"A 66-YEAR-OLD Montgomery, Ala., man and his handgun prevented a would-be robber from making off with a bank bag belonging to a church. The victim had arrived at a bank on a Monday morning, ready to deposit funds from his congregation, when he was approached by a man who forced him to the ground and took the money. However, the church courier stood up, drew his gun and fired a shot that foiled the crime. His attacker initially fell to the ground and subsequently fled, but dropped the bank bag in the process. Smith and Wesson says its fourth-quarter profit grew about 13 percent on stronger sales of firearms and pistols.
For the quarter ended in April, net income grew to one-point-eight (m) million dollars, from one-point-six (m) million the year before.
Revenue increased about ten percent.
The Springfield-based company says sales of firearms drove sales growth, rising twelve percent primarily due to higher demand for pistols.
Full-year sales rose to 124 (m) million dollars, up five percent from the year before.
Looking ahead, Smith and Wesson expects fiscal 2006 product sales to increase by ten-to-twelve percent.
Stock in Smith and Wesson rose almost three percent on the American Stock Exchange. |
