When the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia struck down the Districts good-reason requirement for concealed carry, it begged the question once more: Where would we be without Heller? District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) was the seminal Supreme Court decision that reaffirmed that the right to keep and bear arms is an individual one, in no way tied to or dependent upon service in the military or militia. In other words, it is a right possessed by each American at birth, and it comes without stipulation or caveat.

We all desire to stay on the right side of the law, but we also know that navigating U.S. gun laws without help is like finding your way through a shopping mall: Treacherous and no fun at all. Unfortunately, attorneys rarely comment without money for copious research, and gun companies dont like to say much for fear of liability. Adding to the National Firearms Acts (NFA) jargon are subjective, case-by-case rulings by ATF officials concerning what constitutes sporting purposes.

Tuesday marks the first day that licensed gun owners can carry concealed on community college campuses in Texas, a year after it became legal to carry on four-year university campuses. The timing is important, because the debate over national concealed carry reciprocity is heating up as opponents in the gun prohibition movement double down with their arguments against leveling the field between criminals, terrorists and their intended victims. Those arguments are questionable at the very least.

Gov. Rick Scott chooses his legal battles the way President Donald Trump selects White House communications directors. Except the ones who ultimately pay the price are Florida taxpayers. The Associated Press reports that since Scott took office in 2011 the state has paid at least $19 million to cover expenses and fees for lawyers who have sued the state. He recently agreed to pay $1.1 million to cover the legal bills of physicians and medical organizations who successfully challenged the infamous "docs vs. Glocks" law that prohibited doctors from talking to their patients about guns.

Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg heads to Washington for the day Thursday, waiting to kick-start a 15-year quest to require personalized smart guns on the shelves of New Jersey gun retailers. Such guns would have technology keeping them from being fired by anyone other than the registered owner or, as envisioned in the case of police officers, the officers and their partners. Current New Jersey law requires them to be exclusively sold in New Jersey once theyre viable which may be unintentionally undercutting their path to the marketplace.

Do you carry a handgun when you are hunting. If so, what is the intended use for a it on your hunting trips? Think about it. There should be a good reason for everything you decide to carry with you. Some people actually like the challenge of hunting with a handgun instead of a more powerful high-powered rifle. It certainly requires getting closer to game and the ability to precisely place the shot.

A national gun-safety group on Tuesday stepped up pressure in New Mexico against proposed U.S. firearms legislation that would make states recognize concealed handgun permits from other states. I try to pay as little attention to Canada as possible, because its Canada. Other than providing American TV shows with a cheaper place to film, Ive never understood the whole point of that country. Their sports are boring, their food is mediocre, and Trailer Park Boys simply isnt very funny. Its as if somebody decided to base an entire nation around the word Whatever. But it would at least be a tolerable place to live if law-abiding Canadian citizens were allowed to defend themselves against people who break into their homes.

It is now legal to carry a gun on all the campuses of the Alamo Colleges district. The signs have been posted, the e-mails have been sent out to the students, and the faculty has been briefed all in preparation for the state law, which went into effect on August 1 at all two-year colleges across Texas. This follows on the footsteps of all state 4 year universities doing the same a year ago. But for some of the students at San Antonio College there is still some apprehension.

When a police force makes the decision to take on a K-9 unit, what it's doing, in reality, is committing to a weapon that requires much more than routine maintenance and an occasional oil change. The Chatham County Sheriff's Office K-9s are full-fledged officers for the force, family members to their handlers, and a potential liability for the entire department.

It began in April. Thats when there appeared on YouTube an NRA recruitment video that raised eyebrows across the political spectrum.
