Remember two summers ago when most Americans were appalled by the sight of guns openly carried by protesters at presidential speaking events and town hall forums on the health care issue? Now it's not just the protesters bringing guns to political events. Now it may be the candidates themselves.
Texas governor and newly-announced presidential candidate Rick Perry has taken the incendiary mixture of guns and politics to a new level. When it comes to carrying concealed weapons, Perry certainly walks the walk. He has a concealed carry permit and proudly says that he carries a gun when he is out jogging. |

In its never-ending quest to disarm the populace of the American people, the editorial board of the Charleston Gazette today offered this in its lead editorial: Chicago and Toronto are roughly equal in size. Yet Chicago averages 450 gun murders per year, while Toronto has fewer than 60. Why are Chicagoans seven times more violent and deadly than Toronto residents? Maybe its because Canada has sensible gun control laws.

Much of the debate over firearms in the Legislature has been over safety, registration thresholds and most recently, whether or not to mandate microstamping, a controversial idea in which each gun would have a signature imprint on cartridges, which could help police match spent cartridges to specific weapons. Now, however, Assembly Republican Minority Leader Brian Kolb and state Rifle and Pistol Association President Tom King are pointing out that gun makers have a longstanding presence in New York and consequently provide jobs. |

Abbott threatened Jesus Canul, 26, of Logan, with a knife and attempted to rob him, according to Harper.
Sometime during the confrontation, Canul pulled out a firearm and shot Abbott in the head, Harper said.
The confrontation took place right outside the front door of the store, the chief said. Abbott ran into the store after he was shot, and collapsed inside the store, he said.
Emergency personnel were called, but Abbott died on the way to the hospital, Harper said.
"Don't bring a knife to a gun fight," the chief said.
Canul now faces murder charges, he said. He said Canul did have a legal permit to carry the firearm.
Submitter's note: This is a gross injustice in the making. In Florida and many of the states that followed its lead with Castle Doctrine/Stand Your Ground laws over the last 6 years, the police are required to investigate & rule out self-defense before making an arrest--not so here in West Virginia, where our Legislature has yet to act and thus arrest first and investigate & ask questions later remains alive & well. |

Sandra Martinson, 62, retired in November from her career with the county, which spanned more than three decades. The embezzlement is alleged to have occurred for 10 years, ending in October.
Because of Martinsons long employment with Kootenai County, Bonner County Prosecutor Louis Marshall is handling the case. |

Two brothers allege in a lawsuit that they were falsely investigated as bank robbers because a Seattle police officer was upset about the way he had been treated at a popular longshoremen's bar that all three men frequented.
The suit, filed Aug. 8 in King County Superior Court, contends Officer Michael Waters carried out a vendetta against Alan H. Jeffries, a supervising longshoreman at the Port of Seattle, and his brother, Bennie Jeffries IV, a retired longshoreman. |

4. Vigilanteism generally involves conspiracy which means intent outside of any moral self-defense. The Vigilantes were the aggressors, and could not claim self-defense at any time in their reign.
In modern terms, we do not have so-called Vigilantes acting in riots; what we do have is people protecting their community in the absence of law enforcement and we see instigators who grow the riots. Under our system, the people protecting their homes are not taking the law into their own hands, they are the law by dint of public policy and interest among other doctrines and rules. |

They can have a split second to identify whos good and whos the bad guy. It sounds like a technical issue, but its a very real issue. He points out that in the second and a half it can take an officer to draw a weapon, someone from 21 feet away can deliver a mortal blow with a knife or a club. It does give you an idea of how dangerous it is when somebody with a club or a knife is determined to kill you.

Authorities say the video shows the suspect sitting at the bus stop when he was suddenly attacked by several men, including Jackson. The men chased the suspect across the street, that's when police say the suspect used a knife to protect himself.

Perhaps the only good that can come from these terrible events is a reinforced understanding that we as individuals are responsible for our safety and the safety of our families. This means, frankly, that we must safely own and use firearms to deter or prevent criminal assaults on our homes and persons. It is absurd to think police or government agents can protect 310 million Americans around the clock. |

Indiana lawmakers will take on a recent controversial ruling of the Indiana Supreme Court on Wednesday when a study committee debates whether Hoosiers have the right to physically block police from entering their homes.
The issue erupted in May, when the court issued a 3-2 ruling that critics say overturned hundreds of years of common law precedent.
...
Richard L. Barnes was convicted of misdemeanor resisting law enforcement for shoving an officer who tried to enter his home without a warrant. The police were responding to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance. |

Anti-Concealed Carry State Representative Ann Williams will be holding a town hall meeting, together with the state senator for her district, Senate President John Cullerton on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 6:00 PM.
Williams was one of 52 state representatives who voted against HB148 the concealed carry bill.
Williams, formerly a staff member in Lisa Madigans Attorney General office, ran for the Illinois House on a platform including gun control and does not believe that you are responsible for your own self-defense, that is best left up to big government and dicey police response times. |

Green said Seaton was waiting behind the store's trash bin, wearing a mask and carrying a gun when Singh and his mother left the store at 4626 Hanging Moss Road, shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday. He came from behind the Dumpster, pointing a gun demanding money, Green said.
Singh said at first he didn't see the gun.
Once he did, Singh said, he pulled his own weapon and fired five or six rounds.
"You have to have a quick reaction to someone charging toward you with a weapon," Singh said. |

Earlier this month, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reviewed Virginia State Police records and found the number of firearms-related crimes committed in establishments that serve alcohol dropped 5 percent a year after concealed-carry permit holders could legally pack heat while out on the town. There were 145 gun crimes reported in taverns and eateries a year after the law took effect, compared with 153 before. The Times-Dispatch could only identify a single permit holder who had misbehaved, though gun charges later were dropped against that person.
This shouldnt be a surprise to anyone. Gun owners tend to be law-abiding members of their communities. Allowing concealed-carry at the local watering hole did nothing to change that. |

A Sunday morning incident at Seattles Green Lake involving an open carry activist and Seattle police is now escalating on the Open Carry forum with suggestions to take legal action against an unidentified woman who made the initial 911 call to police.
First, a reality check with the King County Prosecutors Office reveals that it is not against the law for a citizen to call 911 with what the citizen honestly believes to be an emergency, i.e. a man walking around with a gun on his hip. Despite the fact that this is legal in Washington State, it can alarm people and even shock them, especially when as Ian Goodhue, spokesman for the Prosecutors office succinctly put it they dont know the law. |

The Senate is set to vote to override Gov. John Lynch's veto of SB 88 on Sept. 7. The Senate bill passed the House by a vote of 283-89 and the Senate by 19-5 both above the two-thirds majority required for an override.
Under existing law, a citizen is justified in using deadly force to defend oneself or another in their home. Existing law also allows citizens to use deadly force in any location against someone who is about to use unlawful deadly force against them or others, or about to commit a kidnapping or sexual assault, provided they cannot retreat from an assailant with complete safety. |

The shooting of an Oconee County man around 8 p.m. Sunday in the 1100 block of Watson Springs Road might have been an act of self defense, according to new details released by authorities Monday.
When deputies arrived on the scene, two boys, 12 and 5 years old, told them James Eric Hester, 32, had been threatening people at the residence and had fired shots into the air, said Chief Deputy Lee Weems of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office. It appeared to deputies that Hester had been drinking, he added. |

Jackson admits that it is absolutely true; she is compensating for something. In fact, she is compensating for a number of things: For her kids who are too small to defend themselves, for being a sedentary middle-aged woman, for wanting a decent back-up plan if luck doesnt work, and for not wanting to be the dead victim of the next murder the local police will be investigating after it happens.
If you believe in gun rights, what are you compensating for?

But Palm Beach County is among a handful of Sunshine State local governments that are resisting the new law. Apparently, county commissioners there believe they -- and they, alone -- have the responsibility to cherry pick through the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights to determine what liberties they can bestow on their subjects.
Under the new state law, Palm Beach County must repeal several county gun ordinances, including bringing guns to a park or child-care facility and shooting a gun east of the 20-mile bend.
...
"What we're doing now is ... having our attorneys look into lawsuits that we may bring against the state and challenge it, and if we have to we'll go to the Supreme Court," Aaronson added. |
