Californias liberal lawmakers failed in their efforts to outlaw assault rifles, so they now focus their attention on outlawing distinctive features of AR-15s, but creative gun-owners have once again found ways around their legislation.

Earlier laws meant to crack down on detachable magazines were circumvented by the invention of the bullet button, which uses a special tool to release magazines.

Anti-gunners are reportedly furious about a recent field trip to a Woodstock, Ga., gun range by youngsters from a local private school, but the gun range owner is defending the trip, according to WSB-TV in Atlanta. The controversy ignited after images of youngsters handling firearms appeared on Facebook, the station reported. The station quoted Tammy Dorsten, owner of the Holdheide Academy in Woodstock, who said parents had approved the hands-on lesson that correlated with lessons about Annie Oakley and Davy Crockett, two American folk heroes. Apparently, only two students actually made the trip, and contrary to some reports, they were not pre-schoolers, but first and second-graders.

Our minions have completed their exploration of the NRA Carry Guard Expo. As we observed in Part 1, theres a bunch going on between widely varied vendors and well over 100 seminars and training sessions. Any illusions of remotely covering it all are long gone, but we do have a few more nuggets. John Brownings .380 ACP has long been derided for defensive use along bigger is better lines, particularly among American shooters. With access to the .45 ACPanother Browning inventiontheres no real mystery as to why. Modern doctrine and bullet architecture have moderated .45ness to some extent, but relatively deep suspicions toward JMBs shorty 9 mm remain.

Gun buy backs (more appropriately termed turn-ins) are a misguided and ineffective tactic for combating violent crime, and those that continue to champion them accomplish little more than revealing their own ignorance. With no expectations that turn-ins will affect crime, the very least the organizers of these anti-gun rituals should be expected to do is to follow the law and not actively harm public safety. Recent reports from Savannah, Ga. suggest that turn-in organizers in that city may have been unable to meet these most basic criteria.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms....The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. Thomas Jefferson in a letter to William S. Smith in 1787. Taken from Jefferson, On Democracy p. 20, S. Padover ed., 1939
