"'Guns should be the subject of worldwide outrage. Their manufacture and sale should be a human-rights abuse, on which we pour vilification and horror. They should be illegal for all but properly constituted, trained and controlled agencies of governments, provided of course that the governments in question are themselves properly constituted and controlled by democratic means in a society where the rule of law obtains.'"

A violent crime task force in Vermont is making inroads into firearms trafficking networks that link some of North America's biggest cities and run through Vermont.

The eight-man unit, run by the Vermont office of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, includes lawmen from ATF, the Vermont State Police, the Addison County sheriff's department and the U.S. Border Patrol. Established four years ago, it added a Border Patrol representative in 2010.

Ten years after Michigan made it much easier for its citizens to get a license to carry a concealed gun, predictions of widespread lawless behavior and bloodshed have failed to materialize.

Advocates for concealed carry rights contend they have been vindicated. Violent crime is down, said Steve Dulan, a board member for the Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners.

Breaking with a 1996 landmark decision, a sharply divided Michigan Supreme Court said that Wayne County and its sheriff's office can't be sued by a woman who was raped by a deputy at the county jail.

The four-justice majority said that the jailor was acting outside his official duties, thus the county and sheriff's office could not be held liable because his conduct could not be foreseen.

Associated Press reporting on the Gunwalker (Fast and Furious) scandal has been sporadic but fair. However, not many newspapers around the country have picked up the APs stories on Gunwalker, apparently because they would rather cover up than expose scandals that originate in the Obama administration.

A sleepy Home Counties market town has become the first in Britain to have every car passing through it tracked by police cameras.
Royston, in Hertfordshire, has had a set of police cameras installed on every road leading in and out of it, recording the numberplate of every vehicle that passes them.
The automatic number-plate recognition system will check the plates against a variety of databases, studying them for links to crimes, and insurance and tax records, and alerting police accordingly.
There were just seven incidents of vehicle crime in the town last month, and residents believe the unmarked cameras are an invasion of their privacy.

MEXICO CITY -- While a gunrunning sting known as Fast and Furious draws criticism in Congress for losing track of weapons that were smuggled into Mexico, Mexicans say the controversy confirms their conviction that the U.S. gun industry profits off of bloodshed south of the border.

Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee and Poison frontman Brett Michaels could face gun crime charges after a local TV station reported them to police.

The pair had taken time off from their co-headlining US tour to visit a shooting range in North Carolina and were photographed posing with guns, but could be prosecuted as at least one of them has a criminal record which prevents them from operating a gun legally.

Despite serious privacy concerns being voiced by both Democratic and Republican leaders and by thousands of digital rights activists using EFF's Action Center, this afternoon the House Judiciary Committee voted 19 to 10 to recommend passage of H.R. 1981. That bill contains a mandatory data retention provision that would require your Internet service providers to retain 12 months' worth of personal information that could be used to identify what web sites you visit and what content you post online.

Those included a budget that cut spending and did not raise taxes, as well as bills to expand a persons right to use deadly force in self-defense; expand the authority of the Corbett administration to make changes to programs for the poor and disabled; and scale back the liability of some civil court defendants in negligence cases, the top priority of business advocates.

"Whether the right to bear arms extends to outside the home is the next battlefield," said Adam Winkler, a law professor at UCLA and a Second Amendment expert. "And if that right does exist, courts then have to wrestle with a whole host of other issues, like how far it extends and what kinds of permitting regimes are permissible."

The Illinois suits challenge the constitutionality of the state's gun-control laws, which ban nearly everyone from carrying firearms outside their homes and are widely considered the most restrictive in the country.

CA: Legal guns would make Norway safer

How long would the Norway gunman have lasted in Texas or any state where concealed-carry laws are on the books? I ran a survey while on a cruise: in Texas, 3 minutes; in Montana, 7 to 8 minutes; in Arizona, 2 minutes; and in Nevada, 3 to 5 minutes.

Had Norway not surrendered to the anti-self-defense nuts, and allowed Norwegians to protect themselves by legally carrying guns, the massacre might well have been prevented. There's a lot of truth in the old adage that if guns are outlawed only outlaws will carry guns.
