"The campaign group, Human Rights Watch, has accused the United States Government of secret arrests, arbitrary detentions and of violating due process in its response to the 11 September attacks."

"In a new report, Human Rights Watch says more than 1,200 non-American citizens have been secretly arrested and jailed - the vast majority from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia."

"Many, it says, have been subjected to treatment in violation of American law."

Travelers still pack banned items - 2.5 tons worth

"Dallas/Fort Worth Airport is deep into the war on terrorism. About 2.5 tons deep in confiscated items, including 15 handguns, 10 illegal knives and three clubs."

"Like many of the nation's 429 commercial airports, D/FW Airport made myriad changes to its passenger security checkpoints. And, despite repeated warnings from the aviation industry - including information on extensive lists of items banned by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration - passengers are still showing up at the terminals carrying prohibited items."

"Since Sept. 11, D/FW has had 28 weapons violations, most of which were caught by X-ray machines, said Alvy Dodson, the airport's vice president of public safety." [emphasis added]

"We arrested every one of them. They went to our jail," Dodson said Wednesday at the Texas Transportation Summit in Irving. "Most of them told us they forgot it was in there - it was the Barry Switzer syndrome."

"Switzer, then coach of the Dallas Cowboys, was arrested in August 1997 at D/FW Airport after an employee at an X-ray machine found a loaded revolver in his duffel bag. He said at the time that he had forgotten the gun was in the bag."

"Another obstacle [to new restrictions] could be whether passengers are willing to comply with the new rules. For example, parking at the curbside outside D/FW's baggage claim area has been banned. Did that translate into empty curbsides?"

" 'We've had an average of 1,700 citations a month for leaving your vehicle unattended at the curbside,' [Alvy] Dodson [the airport's vice president of public safety] said."

"For more than twenty years, now, my kids have wondered if their dear old dad was just a bit 'cracked'. That's how long I've been watching what's happening in the world and insisting that they have some inkling of how to survive if the socio-economic structure of society were to break down, but of course it hasn't happened yet. So they're pretty sure by now that Dad is a crackpot."

"But lately, as they have matured and seen some of the real world with their own eyes, they haven't quite voiced that opinion as often as they used to."

"Remember the so-called epidemic of carjackings in the early 1990s? Motivated by the hue and cry and the need to appear responsive, Congress passed a law in 1992 that made it a federal felony to carjack a vehicle. Henceforth, carjackings could bring 15 years in federal prison, 25 if someone got hurt and the death penalty if the victim died."

"But, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the federal government prosecutes only about 230 carjacking cases annually. All other cases addressing the 49,000 carjackings attempted or completed each year are filed under the state laws that existed before the federal law took effect."

Air marshal program in disarray, insiders say Dozens of top agents have quit the service

"For years, the government touted federal air marshals as the best of the best -- an 'elite corps' of undercover officers trained to stop hijackings on commercial flights."

"But today, after rushing to hire thousands of new marshals, the program is so beset with problems that sources say at least 80 marshals have quit, and other marshals say they are considering a class-action lawsuit over working conditions that they fear put travelers at risk."

Among the problems USA Today reports at the link above are:
 Experienced marshals leaving.
 Lowering standards.
Hiring people who haven't passed marksmanship tests or background checks.
No ammo to train with, and no time to train anyway.
Marshals showing up smelling of alcohol.
Marshals accidentally firing their guns in their hotel rooms.
Dress codes, so they can be profiled and targeted by terrorists.
Incompetence at scheduling, wasting time on the taxpayer dollar
Even the leader of the air marshal program, Tom Quinn, confesses to serious problems. Quinn says a portion of the air marshals are "isgruntled individuals who are total amateurs."

After reading the USA Today report, another KABA reader, Mark A., said:
"Many marshalls are disillusioned by a program that one says has become 'like security-guard training for the mall.' Hiring standards have been lowered. The advanced marksmanship requirement eliminated. New hires were given badges and guns and put on planes before background checks were complete. A dress code has been adopted that many fear will identify marshalls to hijackers. Some marshalls don't fly for weeks, while others are working 16 hour days.
Do you feel safer? I don't."
It time to arm the pilots.

Requests questions/comments to be sent to Mayor Stover of Aurora, IL and the police to stop gang violence.

"Police believe the shooting death of Wright on Saturday has sparked a string of shootings among local gang members."

"Police have no one in custody in connection with any of the shootings. Lawler made a plea Wednesday for anyone with information to come forward."

KABA NOTE: Lawful, peaceable gunowners have a vested interest in seeing gang-related violence come to an end -- it's where the anti-gun crowd gets the bulk of their inflated stats on "children who die by guns".

Scotland: Violent crime jumps by 15%

Violent crime in Scotland's largest police force area has jumped by almost 15% compared with a year ago.
A total of 4,330 violent crimes were recorded in the Strathclyde Police force area during the three months to June, a 14.5% increase on the figure for the same period last year.

Chief Constable William Rae was disappointed by the rise, which he says is partly explained by increased seizures of weapons.

"These figures are extremely worrying and we have to hope that they don't represent a longer-term trend. I would be very interested to hear from the police in Strathclyde as to what their explanation for this jump is." --Scottish National Party justice spokeswoman

"It is largely the people carrying offensive weapons that is the big worry. We have tried everything to reduce that and we are not having much success." --Chief Constable William Rae

But handguns are completely banned, and access to most others is so restricted only a tiny minority can legally access them.

Only education will save the republic that our Constitution preserves, and gain the respect for the document that it so richly deserves."

"Senior citizens throughout Bergen County are learning from a teenager with a black belt that even older people aren't totally helpless in an encounter with someone who means them no good."

"Leah Schoen, a 17-year-old student from Fair Lawn with martial-arts training, decided to share some self-defense techniques with the elderly after her grandmother's brush with street crime."

KABA NOTE: The grandmother in the picture on the above linked website would go to jail on felony charges if she was "caught" carrying a handgun to defend herself. It's great to see our seasoned citizens learning a few combat techniques -- but expecting a frail older woman to successfully use her bare hands against a gang of young, strong, mean, murderous thugs is ludicrous.

New Jersey is in serious need of concealed carry decriminalization.

Their suggestions for dealing with an attack include:
 Dress to Kill.
 Make Eye Contact.
 Fight Your Inner Woman.
 Be Paranoid and Suspicious.
 Run, Run, Run.
 Stay Put.
Hit the Attacker Where It Counts.
 Try Anything and Everything.
There is no mention of using the most effective, most affordable, easiest to use, easiest to conceal self-defense tool ever devised: the handgun. Apparently, that isn't a part of "Try Anything and Everything."

"Staying out of trouble for the past 12 years helped an Apopka man Wednesday avoid spending the rest of the decade in federal prison."

"Since being released from prison in 1990, Larry Dee Suggs has married his childhood sweetheart, raised a family and led an admirable life, according to friends, federal agents, defense attorneys and the U.S. Attorney's Office."

"In April, he was arrested for pawning his stepson's shotgun three years earlier to buy $75 worth of groceries to feed his family."

"His crime was signing a form that claimed he had never been convicted of a felony when he redeemed the shotgun a week after he pawned it."

"Federal sentencing guidelines for anyone with Suggs' past -- four felony convictions in the 1980s for drug-related crimes -- set punishment at a minimum of eight years in prison, but everyone involved in the case, including the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents who arrested Suggs, agreed justice would not have been served by sending the 38-year-old father of three back to prison."

KABA NOTE: Later in the report above, the judge said the man is "a good citizen in the community." Shouldn't such a person be "allowed" to defend his wife and children? Now let's see BATF go the distance and restore this man's rights so he can defend his family legally.
