A break-in at a Polk County home put dozens of guns in the hands of criminals, deputies said Monday. One or more people broke a back window of a home in the Babson Park community and stole a suitcase full of handguns and a safe containing 14 rifles. "It's very concerning that all these guns are out on the street," said Carrie Horstman, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office. "The good news is the victim had a very good record-keeping system. He had serial numbers for every one of those guns."

Our political discourse can often give one the impression that college students, to a man (or woman), are opposed to concealed-carry rights on college campuses. But this isnt the caseand one senior at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas proves it. Not allowing college students with a state issued conceal carry permit exercise their right to self-defense while on campus is illogical, writes Caitlin OShei at Medium, and the knee jerk emotional arguments of opponents of campus carry do not stand up to scrutiny.

Whatever else Arizona might be, it is a state with lots of gun owners and the state Department of Transportation obviously recognizes this and has added some tips on traffic stop etiquette in its Driver License Manual for armed motorists who might get stopped on the highway. The odds of police encounters with legally armed citizens are going up in the Grand Canyon State, with approximately 319,000 active concealed weapons permits in the state. And that doesnt count the number of people who may, under Arizona law, be exercising constitutional carry without a permit.

Key parts of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's controversial SAFE Act gun control law would become illegal under federal legislation proposed Monday by Rep. Chris Collins. Collins, a Clarence Republican, scheduled press conferences in the Rochester and Buffalo areas Monday afternoon to announce his proposal, called the Second Amendment Guarantee Act. The bill would prevent states from implementing any gun regulations that are more strict than those set by federal law. Collins said that if passed, most of the language in New York's Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act would become void.

Hearing aids that can cost more than $2,000 apiece are only slightly more effective than some over-the-counter sound-amplification devices that sell for just a few hundred dollars, according to a recent study. The study bolsters legislation pending in Congress, which would have the Food and Drug Administration set regulations for cheaper over-the-counter products and is designed to make the devices more widely accessible and safer. Consumers with mild to moderate hearing loss would be able to purchase the devices without a prescription and without a medical exam, knowing they meet federal safety standards.

It is bad enough that our city is awash with illegal guns. But to think that the cops themselves might be the source of some of those guns or of even one. That would be a new low. The onus is on Police Supt. Eddie Johnson to solve this one or watch the publics trust in our local police crumble just a little more. Five years ago, according to a Better Government Association report in Sundays Sun-Times, a handgun turned up next to the body of a gang member who was shot to death by a Cicero police officer.

Labor Day weekend is right around the corner and, if youre a hunter like me, it marks the official start of dove season in most parts of Texas. That leads into quail season, which leads into turkey season, and eventually into deer season. But before any hunting trip comes the expectation that hunters of all ages understand and follow proper firearm safety to keep themselves and others out of harm's way.

Gov.
