"Lawmakers serving on the House-Senate panel probing pre-Sept. 11 intelligence breakdowns have been asked to submit to lie-detector tests to learn the source of a leak, according to reports Friday."
" 'Lie-detector tests are a standard element of FBI investigations and they are meant to eliminate people from suspicion,' an official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. 'They are always voluntary.' "
KABA NOTE: When those who refuse to submit to these "tests" come under greater scrutiny and deal with accusations of "having something to hide", perhaps they will begin to pay closer attention to rights violations -- maybe a few will even begin to understand why the only way a patriot will give up his/her guns is bullets first. |

"Alice Russell's granddaughter roused her from bed at 9 a.m. Wednesday, shouting, 'Nana, something terrible's happening, the police are all here.' And it wasn't just the police." "More than 50 fire inspectors, animal control officers, social service workers, cleanup workers, even U.S. marshals rumbled into a West Side neighborhood Wednesday morning for the second Clean Sweep, a citywide initiative to crack down on quality-of-life problems."
"While cleanup crews mowed lawns and cleaned vacant lots, teams of officials went door to door, checking houses for working smoke detectors, unlicensed dogs, illegal cable television hookups and social services concerns. Organizers of Wednesday's effort said they installed 40 smoke detectors, replaced batteries in 30 others, issued 15 summons for unlicensed dogs, uncovered 20 illegal cable hookups and made more than a dozen referrals to social services and housing agencies." |

"For the second time in a month, a Durham judge has thrown out a search conducted by the Durham Police Department. The rulings have the department re-evaluating its procedures."
"When neighbors complain about illegal activities, Durham police often go door-to-door looking for the problem."
" 'So when the complaint comes in, it's our job to come out,' said Lawrence Campbell, public defender." "Called 'knock and talks,' the practice is commonly used by police in what are considered to be problem areas. There are no search warrants involved. Officers simply knock on doors, talk to residents and ask to be let inside to search the home."

Here we have another "self defense" report from a television station:
"Recent abductions of girls across the country has sparked renewed concern over personal safety. KATU's Corinna Allen spoke with some teens today who are taking action to reclaim their safety and maximize their chances of escaping an attack."
They go on to list a few ways to help in the event of being attacked. And some of the tips make sense -- but they've failed, as usual, to mention the most effective, most efficient, most affordable, easiest to carry and use form of self-defense ever devised: the handgun. And this report was aired on an Oregon news station, where open carry is legal and a concealed carry permit is relatively easy for a lawful, peaceable person to obtain.
The operative phrase: negligent reporting. |

"It requires commitment and hard work, but a group of Colaradans has proven that a state political-action committee, or PAC, can be a formidable tool for reducing gun violence. Formed in 2000 to fund the campaigns of Colorado legislative candidates who said they favored stronger gun laws, Colorado Ceasefire is gearing up for this fall's elections intent on exceeding their debut fund-raising efforts and maintaining a strong defense against the gun lobby."
KABA NOTE: If you are realize that "gun violence prevention," to liberty's enemies, means "making it harder for lawful people to keep and bear arms", ... you're not alone. Were that same bankrupt mindset applied to the prevention of unwanted pregnancies, all females from puberty onward would wear satellite-monitored chastity belts, and those who engaged in unauthorized sex would be subject to federal prosecution. Prior restraint is prior restraint, and there's no Constitutional authority for it. |

"A 19-year-old man acted in self-defense when he killed one man and wounded a second during a drug-related shootout in northwest Rochester, a jury said Wednesday."
"Monroe County Court jurors acquitted Christen Dowdell of second-degree murder, second-degree assault and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in the Jan. 30 death of Timothy M. Fruster and wounding of Prince Trotter."
"But jurors convicted Dowdell of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor, because Dowdell admitted on the witness stand that he illegally possessed a 9mm pistol used in the shooting, said his lawyer, Joseph S. Damelio."
KABA NOTE: Some people who call themselves liberty advocates would frown on this self-defending shooter because his case involved one of the handful of drugs from which the federal government doesn't overtly and directly profit. We pose the following questions to such a naysayer:
1) Does someone who chooses to put something into his own body that the government doesn't like have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? A right to self-defense? If not, which clause in the Constitution validates such a wholesale stripping of basic rights?
2) When your firearm is banned like a handful of drugs are banned and you are demonized as a criminal for mere possession, would you like to be hated by people who call themselves liberty advocates? |

"The Lincolnshire Echo has started a campaign to Ban Replica Guns following an increase in armed incidents in the county over the past five years."
"In 1997-98, the county police's armed response unit was called out to 29 incidents, with this figure rising to 486 in 2001-02. In the first four months of this year, the unit has been out 260 times."
"More than half of these incidents involved replica guns and after a Lincolnshire Echo reporter purchased a fake firearm for 30 from a local toy shop, the paper is now calling for replicas to be banned."
"The ballbearing replica gun bought by the reporter even carried the warning: 'Please bear in mind that because your replica weapon is so realistic, running about in a public place or having them to hand in a public place or displaying them in an anti-social way could well precipitate a very dangerous situation with the armed police.' "
"Echo reporter Ben Rooth, who is leading the campaign, said: 'Since April 1 there have already been 260 incidents of gun crime.' "
" 'It is escalating out of all control and speaking to workers of the armed response unit, it appears that between 50-80 per cent [of crimes] involve a replica gun. It made total sense to campaign for a ban.' "

"They said 87 real guns were handed in by members of the public and only 13 replicas or imitations."
"The cache of dangerous weapons included 32 shotguns, most of which were 12-bore shotguns or .410 garden guns, 29 air rifles and 19 air pistols which were either .22 or .177 air rifles. A mini shotgun and an 8mm revolver were also taken and destroyed by police."

An Oregon anti-gun reporter uses the fact that a gubernatorial candidate in Alaska carries a firearm to make fun of basic rights and those who exercise them: ------- " 'I need something compact,' Ulmer told the newspaper, after checking out some hardware in a Yukon Valley gunshop. "In 1921, the federal Sheppard-Towner Maternity Act created the birth 'registration' or what we now know as the 'birth certificate.'
