearm.

Using a laser occasionally creates heated discussion among firearm owners; some prefer them as a tool to help ensure better aim during a self-defense situation; others decry them as something that encourages people to rely on technology instead of skill to save themselves during an altercation. Whatever your choice, the Centerfire Light and Laser is a good system once assembled, though I encountered a few minor flaws in my installation.

Jacksonville attorney Wyman Duggan, the best funded of the three Republicans looking to succeed Rep. Jay Fant in HD 15, snagged the endorsement of the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund and the United Sportsmen of Florida Thursday.

Duggan, deemed pro-gun by the USF and given an A rating by the NRA-PVF, was lauded by USF executive director Marion Hammer for his strong support of Second Amendment, self-defense, and anti-crime issues.

A "Stand Your Ground" proposal also failed to clear the Legislature. The measure would shift the burden onto prosecutors to prove that shooters claiming self-defense didn't act to defend themselves.

Gov. John Kasich, a Republican, had said he would veto the bill, which could have looked bad for fellow Republicans as they visited fairs and campaign stops this summer.

Why Did The CDC Bury Data On Self-Defense Gun Usage?

Klecks discovery yields two findings before he analyzes a single piece of data. First, the claim that the CDC is not allowed to research firearms is invalid. The CDC knowingly asked questions about one of the hottest topics around in the years immediately after the Dickey Amendment. The CDC is not a one-person operation; the addition of these questions had to have been approved by the research team. Since these questions were first asked in 1996, the CDC has been silent while gun control proponents argue that the Dickey Amendment restricts research. What it restricts is advocacy.

A woman shot a man who she says took her car at a southern Dallas gas station Wednesday night.

Michelle Booker-Hicks told FOX 4 it happened around 10 p.m. as she was paying for her gas at a Shell station along Interstate 35 near Camp Wisdom Road.

Booker-Hicks saw a man get into the car with her 2 and 4-year-old sons in the back seat. She jumped back in too, grabbed a gun from her glove box and shot the man in the face to get him to stop.

The Second Amendment has become optional

Three other current justices joined the majority in Heller. Since it takes four votes for the Court to accept a case, at least two of them seem reluctant to say anything further about the Second Amendment. Judging from Samuel Alitos concurring opinion in the stun gun case, which faulted his colleagues for a grudging decision that stopped short of overturning the ban, the two holdouts are probably John Roberts and Anthony Kennedy.

You have to imagine that at some point in the future of our country the Supreme Court will take another Second Amendment case, Gura said on Gun Talk. But until that happens, Heller has become optional.

The mass shooting on June 28 in Annapolis, Maryland, has renewed familiar concerns about America's gun culture and gun policies.

Yet this was not the only June shooting to make national headlines.

Fox News and The Washington Post reported an earlier story involving the quick-thinking actions of a church leader who also happened to be a trained emergency responder.

Spotting an armed carjacker exiting a Walmart Supercenter, in Oakville, Washington, the gun-owning pastor took pursuit then shot and killed the man in the parking lot.

Compared to the Annapolis shooting, the Walmart incident offers a far more convenient narrative for gun-rights activists.

U.S. Rep. Scalise recently cited the Second Amendment as how it saved his life because two police officers dealt with the shooter. I wonder if Rep. Scalise has even read that amendment.

The amendment necessitates "a well regulated Militia." While it does not explicitly include police officers, it clearly applies only to those who are trained in the use of firearms.
