Most now understand that red flag laws violate the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights and many Republicans, including the president, now seem willing to join Democrats, after the recent shootings in El Paso and Dayton by crazed left-and right-wing extremists, to put dents in the Second Amendment hoping these laws might somehow help.
But few realize they also virtually emasculate the Bill of Rights. What follows are the amendments red flag laws damage and how. |

The Supreme Court seems to have interpreted the Second Amendment as a right of every law-abiding citizen to own just about any conceivable firearm or accessory for self-defense, even though the word self-defense doesnt appear in the amendment. This raises a very serious question. Do firearms actually provide self-protection? |

Yesterday the Michigan Court of Appeals handed down a decision in a highly public and very controversial case that gun owners across the United States should applaud. In short, it demonstrates and validates the value of armed self-defense even when you do not pull the trigger and crucially have no cause to pull the trigger. It justifies the brandishing of a gun as pre-emptive measure to block the use of unlawful force.

After Trump reiterated his point to a different audience, Martelle followed up in another column: Yes, of course the person pulls the trigger. Thats how guns work. But if there was no gun in the persons hand, there would be no trigger to pull, a reality the president conveniently omits.
Well, anti-gun advocates often conveniently omit reality as well: guns can save lives as well as take them. Weve seen two recent examples in Polk County. |

Given the mass murders due to gun violence last weekend with 22 in El Paso, Texas, nine in Dayton, Ohio, 11 in Chicago and four in Baltimore; it is easy to see why President Donald Trump would seek a national solution it is a national problem. Still, the Constitution specifically forbids a national solution even a state solution without a new amendment to the Constitution altering the Second Amendment, because self-defense is an individual right, even a God-given right, and not a right from government. |

In a rare move, the Michigan Court of Appeals has reversed the jury conviction of an environmental justice activist sentenced to two years in prison for brandishing a gun during a 2017 altercation in Detroit.
Siwatu-Salama Ra claims she acted in self-defense when she pointed her licensed, unloaded weapon at another woman. Ra, her mother and niece all testified at trial that the woman was enraged, and using her car as a weapon to threaten Ras mother and two-year-old daughter. |
