"One cannot hold to a fanciful, romantic, or even partially erroneous interpretation of the Constitution and nevertheless expect to be able to use the Constitution effectively to protect his rights. For his opponents will inevitably expose the flaws in his position and exploit them against him. Nowhere is this more true than with respect to the right of the people to keep and bear arms."

"Most defenders of that right begin and end with the Second Amendment: 'A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.' ..." ...

"Gun owners in Toronto may soon be prohibited from keeping their firearms at home even if they are properly licensed and registered, Mayor David Miller said yesterday."

"'There's no reason to own a gun in Toronto -- collector or not. If you are a collector and you have a permit, the guns need to be stored in a way that they can't be stolen. And perhaps a centralized facility of some kind could accomplish that goal,' Mr. Miller told the National Post. 'The law requires gun owners to have proper storage ...'"

"Following a spate of shootings in Toronto, the Mayor has asked city lawyers and the police to determine whether the municipality has the 'legal ability' to require individuals to store their weapons at a secure facility such as a gun club." ...

"Expressing concern that the United Nations' efforts to stem international gun running could impede the rights of U.S. gun owners, Sen. David Vitter, R-La., is proposing legislation to bar financing for the world organization should it infringe on Americans' Second Amendment rights."

"Critics of Vitter's bill, including Eric Howard of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, accuse the freshman senator of placating voters who oppose gun control and are cynical about the United Nations. Howard said the bill could torpedo international efforts to stem the flow of arms to brutal militias in Africa and elsewhere that target civilians, particularly children." ...

"Recently, I had the pleasure of spending time with two companies within the firearms arena that have dedicated themselves to offering products that will help good guys get this first-shot advantage. XS Sight Systems offers the Express fast-acquisition sight system for handguns and long guns. "We all know the history, how Elmer Keith loaded the .44 Special case to its 'true potential' and created the precursor to the .44 Magnum. And in so doing, he embarrassed the ammunition- and handgun-makers into realizing what a great cartridge they had been overlooking."

"Nonsense. What Elmer Keith did to achieve his breakthrough was simple: He designed a bullet with more of its shape (and thus volume) out of the case than in. Doing so gave him more case capacity. And he used slower-burning powders than had previously been used for handguns. ... And finally, he exceeded the pressure limits of the .44 Special, something he could do only because of the greater strength of the Smith & Wesson revolvers he was using." ...

"... I'm actually standing by a water cooler perched on the gate of a pickup, the only respite on a blistering-hot range for a Saturday match hosted by the local International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) club. A couple of new shooters are chugging the still-cool water, talking about the match and congratulating themselves for their decision to shoot IDPA rather than one of the other practical shooting sports."

"'At least I'll be ready if I ever have to defend myself with my gun,' says one."

"Cimarron Firearms has long been known for importing the best-quality handguns and rifles produced by the Beretta-owned firm of Aldo Uberti. One material Uberti has always been loath to work with is stainless steel. It is much harder on the tools and creates the headache of keeping otherwise look-alike stainless and carbon-steel parts separate throughout the finishing process."

"Knock wood, but I don't get skunked very often on big-game hunts. Many people hold the opinion that I am just plain lucky. The fact of the matter is I make my own luck by hunting hard regardless of the weather, knowing the game I am hunting, and shooting straight with a good rifle and bullet when the time comes."

"There are those few times when all my efforts fail and I strike out. Like the time I hunted mule deer in northern Utah with bulletmaker Bob Nosler, his son John, and Chub Eastman, who works for the Nosler company. ... "SINCE MARCH, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports, three residents of that city have killed criminal attackers. Authorities will press no charges against at least two of the shooters. One dispatched former NFL football player Mike Brim with a single shot after an armed Brim had followed the man, apparently a romantic rival, to a house and opened fire on him. The other self-defender was a pizza deliveryman who killed a robber."

"... [T]he bearing of arms by the law-abiding cited above brings an obvious thought: Had the intended victims in Richmond dwelt in Washington or New York City ... they likely would have joined many of those cities' other crime victims on a slab."

Orchard Park resident David Smith is requesting approval to operate a small gun business out of his home in a town neighborhood. Weapons he would offer include rifles, shotguns, and assault weapons.

The Planning Board in Orchard Park has already recommended approval of the request. Smith says the bulk of his sales will take place at trade shows, with only 15 percent of sales taking place at his home. He also states no advertising or signage would be involved.

Before Smith will be permitted to sell any firearms out of his house, the measure needs final approval from the Town Board. A public hearing on the issue will be held tomorrow night.

Winston-Salem police continued searching yesterday for a man who stole a patrol car after being handcuffed in the back seat.

Derrick Devon Reid, 31, was arrested by Officer Eric Olsen in the 2800 block of Piedmont Circle about 6:30 p.m. Saturday on a charge of assaulting a female.

The officer opened a sliding window between the front and back of the car so that Reid, while handcuffed in the back, could get some ventilation on a hot day, police Capt. Alonzo Thompson said.

Reid then crawled through the window and drove off in the car. The car was found shortly after in the 2700 block of Claremont Avenue.

Reid has also been charged with larceny of a vehicle, larceny and obstructing an officer.
