So far the courts have limited guns mostly to the home. But the National Rifle Assn. is asking the Supreme Court to clarify that the right extends further.

The 2nd Amendment's "right to keep and bear arms" is proving to be a right to keep a gun at home, but so far not a right to bear a loaded firearm in public.

The Supreme Court breathed new life into the amendment when it struck down strict handgun bans in Washington and Chicago and spoke of the "inherent right of self-defense."

Garrett has not been charged, although MPD spokesman Kyle Evans said a criminal investigation is under way.

The Blue Water Bridge linking Sarnia and Port Huron often is used as a shortcut by U.S. residents to the eastern states. Bail money routinely is forfeited to the Crown when those charged fail to return to Canadian court to deal with charges.

A bail hearing has yet to be held for a fourth person charged at the bridge with gun offenses in the past month.

Not every gun seizure by Canada Border Services Agency officers results in criminal charges. If criminal charges are not warranted due to the circumstances, civil action can be taken under the Customs Act.

CINCINNATI (AP) Shootings by police at suspects have increased sharply in Cincinnati, including three over a five-day span.

The increase comes at a time when City Council members are being asked to consider proposed budget cuts that could include more than 40 police officer layoffs.

So far, there have been nine "officer-involved" shootings those in which officers fire guns this year, compared with two last year and six for 2009, The Cincinnati Enquirer (http://bit.ly/pSleOi) reported Wednesday. There are normally four to six officer-involved shootings in Cincinnati during a year, police Lt. Col Vince Demasi told the newspaper.

Police contend he was aiming for revenge. His jewelry had been stolen, and he had to show how hard he was and put a cap in the dude, or whatever the lingo is nowadays.

It was not long ago that the NBA figured to have dodged a bullet with Crittenton. His locker room standoff with Gilbert Arenas, after Arenas had displayed all manner of weaponry in front of his locker with a sign that said "pick one," wound up with both players suspended but tragedy avoided.

The man then heard someone running up his driveway. He got a pistol from his glove box and started to get out of his vehicle just as he was met by two suspects, who he told deputies were also armed and demanding money.

"It was all probably a second," the man said Monday. "It was just so fast."

Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office Lt. Tony Ivey said the homeowner was acting in self-defense when he fatally shot John Christopher Fowler, 28, of 572 Nature Walk Way, according to a written statement from the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.

Floridas self-defense law could be tested in the case of a former Palmetto Ridge High School student accused of fatally stabbing a classmate.

Donald Day, the lawyer for 15-year-old Jorge Saavedra, is expected to file a motion Tuesday claiming Saavedra is protected against prosecution on a manslaughter charge by the states Stand Your Ground law. Saavedra is charged as a juvenile in the stabbing death of Dylan Nuno, 16, at a Golden Gate bus stop in January.

It was a group of kids chasing him down the street, attacking him and beating him, Day said.

The veto of Senate Bill 88 should be overridden by the Legislature. This castle doctrine legislation does not and would not allow criminals to use a firearm (probably already obtained illegally) in an illegal act, such as shooting another gang member to use this legislation as a means to escape justice.

If we place ourselves in the shoes of Thursday's victim, alone in an alley and staring down the barrel of a pistol held in the clenched fist of a threatening maniac, we are faced with an inescapable truth: As individuals, we are responsible for our own safety - and this responsibility exists in a world where the predators are armed no matter what laws we try to pass.

The lawfully concealed firearm represents a tremendous asset in the hands of a licensed citizen who has undergone the training our state requires. To the uninitiated, it may seem extreme, but such misconceptions are the product of an information vacuum filled by social biases and unfounded fears.

Summer is over and its back to school time again, and I am taking a page from the famous Staples commercial that is set to the tune Its the most wonderful time of the year.

Even though these lists of favorite things usually come out before the holiday season to offer gift ideas for those hard to buy for people, or really cool stuff you want for yourself, I get set for the year ahead as school gets started in September, and I cant start my year without my favorite things.

Logan Circuit Judge Roger Perry approved a $40,000 property or 10 percent cash bond for Jesus Canul at a hearing Monday.

An assistant circuit clerk said she heard a group of people was pooling money to meet the $4,000 cash option. She said authorities would conduct a home study before releasing Canul.

Canul is accused of killing David Abbot with a single gunshot to the head at the Logan Walmart on Aug. 22.

Abbot watched Canul cash a check inside the store and followed him outside, where he put a knife to Canul's throat and took his wallet. Canul, who has a concealed weapons permit, shot Abbott in the back of the head as he was trying to flee, police said.

Self-Defense Against a Violent Flash Mob

Lets define our terms. Flash mob is a politically correct term for riot. The objective of the rioters is to hurt people. Whether the rioters are drunk, mean, evil, politically motivated, disenfranchised, or whatever, is irrelevant. They are violent criminal actors, or VCAs. If you are unlucky enough to be caught in their path, they are threatening your life and limb. It is like being a Jew caught in the path of Nazi Storm Troopers in pre-World War II Germany. So, lets get our meaning straight. There is nothing cute or politically correct about a violent flash mob. So, be aware.

I am a pro-Second Amendment type of person. With our new handgun law reform, the Legislature has given us pro-carry people enough rope to hang ourselves with, which is a dangerous thing as there are some (although very few) in this group who are going to abuse the privilege.

As a whole, the registered gun-owning community is a low-crime group with everything right down to traffic tickets being lower than with other law-abiding people.

Amid rising concerns that private gun ownership rights could be compromised, or even eliminated, the National Rifle Association is staging its annual Friends of NRA dinner Sept. 15 in Beckley.

No speakers are lined up for the event at Black Knight Country Club, but the banquet will feature live and silent auctions, and drawings for merchandise, says Dr. Terry Kourey, chairman of the Southern West Virginia Friends of NRA.

The NRA, which boasts a national membership in excess of 4 million, has 1,103 members in Raleigh County, and 31,662 across West Virginia.

I kind of feel like a broken record on this, but it would seem as if a certain cadre of gun owners and second amendment advocates are unable to be convinced that a proposed UN Arms Trade Treaty has nothing at all to do with their own ability to bear guns. Chuck Norris pens the latest iteration of this paranoid view in the Politico. (Seriously, Politico?)

Trusting Your Gut and Staying Alive

Self-defense is more than just carrying a firearm, a stun gun, being a black belt or carrying mace. It starts with trusting your gut.

Have you ever had that feeling in the pit of your stomach, that feeling deep down in your gut that tells you something just doesnt feel right? Have you ever ignored that feeling only to regret your decision later to learn that your gut instinct was in fact, right?

Of course you have, probably many times. You have also probably told yourself that you are going to start trusting that feeling more often only to make the same mistake over and over to be reminded almost every time that you should have trusted your gut in the first place.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
When Pa was at home the gun always lay across those two wooden hooks above the door. ... The gun was always loaded, and always above the door so that Pa could get it quickly and easily, any time he needed a gun. Laura Ingalls Wilder
