And within that 18- to 24-year-old demographic, the participation rate among females was 16 percent higher than their male counterparts.

A Maryland statute prohibits ownership of assault weapons, the statutory definition of which includes the most popular semi-automatic riflesone bullet per trigger-pull without reloadingin the country, as well as magazines capable of holding more than 10 cartridges (bullets). Stephen Kolbe, a small business owner, among others, sued to overturn the law. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit upheld Marylands ban. |

M'Lynn Miller, 48, is comfortable with a .22-caliber handgun. And, and as she said, is getting better with a 9 mm, too. She has attained the National Rifle Association's distinguished expert level in its first category. The Amarillo Globe-News reports she can't speak for her other female shooters - yet she probably can - but if not for a women's-only group, Miller wouldn't be doing what she's doing. "I don't think so," she said. "I'd have been kind of intimidated. Now, it wouldn't matter, but in the beginning, I wouldn't have done it. There's just something about being all-women that makes you feel comfortable."

When it comes to handguns and their employment, theres a certain amount of overlap between law enforcement, military and private-citizen usage. After all, putting the front sight on the target and controlling the trigger straight to the rear without disturbing it works pretty much the same whether youre wearing MultiCam, blue polyester or jeans. The problem is, because of this basic commonality, the very real gap between the needs of the military, law enforcement and the private citizen is sometimes not recognized. This lack of recognition can manifest itself in a few different ways. |

When a burglar made himself at home in someone elses residence, he found himself in a sticky situation. A New Mexico man, who has a home security system linked to his phone, saw a stranger break into his house. The video showed the intruder trying on clothes and watching television, among other things. The resident came home and enlisted the help of some neighbors, who had two guns. The homeowner parked his car to block automotive exit from his cul-de-sac, and his armed neighbors went to his home. They entered the house and announced they were armed. After telling the perpetrator to get on his knees, they bound his hands and feet with duct tape and waited for the police to arrive. What has become known as The Ladies Pistol Project (LPP)an internal code name assigned to one of the largest examinations by American Rifleman of the burgeoning interest in handguns by womenbegan as a simple question: Are certain models of handguns, regularly purported as female friendly, really that? And what exactly defines that term? If you are reading this, odds are you are a man. At least thats what our demographic data suggests. |

"Radical Islamic Terrorism must be stopped by whatever means necessary! The courts must give us back our protective rights. Have to be tough!" This was President Trump's Twitter reaction to the two terrorist attacks in Catalunya last week. The more deadly attack, which killed 13 and injured 100 people, had taken place Thursday on La Rambla, the pleasant tree-lined pedestrian mall in Barcelona, Spain that tourists flock to and locals enjoy. |

Last weeks announcement by the ACLU that it will no longer defend unpopular speech by heavily armed groups wasnt just a betrayal of its historic mission. The group is a private non-profit organization, so it can choose its cases at will. But Americans trust the ACLU to articulate what the Constitution means, and when it claimed that the First Amendment itself doesnt protect such groups, it betrayed the American people. |

Another bloody weekend in Chicago with nine people reportedly killed and 54 others wounded, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, and instead of calling for more gun control, is it time for the authorities to simply declare martial law in the Windy City and cleaning the thugs out? According to DNA Info.com, more than 430 people have been slain so far this year in Chicago. Thats more than all of the people murdered so far in some states. Indeed, thats more than the combined total of homicides involving firearms in both Washington and Oregon in 2015, the most recent year for which data is available from the FBI Uniform Crime Report. The 2016 report will not be released until next month.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
We'll take one step at a time, and the first is necessarily - given the political realities - very modest. We'll have to start working again to strengthen the law, and then again to strengthen the next law and again and again. Our ultimate goal, total control of handguns, is going to take time. The first problem is to slow down production and sales. Next is to get registration. The final problem is to make possession of all handguns and ammunition (with a few exceptions) totally illegal. Pete Shields, founder of Handgun Control, Inc., New Yorker Magazine, June 26, 1976, pg. 53 |
