So you got an AR! says a gunned-up colleague named Curtis. Were care-workers doing a morning shift in a supported-living facility, and my news puts a spring in his step. Congratulations, Curtis says. Matt, you are becoming American. Gotta assault rifle; all you gotta do now is get fat.

Cheers, mate, I say, wiping down a countertop and thinking how inconceivable this was before I moved to Oregon from Australia, where rampage-esque firearms were outlawed and taken (with compensation) from existing owners way back in 1996.

Curtis, a hell of a great care-worker but not someone I know well, is the chattiest with me hes ever been. Were bonding. So, Matt, he says. Whyd you buy an AR? For shits and giggles?

State gun regulations are a messy patchwork. The Supreme Courts Bruen decision wont help

Indeed, just weeks after many gun laws were upended by Bruen, state governments sought measures to avoid the seemingly-inevitable shift toward more permissive gun policy environments by raising age limits for buying semiautomatic rifles, requiring background checks for ammunition purchases and allowing individuals and local governments to sue irresponsible gunmakers for harm caused by their products.

The Bruen decision, then, may not actually narrow the policy gap between states sharply divided over their approach to regulating guns. Rather, its result may not look very different than what we have today a patchwork of laws that often reflect political and policy demands of individual states.

Trounced: Was Liz Cheneys Gun Control Vote the Final Straw?

Soon-to-be former Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney evidently forgot the wisdom of late House Speaker Thomas P. Tip ONeill, who once famously observed, All politics is local.

She was trounced in the primary by a better than 2-to-1 margin, losing to Harriet Hageman 66.3-28.9 percent. Much of it is blamed on Cheneys vote to impeach former President Donald Trump and then sit as vice chair on the controversial Jan. 6 committee, which conservative commentators liken to a kangaroo court whose ultimate goal is to prevent Trump from running for another term in 2024.

The NYPD unveiled emergency rules Friday that will let people carry concealed weapons in the city.

The Supreme Court ruled that the "proper cause" requirement the NYPD uses to determine if someone is eligible to receive a carry permit is unconstitutional and restricts their Second Amendment right to bear arms.

As CBS2's Alecia Reid reports, in New York, carry permits are getting easier to come by. This comes after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down New York's restrictive handgun laws.

An Ohio Republican state senator introduced gun-control legislation that would require a co-signer for 18- to 21-year-olds to buy any gun other than a single-round rifle or shotgun.

State Sen. Matt Dolan, R-Chagrin Falls, who lost a U.S. Senate primary earlier this year to J.D. Vance, said Senate Bill 357 protects both Second Amendment rights and the public.

We must change the conversation on public safety in Ohio. Citizens are dying here and across our country, and far too many families are enduring unimaginable pain, Dolan said.

Inside a windowless office in a nondescript brick building, a lone man is staring at three computer screens while typing out lines of code.

Hes among a group of developers and coders who aid federal agents responsible for tracking down the owners of guns used in crimes across the United States. But these computer experts use their talents not to modernize the gun shop records that pour into this facility, the National Tracing Center operated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF.

Americas gun industry is currently fixated on selling military-style weapons to consumerssemi-automatic rifles similar to those used by soldiers, and handguns with high-capacity magazines like those carried by police officers. This has coincided with a rise in mass shootings in which dozens of people are killed or wounded in a matter of minutesusually carried out by young men with AR-15-style rifles that they purchased legally.

Sitting inside a classroom at Highsmith Guns in Greenfield, Jason Ware was surrounded by a handgun and several bullets. He was learning how to properly handle the weapon, including how to load and unload the bullets from a trained firearms specialist, Dave Robertson.

Im a first-time handgun owner, Ware said. I got the gun for self defense, plus we have a baby on the way and there are just so many crazy things going on in the world, I dont want to be a victim.

The increase in mass shootings and the passage of the new constitutional carry gun law on July 1 has led to an increase in firearms sales in the county, business owners and officials said.

Massachusetts-based Savage Arms is a well-known and respected player in the rifle world, but some handgunners may not be intimately familiar with the brand. After all, Savage Arms had not released a new handgun since well before World War II. That changed earlier this year when Savage announced the Stance, a micro-compact, striker-fired, polymer-frame handgun designed with concealed carry and personal defense in mind.

This handgun combines many of the features that consumers have come to expect on a carry gun but with characteristic Savage Arms value. Though Savage Arms isnt a brand often associated with concealed carry, the company was actually an innovator in the development of compact and conceal- able handguns.

A homeowner and her son will not be charged for shooting a man who attempted to break into their home on the 3300 block of S. 25th Avenue on Feb. 22. The Hennepin County Attorneys Office says the two will not be charged as they did not have a duty to retreat because they were in their own home.

According to the Minneapolis Police Departments investigation, the 53-year-old homeowner and her 26-year-old son acted in self-defense after Martin L. Johnson attempted to break into their home and then refused to leave the backyard.

Most impressive from Carnos presentation is the rigorous training that volunteer school staff undergo to carry a firearm on campus. Volunteers are already familiar and proficient with firearms. Its not merely on-the-job training, and not everybody fulfills the requirements. The qualification exceeds law enforcement academies training because using those arms could potentially occur around students. Firearm owners who have only taken a concealed carry class are far from being ready to tackle the training.

The training is very difficult, and not everybody passes, and we are okay with that, says Carno.

Uvalde residents, including families of Robb Elementary School shooting victims, have signed and sent a petition against assault weapons to Randy Klein, the owner of Oasis Outback, the local sporting goods store where the gunman retrieved the AR-15 he used to shoot at the school.

ABC News has reached out for comment.

The members of this group feel strongly about our second amendment rights and support your establishments commitment to selling guns and ammunition, the petition reads. However, we come to you today with a request.

As supporters of Beto ORourke, the Democratic candidate for Texas governor, emerged from a crowded campaign event in a quaint, conservative bastion north of Dallas, Treva Sanges was there to protest them.

Murderers! she called out.

Most walked by her, but Abbi Gregory and a friend, who support abortion rights, stopped and engaged Ms. Sanges in a lengthy debate in the late evening sun. The women quickly realized that while they were political opponents, they were also once neighbors.

On July 12, 2022, the Northfield Township board voted unanimously (6-0) to grant a conditional use permit for a private gun range on Leapers ranch to be used for testing firearms optics. The range will be constructed five feet below ground level with a nine-foot berm on either side for most of the proposed 600-yard range. There will be intermediate ranges of 100 and 200 yards. About 300 to 500 shots a day are expected. On commenter at the hearing stated, 85 decibels will be allowed at this site.

The final occupancy permit for the site will require sound testing before being granted.

The Best Folding Shotguns for Survival and Self Defense

Folding shotguns comprise only a small segment of the firearm market. However, they do offer a real advantage for anyone who needs to keep a shotgun handy when space is limited. This platform is ideal for a truck gun or camping trip. Some bush plane pilots rely on folding shotguns, storing them in the cockpit as predator backup when ferrying hunters into the backcountry.

Granted, all action typespumps, auto-loaders, and break-actionscan be disassembled into two pieces. But folding shotguns allow you to skip reassembly, which is no small consideration in an emergency. Heres a look at some notable folding designs past and present.

The en banc panel majority (seven judges) ordered today, in Young v. Hawaii:

The Supreme Court vacated the judgment of this Court, 992 F.3d 765, and has remanded this case to us "for further consideration in light of New York State Rifle & Pistol Assn., Inc. v. Bruen, 597 U.S. ___ (2022)," Young v. Hawaii, 2022 WL 2347578, at *1 (U.S. 2022). We vacate the judgment of the district court and remand this case to the district court for further proceedings pursuant to the Supreme Court order.

Judge Diarmuid O'Scannlain, joined by Judges Consuelo Callahan, Sandra Ikuta, and Ryan Nelson, dissented, arguing that the Ninth Circuit should have resolved the question itself:
