Thank you, Contra Costa Times, for your front-page headliner "An Eye on Public Safety, Everybody Pays" (July 23). Although the devastating effects on family and friends resulting from gun violence are our foremost concern, the Brady Million Mom March Chapters have been well aware of the exorbitant financial costs to our communities and taxpayers. |

"Amanda Ait-Jilal, a 27-year-old transsexual convicted for drug dealing, was in her cell wondering how she'd get through another year in jail when the prison guard came round."

'A SPINELESS retard with the character of pond scum." A "whacko," "greedy un-American idiot," "fascist," "whining liberal" and "nasty little gun grabber." Those are just some of the names I've been called since I published an Op-Ed article in the Washington Post to commemorate the fifth anniversary of my brother's death. After briefly stating that David and his fiancee were shot and killed by the fiancee's mother, I went on to argue for a national ban on handguns. |

A battle is brewing about the mayors proposed ordinance aimed at regulating target shooting. Proponents say they are concerned about residents safety. Some of the ordinances opponents say it prohibits all shooting in town and takes away their self-defense rights. The Town Council is expected to decide Monday night whether to move the proposed ordinance, which has gained the attention of the National Rifle Association, forward to a public hearing. The ordinance was proposed after it was discovered the state regulates hunting, but not target shooting. |

While it is just a little more than two months old, a new Alabama law regarding a residents right to kill in self-defense is still generating strong opinions within the law enforcement community. Dubbed the castle law," it states that Alabama residents now have the right to stand their ground if threatened and use force, including deadly force, in certain situations. In Tuscaloosa County, the district attorney and public defender worry that the Legislatures relaxation of the self-defense restrictions could lead to vigilantism. |

Whenever I breathe even a word about guns in this space or other media outlets, I can expect a rapid-fire barrage of irate e-mails from gun advocates. Im surprised they can afford so much free time away from keeping their firearms collections well polished. These attacks presume much about my position on gun control, typically making reference to my ilk. Well, Ive decided to mark my one-year anniversary writing for the Herald by clearing the air of lingering gun smoke. A few bullet points may actually surprise those of my counter-ilk. |

Concerned about the use of toy guns in real crimes and the prospect of an officer mistakenly shooting a child, Dallas is poised to ban the sale and possession of all toy guns except those painted bright colors such as neon yellow or hot pink. Although some experts are skeptical it will have an effect, the ban would mirror toy-gun laws that New York City and state passed in the late 1990s that go beyond federal provisions requiring toy makers to put blaze-orange caps over the gun barrels. |

An off-duty Colonial Heights police lieutenant was fatally injured yesterday when his car was struck head-on by a Chesterfield County officer pursuing a felon in a speeding van weaving through traffic at speeds over 100 mph. The Chesterfield officer was in pursuit of a suspect identified as Douglas Michael Brown Jr., 36. Police said Brown, who remained at large last night, has a lengthy criminal history and should be considered armed and dangerous. --- And with a "lengthy criminal history," Brown was out of prison why? And armed how? Doesn't he know that's illegal? |

CHICAGO -- Someone shot and killed an ice cream man in Chicago Sunday night.
Police said he was shot as he drove his ice cream truck through the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side.
As the vehicle came to a rest, music that's typically deployed to draw the attention of children and their parents continued to play over the truck's loudspeakers. Submitters Note: Chicago has total prohibition of handguns. One more time: Gun control doesnt work. |

City Council members in Minneola typically trade shots over issues such as homes, schools and roads. But last Tuesday the council spent part of their time discussing whether council member Shane Perreault had taken a gun to the meeting.
Fellow council member Joe Teri spotted Perreault wearing a holster on his waist. That sparked enough concern that Teri mentioned it to council member Ed Earl and Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Greg Link. |

A hand-picked team of detectives, plainclothes and uniformed officers has been selected to prowl the most crime-ridden Yonkers streets and take guns away from criminals, Police Commissioner Robert Taggart said. The "gun team" hit the streets Wednesday night in the wake of an outbreak of shootings recently in the city, including shootings last weekend in which three men were wounded and three others arrested. "We put together a team of specially selected detectives, anti-crime unit officers and uniformed officers to do some intelligence and surveillance in areas where there is gun activity," Taggart said. |

James Alan Fox at the Boston Herald is portraying hmself as being more 'rational' concerning gun ownership. Apparently James has felt the wrath of the American gun owning public in the past; . "Whenever I breathe even a word about guns in this space or other media outlets, I can expect a rapid-fire barrage of irate e-mails from gun advocates. Im surprised they can afford so much free time away from keeping their firearms collections well polished."

Every sunny Sunday, for residents along Gerrard Avenue in Yaphank it sounds like the Fourth of July -- with sporadic bursts of gunfire from a nearby shotgun range shattering the peace of the afternoon. Residents there joined with the Long Island Pine Barrens Society and filed a lawsuit last week to close the range , arguing that the facility at Southhaven County Park produces "insufferable noise," and is illegal under the Pine Barrens Act. |
