"A plan to place scores of surveillance cameras in high crime areas of Newark, N.J. to combat violent crime in the wake of a brutal triple murder next to an elementary school building is 'a sham solution to a serious problem,' the Second Amendment Foundation said today."
"Three college students were brutally murdered in a schoolyard Aug. 4 and a fourth was seriously wounded in a crime that has outraged residents in New Jersey and elsewhere. One of the suspects is an illegal alien. Anti-gun Newark Mayor Cory Booker, a member of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition founded by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, said $3.2 million in public and private funds will be spent on the camera project." ... -------
Submitter's Note: The UK is touted as 'the most surveilled country in the world', but their violent crime rate is between 2.5 and 4 times the US rate. |

"'Today's ruling in Brooklyn federal court by the Hon. Jack Weinstein is a significant victory in the City's campaign against illegal guns. Today's decision affirms that New Yorks Courts do indeed have jurisdiction to hear a lawsuit against out of state gun dealers whose guns most often end up in the hands of criminals. And it shows that cities can hold those who cause harm to innocent people and the police who protect us accountable. I am particularly pleased that the judge has set a trial date of January 7th, so we can prove that following common sense sales practices that comply with federal law and that dont interfere with anyones Constitutional rights can make New Yorkers safer. ...'" ... |

"Sarah Brady was recently asked to provide an essay on gun control for a new book on American politics. Heres part of what she had to say:"
"The fact is that this debate isnt about guns at all. Its about how we as a society relate to guns. Its about how we buy them, sell them, store them, and use them. When we talk about gun control, what were really talking about are ways to encourage people to behave differently around guns. A gun may be just a tool, but its a tool whose misuse can have profound and permanent consequences." "... Sarahs point is that gun violence can be addressed by encouraging people to realize that public policies and leadership can help prevent gun violence without preventing legitimate gun ownership. ..." ... |

Tough penalties are being considered for those who fire a gun in the City of Lancaster. Under a proposal that Mayor Rick Gray presented to the City Council, anyone caught firing a weapon in the city would face up to 90 days behind bars and a $500 fine.
Mayor Gray adds that penalty would be imposed for each shot fired!
"If you fire four shots, the way the ordinance is read, you'd have a $2,000 fine and a year in jail.
Gray says he's had nothing but positive comments from City Council and the community. He expects this ordinance to pass when the council votes on it August 28th.
There are exceptions, including self-defense, defense of a home, and for military ceremonies. |

What is it that is more important than our kids safety that prevents laws here from being changed?
