"The First and Second Amendments of the Constitution are twin pillars of Americas unique form of self-government. Having spent two decades defending one of those pillars, I am grateful to Rush Limbaugh for defending the other on a scale few can equal." ...
"First Amendment freedom is so important to preserving Second Amendment freedom that the National Rifle Association hosted Rush Limbaugh as keynote speaker at our 1993 Annual Meeting in Nashville. Our member's banquet sold out, drawing the largest crowd in NRA history ever to hear a banquet speaker a record that stands today. As Rush stood at the podium, I could see on his face astonishment at the thunderous applause from our members ..." ... |

"In his July 31 blog entry, 'Postcard from the gun show,' Financial Times correspondent and loyal subject of Queen Elizabeth II Clive Crook admits that he 'may get thrown out of Georgetown for this,' but he applauds the rugged individualism of the American gun owner.:""Aside from other motivations-sport, self-defence-the gun-show universe is about pride, self-reliance, and resentment at being bossed around. Distinctively American traits, wouldn't you say? Best in moderation, no doubt-but still, where would the country be without those attitudes? I may get thrown out of Georgetown for this, but I say, good for them." ...

"This week, a toddler fatally shot himself after finding a gun in his parent's car. According to Jackson, Miss., authorities, the 3-year-old was sitting in the car at a gas station when he found the gun in the front seat and shot himself in the face. Police questioned the boy's parents, but no charges have been filed."
"But these aren't freak accidents. More than 500 children die annually from accidental gunshots. Some shoot themselves, while others kill friends or siblings after discovering a gun." ... -------
KABA Note: According to the CDC about one-tenth of that number of 'kids' (age 0 to 12) are accidentally killed by guns each year. To reach the magic '500' number you have to include 'children' up to forty-four years old. |

"The Supreme Court decision to uphold the ruling of a lower court which struck down a Washington DC law banning handgun ownership as unconstitutional is a bigger set back to American law and public safety than first meets the eye."
"To many Americans the court's actions may make sense because even liberal publications often refer to the Second Amendment as if it speaks simply of a 'right to bear arms.' ... However, until this year, whenever this issue reached the highest court of the land, in cases that span nearly 125 years, the court ruled that there is no constitutional barrier to limiting or removing guns owned by individuals ..." ... |

"Lawyers with the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence and Juneau attorney Mark C. Choate filed a lawsuit today on behalf of the family of Simone Young Kim, who was killed on August 4, 2006, by Jason Coday with a rifle obtained from Juneau gun dealer Rayco Sales."
"The suit alleges that two days before the murder, Rayco negligently supplied Coday with the rifle, even though Coday was a fugitive from justice and a methamphetamine user, and was thus prohibited from buying or possessing guns. The suit was filed in the First Judicial District, in Juneau. At the time of the shooting, Kims murder was the first in six years in Juneau." ... |

"Members of States United to Prevent Gun Violence were profoundly disturbed to learn of the malicious duplicity of a longtime gun violence prevention activist. An investigative article published online on the Mother Jones web site reported that Mary McFate, the legislative director for States United to Prevent Gun Violence, was in actuality a mole for the gun lobby."
"Information received by reporters for the online journal revealed that the person known as Mary McFate is also Mary Lou Sapone, a 'research consultant' who was hired by the NRA. Sapone has a long history of infiltrating animal rights and environmental activist groups as well." ... |

"'One gun a month won't affect crime' ... opposing the state Senate bill limiting firearms purchases to one handgun in any 30-day period, is a model of glib and superficial reasoning." ...
"With no support, the letter said the bill was merely 'feel-good legislation' that would have 'no effect on crime.' This is a statement typical of those more concerned about protecting their selfish privilege of possessing as many handguns as they wish and whatever type of firearm they prefer while giving no thought as to how a moderate limit such as one handgun a month might put a dent in the illegal handgun trade." ... -------

"Funny things, 'laws.'"
"If the fallout from the horrendous Heller decision teaches us anything, it's that we will all eventually have to become criminals in the eyes of the state if we want to protect our property from both private and public molesters."
"Jacob Sullum points out that the District of Criminals Council has unanimously approved a law making in-home handgun ownership impractical, only a month after the Supreme Court supposedly invalidated that very thing."

"Yet that's exactly what the [NRA] is attempting to do by grading members on whether they sign a discharge petition to force a vote on an NRA-backed bill. Given the lobby's clout, the chances are that many lawmakers will give it a serious look."
"The NRA remains ... is wisely seeking to capitalize on its historic Second Amendment victory last month at the Supreme Court. The high court's 5-4 decision that the District of Colombia's handgun ban was unconstitutional gave a shot in the arm to the NRA and gun-rights supporters around the country." ... |

"The governor and his henchmen (your representatives) want to tax your right to self-defense to where many will not be able to afford it anymore. They want to double the fee from $100 to $200 every six years. Firearms are the only consumer product specifically protected under our Constitution in the Bill of Rights under the Second Amendment ..." ...
"To tax (a fee is a tax) our constitutional right to keep and bear arms is an infringement on that right. It becomes a deliberate scheme by politicians to deny your constitutional right by making you pay for it. It is a right already bought and paid for since the time of the American Revolution to the present day, bought by the blood of American soldiers and patriots." ... |

I WOULD LIKE to publicly call on the St. Clair County Board to bring the pro-Second Amendment resolution to the floor for discussion. I would also like all pro-Second Amendment residents of St. Clair County to contact your board representative and urge them to support this resolution.
Eighty-two is now the number of 102 counties in the state that have approved this resolution. We are not Cook County, we are St. Clair County. Protect our rights, and show Springfield and Chicago that you, the board, will stand up for the people that you represent, not the ideals of others.

"Canadian Justice Minister Rob Nicholson announced on July 30th his concern with handgun violence in Canada and promised harsher sentences for those in possession of illegal handguns. While such measures are of course welcome, are the necessary?"
