"Two years ago today, New Orleans and the surrounding area was pounded by Hurricane Katrina, and in the following days, police and National Guard units, acting under orders that violated both the federal and Louisiana state constitutions, illegally seized without warrant or probable cause, hundreds of privately-owned firearms."

"According to a warrant, the former officer, Jeffrey Scott Copeland, 36, of Greenville, responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle. He's accused of taking a Glenfield .22. caliber rifle with a sawed off barrel and two knives from the vehicle's occupant."

The Northern Colorado Friends of the National Rifle Association will host its annual banquet and fundraiser starting at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 6.

A prime rib dinner, silent auction and drawing will be some of the highlights at the banquet in the University of Northern Colorado ballrooms.

Tickets are $35 and can be purchased by stopping by Offen Ace Hardware, 1722 9th St. and William Moore Jewlers, 914 9th Ave. or calling 353-8200 or 378-0803.

Money raised goes in part toward supporting outdoor youth groups in northern Colorado.
