"Daily for the past three years, passengers at U.S. airports surrendered an average of 14,000 potential weapons. That is enough to arm every passenger on 33 filled-to-capacity Boeing 747 jumbo jets every day."
"Despite intensifying concern about terrorism since the 9/11 attacks, the rate of finding such items is actually increasing. It rose from about 11 potential weapons surrendered per 1,000 originating passengers in 2003 to more than 12 last year."
"We can't really speculate why people keep bringing prohibited items," |

"Electronic checks that could identify terrorist suspects before they board a plane to Britain may be rushed in amid heightened concerns over port security in the wake of the suicide bombings."
"The 'e-borders' scheme - under which passengers' details will automatically be scanned against police, intelligence and immigration watchlists before they reach the boarding gate - is not due to be introduced until 2008. "The NRA further solidified its reputation for multi-tasking in politics when it made a big show of announcing that Columbus would not be the site of its 2007 convention."
"The ostensible reason: Enactment by Columbus City Council of a tough new ban against assault weapons, effective later this year."
"Never mind that the NRA had never signed a contract for the convention, which was supposed to draw 60,000 visitors and spending of $15 million to $20 million to Ohio's capital city in two years."
"That salient fact didn't keep Wayne LaPierre, the NRA's top gun, from jetting in to condemn the weapons ban and proclaim the whole affair as 'an unnecessary loss and an embarrassment to the city of Columbus' and its 'radical city council.'"

"Three rural Republican lawmakers took Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tim Kaine to task for his record on gun rights Friday, seeking to capitalize on an issue that they believe favors GOP nominee Jerry Kilgore."
"Kaine, the lieutenant governor, has said repeatedly that he respects the rights of law-abiding gun-owners and has no plans to them. But Dels. Bill Carrico of Grayson County, Robert Hurt of Chatham and Chris Saxman of Staunton said Kaine's record as Richmond's mayor from 1998 to 2001 undercuts his campaign pledge. Their criticism underscores the Kilgore campaign's emphasis on gun issues, which Gov. Mark Warner, a Democrat, effectively neutralized in his 2001 election victory." |
