... "... (T)he Klan had a problem. Surprised by the dash into Andrey's parking lot, they had jumped the CORE activists at the edge of Bogalusa's Negro community. This wasn't some lonely road with no witnesses. Although the streets had emptied . . there were any number of witnesses peeking out from windows and doorways. . Even so, the Klan had reigned around Bogalusa for almost a hundred years. . But still, their courage . . failed them. Too stupid to carry out their original plan correctly, too scared to finish the job and too proud to just call it a day and drive away, they waited. . .until something very strange happened. . something almost unprecedented . . (that they never) thought would happen. And that something was the Deacons." ...

"I went to my first gun show recently - part of my ongoing remedial education in American cultural literacy, which my (American) wife has lately taken in hand - and I have been turning the experience over in my mind these past few days. As a Brit, of course, I was conditioned to expect that the first time I saw an unholstered pistol would be when a mugger stuck one in my face. That is how it works in a civilised country. So for me it was passing strange to see many hundreds of pistols - not to mention shotguns, assault rifles, armour-piercing bullets, laser-sighting attachments and all manner of other lethal weaponry - arrayed for the delectation of ordinary citizens. They let me pick up a gun, for heaven's sake!" ...

"I just noticed this: Last week two Chicago suburbs, Morton Grove and Wilmette, repealed their handgun bans in response to D.C. v. Heller, the Supreme Court decision that overturned the Washington, D.C., handgun ban. After Heller, Second Amendment advocates sued Morton Grove, along with Chicago and two other suburbs, Evanston and Oak Park, over their handgun bans. Wilmette was not sued, apparently because it stopped enforcing its ban following the ruling." ...

"In March 2006, Indiana became one of the few states to put into statute that an individual does not have a duty to retreat from an attacker before using deadly force to prevent injury to one's self. At the same time, Indiana passed a law establishing a life-time firearms carrying permit, eliminating much of the hassle of carrying a firearm while maintaining a program of scrutiny as to who is legally carrying a weapon. Recently, the United States Supreme Court held that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that (fire) arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home for the first time in history. ..." ...

"As intended, the 'Guns kill people' article by Corbin Martin will stir the pot on this ... issue. First, let me give my answer to the question posed: 'Do you like sitting next to a student who has a pistol in his backpack?' It depends. If I'm under fire from an attacker ... then I hope he is well armed and an excellent combat marksman and in the seat in front of me! If he has a mental health history that was protected by privacy laws, then I guess not."

A Juneau gun store is being sued by the family of an Anchorage man who was fatally shot with a rifle bought there.

The lawsuit against Rayco Sales was filed Thursday on behalf of the family of Simone Young Kim by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence and Juneau attorney Mark Choate.

According to the plaintiffs, Rayco negligently supplied Jason Cody with the rifle even though he was a fugitive and a methamphetamine user and therefore prohibited from buying or possessing guns.

The shooting occurred two days later on Aug. 4, 2006, in Juneau. At the time, the victim was a painter working on a retail remodeling project.

"In a very foolish move, the City of Washington D.C. has put itself back in the position of being sued by the same man for the same reasons, in just over a month. Dick Heller was victorious on June 26th, when the U.S. Supreme Court handed down the historic judgment ... but in a rather stupid move, the city of Washington D.C. decided to only barely modify their handgun law to squeak by. Some of the provisions kept are clearly at odds with the Supreme Court ruling."

"The city said they would allow registration of revolvers but kept their ban on semiautomatic firearms capable of accepting a 12 shot magazine ... this rule effectively outlaws all semiautomatic firearms in the city. ..." ...

Second Amendment guarantees our rights

"The Supreme Court recently struck down a gun ban and affirmed that the Second Amendment to keep and use firearms was an individual right. While this seems gun-rights friendly, the majority opinion contains serious flaws. The opinion is self-contradictory by first acknowledging a pre-existing right and later claiming that it is the Second Amendment that confers a right to gun ownership. This claim is directly at odds with the clear intent of the Founding Fathers, and leaves the door open for untold infringements to a citizen's lawful right to self-defense." ...

"The vendor, Daniel Vargas, is due next month in court to fight misdemeanor charges that he kept an unlicensed revolver loaded on a basement shelf in his apartment. The case ... would be of little general interest, except for the fact that the U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that the Second Amendment protects a right to keep a handgun at home for self-defense."
