The nations top womens biathlete was in Anchorage last week to meet with and help train aspiring Alaskans at the Kincaid Park Biathlon Range.
Deedra Irwin has the best performance of any American biathlete in the Winter Olympic Games, placing seventh in the Beijing 2022 womens individual race.
Biathlon is one of the most unique sports featured at the Winter Olympics and one that not many Americans have competed in at a high level internationally. It is a combination of Nordic skiing and riflery.
Irwin was close to earning the countrys first medal in 2022.
I was only one shot away from getting a medal, Irwin said. It was really cool and humbling to have that kind of experience happen on such a big stage. |

They themselves contribute nothing. They are, in fact, the mirror image of men like Jose Alba. Jose Alba came to the United States 30 years ago to work, and working is exactly what he was doing at the bodega in Harlem and almost midnight on Friday, selling chips to people who don't bother to work, holding up the retail economy for minimum wage. A healthy society celebrates, venerates men like Jose Alba, men with jobs and families, men with independence and dignity and above all, a healthy society affirms the right of men like this to self-defense. |

Yet, Chicagoans face the most liberty crushing gun regulations in the country. On May 27th Texas Gov. Greg Abbott referenced in the Chicago Tribune There are quote real gun laws in Chicago I hate to say this, but there are more people who were shot every weekend in Chicago than there are in schools in Texas, Abbott said Wednesday, also referencing Los Angeles and New York City. And we need to realize that people who think that, well, maybe if we could just implement tougher gun laws, its going to solve it, Chicago and L.A. and New York disprove that thesis. And so, if youre looking for a real solution, Chicago teaches that what youre talking about is not a real solution. |

The overwhelming majority of gun owners are in favor of universal background checks, of raising the minimum age to buy guns to 21 and so-called "red flag" laws to remove guns from potentially dangerous people, a new NPR/Ipsos survey finds.
But most of these gun owners also don't want to see an AR-15-style semiautomatic weapon ban, doubt new gun-control measures would do anything to stop mass shootings and Republican gun owners in particular think passing new gun control laws is a slippery slope toward taking all guns away. |

There were over 1 million opportunities for someone to buy a gun from a licensed dealer without a completed background check in 2020 and 2021, according to an FBI report released last month.
In all, 1,002,274 background checks or 4.2 percent took longer than three business days in 2020 and 2021, a higher share than any other period since at least 2014, according to data compiled by NBC News. After the third business day, federal law allows dealers to sell weapons while the background check is still pending, which potentially puts weapons in the hands of people who cant legally own a gun because of mental illness or their criminal history. |

A group representing over a million New Jersey gun owners has sued New Jersey law enforcement officials in federal court to overturn the states ban on semiautomatic firearms and assault weapons.
The Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs Inc. filed the complaint Friday, a day after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered Maryland to reconsider a similar ban there in light of its ruling declaring a constitutional right to carry handguns in public.
Scott Bach, who heads the association, hopes the Maryland remand means New Jerseys 32-year-old ban will fall too like its justifiable need requirement did after the U.S. Supreme Court last month relied on the Second Amendment to overturn a concealed carry regulation in New York. |

There are many influencers in the self-defense or, dare I say, tactical community that espouse always carrying a full-size pistol. Those who claim to do so are either exceedingly fortunate (or unfortunate, depending on your perspective) so as to never need to interact with other human beings in a professional capacity or in any sort of social contact outside of the county fair. I, frankly, dont believe those who claim to always carry a full-size gun; either they dont always carry, or they dont go many places in public. |

Superior Mayor Clint Folsom declined to comment, citing the pending lawsuit.
The Superior Town Board voted unanimously in June to pass its gun ordinances in response to mass shootings across the country, including the deaths of 19 children and two adults at a Texas elementary school.
The new ordinances repeal the current article in the towns municipal code regarding possession and use of weapons, replacing it with updated regulations that address assault weapons, large capacity magazines, trigger activators, and the purchase and sale of firearms in Superior.
In the lawsuit, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners argues the Superior ordinances banning standard capacity magazines and semi-automatic rifles are unconstitutional. |

New York law enforcement officials are condemning sweeping new laws on gun ownership that were rushed through the state Legislature and signed into law in response to the U.S. Supreme Court striking down the states tough concealed carry gun permitting system.
The officials say the new legislation will be difficult to enforce and may be unconstitutional.
We do not support punitive licensing requirements that aim only to restrain and punish law-abiding citizens who wish to exercise their Second Amendment rights, the New York State Sheriffs Association said in a statement available on its website. |

Blue states are testing the limits of gun restrictions under a conservative Supreme Court.
Moments after the justices nullified concealed carry laws in New York, lawmakers and governors in states with similar rules rushed to fortify their restrictions in the face of the court decision. Their attempts to thread the legal needle previewed what will likely be a years-long effort to defend and extend firearm rules under the courts sweeping new Second Amendment test. |

A partner and two associates from Kirkland & Ellis have jumped to the new Washington, D.C.-area small law firm led by appellate veterans Paul Clement and Erin Murphy, who left Kirkland last month after it said it was ending its legal work on Second Amendment cases.
Bartow Farr, the former Kirkland partner and a longtime colleague of Clement and Murphy, and former associates Nicholas Gallagher and Darina Merriam, were named as part of the legal team on the new Clement & Murphy website.
The firm will focus on appellate and U.S. Supreme Court work.
A second Kirkland partner, Andrew Lawrence, is expected to join the firm next week, Clement told Reuters on Thursday. He declined to comment further on the new hires. |

To the extent that the example of Alabama and Texas should be followed, Maryland and New York could comply by allowing applicants for protective orders to request that they be permitted to carry concealed weapons while the order is in effect.
Certainly, citizens who want to carry firearms would prefer to carry them concealed from view. However, the historical tradition shows that states can regulate concealed weapons. In addition, the Supreme Court said that, while citizens must be allowed to carry weapons publicly, the manner of public carry was open to reasonable regulation.
Ed.: Joke's on him; many of us prefer open carry. |

...what I believe to be the real story linking these seemingly disparate cases together namely, a decisive shift in how the Supreme Court will address constitutionally-protected rights in the future.
Each of these three decisions is built upon the principle that policy judgments, the subjective balancing of interests and the slavish devotion to precedent have little-to-no place in constitutional interpretation.
The Supreme Court has now declared that an analysis of the Constitutions text as informed by history and tradition is how issues should be decided. Such an idea represents a sea change in constitutional law, unrivaled since the Court abandoned opposition to the New Deals expansion of federal power in the 1930s. |

Communities across the northern suburbs continue to mourn the victims of Mondays mass shooting in Highland Park. As neighbors remember those lost and offer their support to survivors, advocates for stricter gun laws are also organizing to call for changes.
Just under a month ago, the Highland Park chapter of March for our Lives organized an anti-gun violence rally at Sunset Woods Park the same location of a candlelight vigil Thursday following mass shootings in Uvalde, Buffalo, and Tulsa among others. Attendees then marched through Highland Park, including right through the site of this past weekends shooting.
Organizer Rachel Jacoby says about 400 people came out to show their support for tighter restrictions on firearms. |

...which was the scene of a mass shooting at a regional rail yard in May 2021 in which 10 people died, including the shooter. It enacted an insurance mandate in February.
Even before the city ordinance was passed, it came under attack from gun rights advocates; their lawsuit seeking to invalidate the ordinance is currently before U.S. Judge Beth Labson Freeman of San Jose. The ordinance requires all gun owners to carry liability insurance specifically covering losses or damages resulting from any accidental use of the Firearm, including but not limited to death, injury or property damage. The ordinance also imposes an annual fee expected to be about $25 on gun owners to fund a municipal program for gun harm reduction. |

New York City hotels will ban guns on their property after a deal between the Hotel Association of New York City and the New York Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, AFL-CIO (HTC), was reached.
The deal will make almost all hotel rooms in the city gun-free zones for law-abiding citizens unless the guest is an on-duty police officer. This agreement comes on the heels of the landmark Supreme Court case, New York State Pistol Rifle Association v. Bruen. After the Bruen decision affirmed the right of an individual to carry a firearm outside the home for self-defense, the Hotel Trades Council wrote a letter to state lawmakers, asking them to pass the anti-gun bill that would designate much of the state as a sensitive area. |

Since she was 17 years old, Chrystul Kizer has been awaiting trial on a homicide charge for the killing of her sex trafficker, Randall Volar III. The Wisconsin Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling allowing her to argue self-defense to justify the killing, according to NBC News. Before this moment, she was facing greater punishment than Volar before he died.
Reports say Kizer was drugged by Volar the night of the incident. They fought after she refused to have sex with him, leading him to pin her to the ground. Prosecutors allege Kizer shot and killed Volar and set his house on fire. She told The Washington Post she did indeed have a gun in her purse when she was at Volars home and that her actions were a result of self-defense. |

The resident, 93-year-old Joe Howard Teague, told deputies that he had several suspects at gunpoint. A witness said that several people fled the scene on foot just before deputies arrived.
Teague was taken to the sheriffs Moreno Valley station for questioning, but not arrested.

The Muskegon County Republican Executive Committee released a statement overnight Wednesday disavowing Rep. Peter Meijer, saying Meijer violated the Oath of Office to uphold the Constitution and violated the Second Amendment.
Rep. Meijer has faced backlash from the Republican party throughout his career. In their decision, the Muskegon GOP specifically mentioned Meijer's voting to impeach former President Donald Trump, saying he did so "without evidence."
The committee also said that Meijer "violated the Second Amendment" by supporting Congress recent "Red Flag" gun control measures.
