"Rep. John Hostettler has received a 60-day suspended sentence for carrying a loaded gun in a Kentucky airport earlier this year. The five-term congressman from Indiana's 8th District will not spend time in jail unless he violates the terms of his plea agreement."

"Hostettler, a Republican, relinquished the Glock 9mm handgun that was discovered by airport security workers when the congressman was preparing to board a flight to Washington, D.C., on April 20."

"But she remembered a valuable lesson she learned through the Eddie Eagle Firearm Safety Program: 'Stop, don't touch, move out of the area and tell an adult.'"

"The three contiguous states of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah have the largest number of 'post-ban' copycat assault weapon manufacturers of any region of the United States, the Violence Policy Center revealed today."

"The region contains 10 assault weapon manufacturers (see chart below) with a combined product line that includes post-ban AR-15s, AK-47s, UZIs, and others. The product lines of these 10 companieslocated in a region the VPC has labeled the 'UZI Triangle'are yet another example of how the gun industry has successfully evaded the current federal ban by making insignificant, mostly cosmetic, changes in the design of banned assault weapons and then marketing them as 'post-ban' guns. ..." ...

Well, yeah. When you ban certain "insignificant, mostly cosmetic" features, manufacturers will change those features. BTW, when you make changes required by a law it is called "complying" with the law, not "evading" it.

"Ceasefire NJ, the statewide coalition of groups and individuals devoted to reducing gun violence, hosted a State House press conference focusing on the strong support among the state's law enforcers for renewing and strengthening the federal Assault Weapons Ban, due to expire on September 13, if the Congress and President do not act. 160 NJ Chiefs and Sheriffs have, to date, signified in writing support for enactment of a stronger Assault Weapons Ban, as part of an ongoing national effort to demonstrate law enforcement support. "A homeowner in Sunset Hills fatally shot an intruder who pushed his way into the house and used a "stun gun," police said. It happened about 6 a.m. Wednesday in the 12600 block of Old Gravois Road, at a relatively-isolated house surrounded by trees."

"Police said the owner retrieved a small-caliber handgun before answering a knock on his back door. A man standing outside asked for gasoline and then forced his way in, shocking the resident with an electric stun gun, investigators were told. The owner fired one shot into the chest of the intruder, who turned and ran about 200 yards before falling dead." ...

"Gun owners who feel that sometimes having only 10 rounds in their weapons is just not enough--maybe they're poor shots or have a lot of enemies--should take heart. Come September 13, the federal 'assault weapon ban' is set to expire unless Congress acts to extend it."

"The law, which prohibited the production and sale of 19 kinds of specific guns, outlawed the sale of detachable magazines that hold more than 10 rounds and loosely restricted certain features such as bayonet lugs and flash suppressors, was passed in 1994 with a built-in 10-year expiration date. President Bush says he supports renewing it, but gun-control advocates complain that the White House has done little to push Congress to pass an extension." ...

"Late today, after hearing three hours of public testimony, the Maryland General Assembly's Joint Committee on Administrative, Executive, and Legislative Review voted 12 to 7 to reject a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) proposal to hunt black bears for the first time in more than half a century. The bear hunt is scheduled to begin in October, and Governor Robert Ehrlich now must decide whether to respect the decision of the committee, which has jurisdiction over state agency regulations, or to push forward with the trophy hunt." ...

So the question is, who do you listen to? The scientists who studied the problems and came up with a proposed solution? Or the politicians who grandstanded through three whole hours of testimony before voting against the proposal?

"Gun control is now an issue in the race for the U.S. Senate. Republican candidate Alan Keyes said this afternoon that Barack Obama-- his democratic opponent -- wants to make America safer for criminals instead of the average American."

"Barak Obama is on vacation this week but the campaign goes on. His no vote in the state senate in May on a controversial gun owner's rights bill is drawing heavy fire today from Alan keys who says gun ownership is a right guaranteed by the constitution. Guns are no more dangerous than cars and America would probably be safer if more people walked around carrying Uzis like they do in Israel."

"Keyes dismissed the notion that residents, rather than arm themselves, should rely on authorities to protect them." ...

"Declaring 'the front line of the war against terror once again involves the citizens,' Republican Alan Keyes said Tuesday he believes the U.S. Constitution grants properly trained private individuals the right to own and carry machine guns."

"'You're not talking about giving citizens access to atom bombs and other things,' the former presidential candidate said. 'That's ridiculous.'"

"But the GOP nominee for U.S. Senate argued the founding fathers intended the Second Amendment to allow people to carry the types of weapons 'customarily carried in those days by ordinary infantry soldiers.'"

"Gun manufacturers are eagerly ratcheting up their military assault weapons production lines as they count down the final days of the ten-year-old Federal Assault Weapons Ban. Congress is scheduled to be in session for a mere four days before the Ban expires on September 13. Soon after, these deadly killing machines will be back in business on the streets of America, just as our children are returning to school." ...

"Since 1994, the year the Ban went into effect, child and teen deaths from firearms have dropped 50 percent. Overall, gun deaths have dropped nearly 25 percent. Child and teen death rates from firearms had increased every year from 1979 through 1994 and have decreased each and every year since 1994. Crime gun traces involving assault weapons have dropped 79 percent since 1994." ...
-------

Oooooh, nice bait and switch! Talk about "assault weapons" and then bring up overall gun deaths, avoiding mentioning the steadily increasing (4.5 million per year) number of privately owned guns. As for the gun traces, both the Congressional Research Office and the BATFE have said that traces are completely divorced from gun use in crimes.

"The 1994 federal ban on so-called "assault weapons" expires Sept. 13, and gun prohibitionists like Nicholas D. The gun banners hope to generate enough political pressure on President Bush and Congress to have the Clinton-Feinstein measure renewed and expanded." ...

"The impending demise of the national ban is, however, small comfort for local gun owners. Its California predecessor, the Roberti-Roos semiauto ban, is still in effect. "A federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit claiming six federal agents used excessive force in an armed raid to seize Elian Gonzalez at the home of his Miami relatives four years ago."

"The 14-page order issued Monday by U.S. District Judge Marcia Cooke concluded the agents who conducted the raid were legally immune to the lawsuit, and she found no constitutional violations."

"'We are shocked and disappointed by the court's decision,' Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, said in a statement Wednesday. "Some people think that the Second Amendment is an outdated relic of an earlier time. Doubtless some also think that constitutional protections of other rights are outdated relics of earlier times. We The People own those rights regardless, unless and until We The People repeal them. For those who believe it to be outdated, the Second Amendment provides a good test of whether their allegiance is really to the Constitution of the United States, or only to their preferences in public policies and audiences. The Constitution is law, not vague aspirations, and we are obligated to protect, defend, and apply it. If the Second Amendment were truly an outdated relic, the Constitution provides a method for repeal. The Constitution does not furnish the federal courts with an eraser." --9th Circuit Court Judge Andrew Kleinfeld, dissenting opinion in which the court refused to rehear the case while citing deeply flawed anti-Second Amendment nonsense (Nordyke v. King; opinion filed April 5, 2004)
