... "Hora bucuriei praecox. Thus, in the first Rumanian-Latin phrase that I've ever created, I combine the terms Hora (dance), bucuriei (joy) and praecox (premature) in the title of this essay, for many of us certainly seem to be engaging in a premature dance of joy. Here's why."

"'Last month's historic Supreme Court gun rights decision is a blockbuster development for the right of individual self-defense in religious as well as secular spheres of interest,' John M. Snyder, Founder-Chairman of the St. Gabriel Possenti Society, Inc. declared here today."

"'All of the Justices who voted in the 5-4 majority for individual gun rights are Catholic,' Snyder noted. 'In the United States, institutional Catholic Church leaders have been on the wrong side of the right to arms for self-defense issue. ... Let them consider that the right to life does not end with birth but continues throughout natural life and includes the right to self-defense and the right to arms for self-defense.'" ...

"Having a ready to use source of ammunition, is important insurance against the day of need. We can own the best weapons and gear, but without a source of usable ammunition, all we have is an expensive club. Insuring our supplies will be ready to use tomorrow or fifty plus years from now should be a top priority for the survival minded person."

"I store all of my ammo in military ammo cans that I get from the local surplus store. I look over each can, choosing only the ones that are not dented or warped and in overall good condition. I take the cans home clean them and apply several coats of black paint to each one, letting it dry for several days before putting it into storage." ...

"A jubiliant, and optimistic bunch, after the high court's decision to strike down D.C.'s handgun ban, the National Rifle Association used what they say was a 'very encouraging' ruling to suggest, in the words of the group's lawyer,C.D. Michel, that 'it was just a start.'"

"Proving that they don't let any grass grow under their feet, on Thursday, the NRA sued the city of Chicago over its handgun ban and, on Friday, continued by legally challenging San Francisco's ban on handguns in its public housing." ...

"Before you allow your children to visit to your neighbors home to play, try asking these questions to those neighbors:"

"Do you keep guns in your home? And if you do, is the ammunition stored separately and locked up?"

"The reaction to even asking for such information will give us a good idea how far the paranoia has come in the United States on this subject. ..." ...

"Whether its loaded or unloaded, your 10-year-old son or, yes, daughter ... will be pulling out daddy's handgun to see if it looks like 007's. Leaving it loaded, even with the safety lock on, is child endangerment. It should be legally prosecutable by penalties commensurate with, say, holding your kids over a cliff." ...

Submitter's Note: And here I would say that leaving your children so ignorant of guns that they have to pull out daddy's handgun to see what it looks like is child endangerment.

"'The Supreme Court on Thursday all but ensured that even more Americans will die,' the New York Times said."

"'[T]he Second Amendment protects the right to bear arms only in relation to service in a state militia,' added the Washington Post."

"Those are a few of many editorial expressions of disgust from the mainstream press over the Supreme Court's ruling that when the Bill of Rights says that 'the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed,' it includes the right to possess guns for self-defense, and not merely a right to be armed as a member of the National Guard." ...

"With the recent Supreme Court decision on the Second Amendment ... it seems like a good time to collect my thoughts on guns, crime, self-protection and human behavior." ...

"Common sense among politicians seems in steep decline. Several candidates and big-city mayors have made statements recently implying that while certain forms of gun ownership may be OK for places like Wyoming and Montana, gun ownership has no place in large metropolitan areas. While there may be some need to defend against angry gangs of elk in the West, there would seem to be a need for more legal guns in the hands of trained owners in our largest cities because that's where the bad guys are preying on the poor and defenseless every day." ...

"The Supreme Court has rendered one of the most important decisions in decades, a decision that affects the fundamental freedoms of every American. In the case of District of Columbia v. Heller, the Court affirmed that the Second Amendment to the Constitution protects an individual's right to keep and bear arms."

"The District of Columbia has deprived law-abiding citizens of this basic constitutional right. And D.C. has not been the only city to try banning law-abiding residents from owning firearms."

Police say they've arrested a man who tried to tunnel into his neighbor's home.

It was early Sunday, investigators say, when Mark Mazur snuck into a yard on San Luis and dug a tunnel under the fence.

But his clandestine plan was thwarted by the homeowner's dog. When he heard his dog barking, Robert Cash came outside -- armed with a handgun -- and ordered the intruder to stop.

Mazur, armed with a blowtorch, started towards Cash. Investigators say Cash fired once and missed Mazur, but the shot was enough to convince him to stop and wait for police to arrive.

Mazur, 56, has several prior arrests around the Bay Area. He was charged with burglary and assault.

A woman shot and killed her husband at their home outside of El Dorado, and the Union County sheriff says the slaying was in self-defense.

Sheriff Ken Jones said the incident happened around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, when deputies found 47 year-old Roger Gates dead inside the home. Jones says 37 year-old Kimberly Gates told him that her husband had attacked her and that she was afraid for her life and her baby's. Officials say she was able to get away from her husband, get a gun from the bathroom, and shoot him.

Jones said the case is still under investigation and that the results will be given to a prosecutor, who will determine if charges should be filed.

"The Supreme Court's repeal of the ban on handguns in Washington, D.C., may be a boon for a segment of the firearms industry whose last major windfall might have been in the heyday of the Dirty Harry movies: those who make and sell revolvers."

"The court ruled that a blanket ban on handguns is unconstitutional, but D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and other Washington officials want to keep in place a prohibition on semiautomatic handguns those in which a bullet clip is inserted into the gun's grip."

"Such a ban would continue to outlaw 9-mm and other popular pistols that are legal in most other places around the United States. And it would make the classic six-shooter the only legal handgun in the District." ...

"To get a glimpse of what we are in for after the Supreme Court recently threw in with libertarians and the gun lobby, turn to Atlanta's airport, Hartsfield-Jackson International. What is locally billed as a showdown - 'high noon' style - is brewing there."

"So far, only words and attitudes have been slung, not bullets, but, well?"

"Later, who knows? The city has barred guns from its airport, despite a contrary statute enacted by the state legislature this year and despite the high court's endorsement of the law, as that statute's enthusiasts take the recent ruling to be." ...
