"The baby needs milk. The car needs gas. The gun needs bullets."

"Rising dairy and oil prices grab the attention of shoppers and motorists. But the increasing price of ammunition a consumer product the government considers when calculating the rate of inflation has largely gone unnoticed."

"The price increases began after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, then were compounded by a double whammy: the war in Iraq, which pushed up overall demand, and growing industrial powers such as China, which bid up the cost of needed raw materials." ...

"Before I launch into the substance of this book, I must admit two things. One, I get a little squeamish about the idea of owning a gun ... And two, Philadelphia-based photographer/author Kyle Cassidy is a friend of a friend, and so I had heard tales of the book-to-be long before it officially emerged. However, my choice to write about Armed America has nothing to do with cronyism or any ideological stance; instead it is based on my complete absorption in the book each time I pick it up. I find myself peering into every corner of the richly detailed portraits, laughing at absurd scenes and out-of-control pets, marveling at the diversity of human self-expression and questioning my own perceptions of guns and gun ownership." ...

"It's time for parents to make the annual trek to get back to school items, which usually includes jeans, jerseys and a few notebooks."

"NewsCenter 5's Pam Cross reported Thursday that a couple of North Shore men want parents to consider something else -- a bulletproof backpack." ...

"It started with the Columbine shooting in 1999. Curran and Mike Pelonzi said that they watched and worried for their own children. They had the idea to hide bulletproof material inside a backpack. They call it defensive action."

"'If the kid has a backpack next to them, or under the desk, they can pick it up, the straps act as a handle and it becomes a shield,' Curran said." ...

"A few Ventura County cities have recently passed, or are considering passing, ordinances requiring gun owners to report the loss or theft of their firearms, typically within 48 hours of when the owner knew or 'should have known' the gun was missing. Gun-control advocacy groups ... disingenuously claim the law will prevent unlawful sales of firearms by purchasers who buy a gun legally, intending to resell it illegally on the black market. These 'straw' purchasers often falsely claim that a crime gun traced back to them was stolen or lost." ...

"Ironically, the ordinance cannot be used against the real bad guys. No law can compel lawbreakers to report themselves. ..." ...

"Faster than a speeding bullet, distortions of Rep. Randy Kuhl's comments to this Editorial Board about 'packin' sped across cyberspace this week."

"What was a casually spoken one-liner at the very end of a substantive more-than-hour-long meeting with Kuhl quickly became liberal blogger fodder along the lines that Kuhl is thinking of arming himself against anti-war protesters."

"That's a pretty picture for Kuhl's political enemies a sitting congressman reacting to peace-loving demonstrators with a snarling reference to packin' guns. Trouble is, it's not true." ...

"Roughly six months into his term as a state legislator, Rep. William Tong (D-Stamford, New Canaan) has had one part of his campaign platform actualized: gun control."

"Gov. M. Jodi Rell recently signed legislation that requires owners of lost and stolen firearms to report stolen or missing weapons. ... the law imposes stricter penalties for gun owners who fail to do so."

"Tong sponsored the bill ... The Stamford resident also has personal ties to this bill. His mother was robbed and stabbed almost four years ago at the store she and her husband ran in Manchester. The thief claimed to have a gun, but actually had a knife. His mother has since recovered from her injuries." ...

"It's one idea some have said could have played a key role in the Tech tragedy: allowing students and university staff to carry firearms on campus. And it's part of Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling's '100 ideas for the future of Virginia.'"

"Bolling has visited communities across the Commonwealth the ideas come from what he's heard. Currently, most colleges and universities in the state of Virginia do not allow students or staff to carry weapons despite concealed carry permits. If you aren't a student or staff, you can."

"This idea calls for legislation to prevent colleges and universities from making those bans legally." ...

"Amid concerns of growing gun violence, the Sacramento City Council Thursday night approved new laws aimed at thwarting a firearms black market that police say allows illegal weapons to proliferate."

"'Cities are stepping up to curb gun violence. Tonight, Sacramento stepped up to the plate,' said Councilman Kevin McCarty, who sponsored the pair of ordinances."

"That's how a Boise attorney responded to a federal agency's claim that his client, the manager of a local gun store, harassed and intimidated agents until they left the store."

"The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives exaggerated its July 17 claim that Red's Trading Post Manager Ryan Horsley intimidated its agents, wrote Horsley's attorney, Mark S. Geston, in a response filed Aug. 6 in federal court."

The BATFE claims agents were harassed while conducting an audit at Reds Trading Post on July 17th. But attorney Mark Geston told the Federal Court that nothing much happened and that the charges of harassment were exaggerated. Its part of an ongoing battle between Reds and the BATF which started several years ago after a series of audits.
