The Science Behind Why Some Bullets Are More Destructive Than Others

Each year, more than 100,000 Americans are shot. And the wounds to bone and tissue caused by specially designed bullets also are getting more severe according to surgeons.

Not all bullets are created equal. The energy of a bullet is determined by its mass & speed, & its wounding potential hinges on its ability to transfer energy to a target; even rounds that are similar in size, or look similar, can cause dramatically different damage.

In this latest Let's Talk video, we examine four of the most common bullets in America. We explain the physics behind their differences in design, and show why the destruction caused by one round in an AR-15-style weapon can be so much greater than a typical bullet used in target practice or hunting.

Canadian politicians said this would never happen. A murderer shot people on the street and then shot into crowded restaurants in Toronto, Canada. 13 people were wounded. An 18 year old woman and a 10 year old child were killed.

In theory, we were safe from violence because a dedicated murderer would never break Canadian gun laws. That theory fails again and again, but Canadian politicians called for more of the same.

These types of incidents officers mistakenly shooting armed citizens defending themselves from crime happen from time to time, despite efforts by police and gun owners to prevent them. In 2008, Phoenix police shot and injured a homeowner whod cornered an intruder in his home with his handgun. In 2015, an armed South Carolina man was shot and injured by police after he called 911 to report a break-in. In 2016, an Indianapolis man was shot and wounded by police after he reported a carjacking and left his house holding a gun.

Vinci was never arrested or charged with a crime. Two weeks later, a Portland grand jury declined to indict him.

That's because Oregon law says what he did was just fine.

Outside of law enforcement circles, it is little known that Oregon has one of the nation's broadest self-defense laws protecting gun wielders who pull the triggerso long as they claim they did it out of fear.

Senate candidate Beto ORourke openly boasts about his F rating from the NRA, and at the convention he elicited his loudest cheers when he called for universal background checks and an end to the sale of weapons designed to kill people as effectively, as efficiently and in as great a number as possible.

In the 2017 legislative session, House Democrats introduced 17 gun safety bills, though only one passed. The 2018 party platform includes a long list of policy initiatives, including universal background checks, limiting sales of military-style assault weapons and implementing red-flag laws.

Defense Distributed its 3 D gun printing plans are still available on the web if you know where to look. This archive is not secret. I will not say the name of because everyone should know its name. Everyone should know that everything they put on the web has been archived going back to The beginning of most website by this organization. Furthermore, files put on the Internet In the form of torrents are distributed across many peers in a cloud of computers all around the internet in tiny pieces. The torrent file just puts those pieces together.

The article Is the Mouse Gun a Dying Breed? touched briefly on the history of a few types of pocket pistols and current market trends which seem to be moving hastily away from some of the smaller caliber options in favor of larger pistol cartridges. But there wasnt much room left in that piece for gun tests, so I recently staged The Last Great Mouse Gun Race in which three of the pistols mentioned went head-to-head to see how they perform and handle.

Theres an old clich in the gunwriter world that a .22 on you beats a .45 in your truck, and like most clichs, it has a ring of truth to it. Having a gun on you when you need it the most is far, far more preferable than trying to call a time out in the middle of a armed violent encounter, so having a gun, ANY gun puts you way ahead of the game when it matters the most. This is big reason why single-stack 9 mm pistols like the Springfield Armory XD-S Mod.2 have recently become so popular: Because they so lightweight, slim and easy to conceal compared to a full-sized, full-capacity service pistol, they are a much lighter burden to carry compared to a bigger gun.

Print-your-own gun debate ignores how the US government long provided and regulated firearms

My research on the history of the governments intervention in the arms industry suggests a return to its role as guarantor of the gun trade would allow it to do more to reduce gun violence and mass shootings without trampling on the Second Amendment.
Patron of the arms

Before the Second Amendment became the main weapon of gun rights advocates, there was Article 1, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution.

That passage gave Congress the power to support armies and provide arms for the militia. Accordingly, the federal government subsidized and improved arms manufacturing and expanded the market for guns. It also carefully regulated the industry it helped create.

The First Amendment Protects Plans for 3-D Guns

The prospect of ordinary people making guns at home on their 3-D printers seems scary. Even President Donald Trump, a strong Second Amendment supporter, has tweeted that it doesnt seem to make much sense. Attorneys general in eight states and the District of Columbia agreed, and sued to stop the website of Defense Distributed from publishing instructions for printing out plastic firearms. A federal judge recognized the harm Tuesday night and issued a temporary restraining order.

But the attack on freedom of speech is also scary here. Even as he acted to block the gun plans, U.S. District Judge Robert S. Lasnik recognized there are serious First Amendment issues at play.

Local gun rights advocates are calling the temporary order to block downloadable blueprints for 3-D guns ineffective, noting that the plans have already been widely distributed with little-to-no adverse effect.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik in Seattle issued a temporary order blocking downloadable blueprints for 3-D printed guns. Attorneys General from 21 states - including Illinois and Iowa - supported the judge's order to halt the publication of the blueprints.

Wednesday was intended to be the first day that computer-assisted drawing files for polymer-based guns, including an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle, would be posted to DefCad, an online hub for 3D-printed gun schematics. Debate between gun hobbyists and gun violence prevention groups peaked Tuesday afternoon when several state attorneys filed a lawsuit against DefCads parent company, Defense Distributed, the Second Amendment Foundation, the State Department, and other federal agencies that regulate weapons.

The ruling from the three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit will most certainly be overturned by the full 9th Circuit, which in legal terminology is known as en banc (the full court). There are too many far-left judges on the 9th Circuit for this Second Amendment victory to stand. This may seem like a loss, but in the grand scheme of things, it could turn into a major victory at the Supreme Court.

If the en banc 9th Circuit overturns Young, then Alan Beck, the attorney who won Youngs case, will almost certainly petition to the Supreme Court.

That thought could greatly impact whether the family's civil case moves forward. Martin Pohl said that's because in a "stand your ground case, the other side can argue immunity in a civil case as well.

They're starting to come to grips with the reality of this situation which is, this really is up to our lawmakers, and they have to take a look at this, and address this issue because this is the way the courts are interpreting stand your ground, Pohl said.

States began passing stand your ground laws in the mid-2000s. Right now, 24 states have a version of the stand your ground law.

In the complaint, entered July 20 and first reported by the New York Law Journal, the NRA claims it has lost income and access to banking services as a result of the states actions. One of the more dramatic impacts of Cuomos push: The NRA says it has not been able to renew its media liability insurance. If the group cannot secure a policy soon, it could be forced to shutter its multimillion-dollar television network, NRATV, or a number of its print publications, the complaint reads. The NRA also says that, without insurance, it cannot maintain its physical premises or convene off-site meetings and events.

Deputies say after Victor Emanuel Brown, 35, and Jorge Vega-Rosado, 26, got into a fight in the parking lot, Brown pulled out a gun and fired a shot. The bullet missed Vega-Rosado but struck an innocent bystander yards away, outside Liam Fitzpatricks Irish Restaurant.

That innocent bystander, 28-year-old Daniel Strada, was struck in the eye and later died. After Strada was shot, Vega-Rosado got his own gun and fired several times, hitting and killing Brown.

Prosecutors did not charge Vega-Rosado, saying he acted in self-defense and had a valid concealed firearm permit.

Suppose that I were to decide, in celebration of the event, to post each week on social media one of my favorite lines from the novel. Two or three weeks in, Id likely come up with this: Shall we shoot the writer and go home? What recent history teaches us is that the post might well bring the police to my door.

This week the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit reinstated a lawsuit brought by James Ross, who in January 2015 was arrested and held in jail for several days for a Facebook post that well, lets let the court tell the story:

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises reported that the Arctic beast mauled one of four guards it had dispatched to secure a landing for passengers on the shore of Svalbard, Norway. The other three guards tried to shoo the bear away, but eventually had to kill it in self-defense.

Oh, whats that? You want to know if the guard survived? He did, sustaining head injuries and getting airlifted to a hospitalbut come on, thats a mostly irrelevant bit of info, as suggested by the ubiquitous Polar Bear Shot instead of Man Savaged By Wild Brute headlines ricocheting across the media.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed, if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly, you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a small chance of survival. There may even be a worse case: you may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves. Winston Churchill
