For the most part, bowhunters are no strangers to firearms. Many of us got our start in the hunting woods with a deer rifle before selecting a bow as our weapon of choice. And Id venture to guess that we make up a good portion of the six percent of Americans who are concealed carry permit holders. |

One of the largest gun advocacy groups in the nation, the Second Amendment Foundation, said they will not defend the presence of firearms at protests, the Washington Times reported this week.
We are not a fan of armed protests and highly discourage that, Alan Gottlieb, founder and executive vice president of the SAF, told the Times. Firearms serve a purpose, and the purpose is not a mouthpiece. Its to defend yourself. If you are carrying it to make a political point, we are not going to support that. |

Those who would allow Hoosiers to carry a loaded handgun without a permit argue that the Indiana Constitution requires it.
Indeed, the wording of Section 32 of the Indiana Bill of Rights is even more clear than the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The people, the state document reads, shall have a right to bear arms, for the defense of themselves and the State. |

Shoppers in Mississippi can save money this weekend on gun and ammunition.
The Second Amendment weekend, taking place Friday through Sunday, exempts guns and ammunition from the state's 7 percent sales tax. Named for the constitutional right to bear arms, the exemption was signed into law by Republican Gov. Phil Bryant in 2014.
Even without a state law, a store in Oxford, Mississippi, is offering a 7 percent discount on books the same three days. |

In respect to Congressman Collins recent Second Amendment Guarantee Act bill, I would like to express my opinion on this legislation. The bill would nullify many aspects of the N.Y. SAFE Act rules governing rifles and shotguns.
Although the 2013 SAFE Act had minimal immediate effect on me, I was appalled at the manner in which it was passed. I dont understand how it was voted on within hours of its introduction. The public and our N.Y. senators and assemblymen had no time to read it. Surely they could not adequately comprehend the 2013 act without reading, discussing and securing comment from the public. They had no opportunity to consult with professionals with detailed knowledge in the area of firearms. |

As to the rally itself and its implications for free speech: The First Amendment does not say your right to speak is removed if you invoke the Second Amendment by carrying a weapon on your person. Nor does the Second Amendment say your right to carry a weapon is removed if you invoke the First Amendment by speaking your mind. |

The first recommendation restricting firearms and other weapons as a condition of allowing large-scale rallies is shaping up as a major focus for official reviews of the Charlottesville violence, one that raises tricky constitutional questions about how the Second Amendment coincides with the First Amendment.
No shots were fired during the rally, but both sides made liberal use of clubs, sticks and tear gas. [Ed.: And guns.] |

A Brookhaven firearms instructor encourages anyone who plans to carry a weapon in public to be aware of the laws and requirements first.
Dustin Bairfield, who is also Lincoln Countys circuit clerk, will be teaching an enhanced carry firearms class Saturday at Primos Hunting.
Several spots are still available.
The whole purpose of the class is not only for you to be safe with the gun but also to have an understanding that would keep you from being in trouble, he said. |

Stephen Yorkman, 48, is president and founder of the Prince Georges County chapter of the National African American Gun Association. He lives in Bowie, Md.
Were you always advocacy-minded?
Growing up, the narrative, especially in the black community, was that guns are a bad thing. I wasnt allowed to have toy guns. What made me want to do something at a social level was the killing of Tamir Rice. Within two seconds his life was just snuffed out. Its the narrative of blacks with firearms. Thats when I started researching. What can I do about this connotation? What you see sometimes, the rap artists with the firearms, okay, but come look at us: other blacks who are doing safety education. |

Professional gun control proponents like Mark Kelly, Michael Bloomberg, Shannon Watts and Dennis Henigan all have something in commonthey lie for a living. Being a military brat who was always taught that the only thing in life that you can truly control is your integrity, this has always been something difficult for me to wrap my arms around. Ive dealt with their lies my entire adult life and I still havent found a way to come to terms with it. |

Other pending legislation would impose new restrictions on Second Amendment rights, weaken North County influence within the San Diego Association of Governments, and chip away at Proposition 13 by lowering the tax increase voting threshold from two-thirds to 55 percent for transportation, affordable housing and library projects. These are just a few of the contentious issues that will be decided over the next month. |

A very successful athlete that operates at a high level does so with the use of a coach.
It is not enough to perform exercises and drills unless someone knowledgeable is pointing out flaws or where improvement is needed.
We regard shooting as an athletic endeavor and recommend everyone who is serious about putting rounds downrange work with a knowledgeable instructor. This is not just true for those who hunt or compete in organized shooting sports, but for those who only train for self-defense as well. |

All he was trying to do was go to work.
In the minutes that ticked by in the 8 a.m. hour on Monday morning, Judge Joseph J. Bruzzese Jr. was walking through the narrow alley in the shadow of the Jefferson County courthouse when a man got out of his car in the nearby bank parking lot and opened fire.
Police say Bruzzese returned fire, and a nearby officer stepped in and ultimately killed the suspect. Another man who was with the attacker, sitting in the car with him, was taken into custody. |

The District of Columbia has filed an appeal with the U.S. District Court of Appeals requesting an en banc hearing in a case recently won by the Second Amendment Foundation that struck down the "good reason" requirement for obtaining a concealed carry permit.
The case is Wrenn v. District of Columbia.
"The Second Amendment Foundation expected the City of Washington, DC to file this appeal in an attempt to try to overturn our court victory that said their virtual ban on the right to carry a firearm for self-protection was unconstitutional," said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. |
