Border Patrol spokesman Omar Zamora said agents had been chasing a group of immigrants east of Brownsville Friday afternoon when an agent saw a man holding a gun near the Rio Grande. The agent fired four shots, but did not hit the man. The man then dropped his gun and identified himself as a member of a militia. Zamora said no other details were immediately available.

... Two decades after Congress authorized the Department of Defense to supply military equipment to local, state and federal agencies for law enforcement activities, police departments find themselves saddled with an array of outdated military hardware and accused of becoming militarized. ...
A Washington Times investigation found a number of departments complaining about the heavy armored vehicles that have been transferred, finding them to be overkill for the jobs local law enforcement needs to do. But despite those hiccups, departments say theyre thrilled with the program as a whole, particularly because of the weapons that the officers and deputies say put them on even footing with the residents they are trying to protect.

For those of us whove been raising alarms about both the jihadist threat and the national-security vulnerability created by the Obama administrations non-enforcement of the immigration laws, this is not a surprise particularly less than two weeks before September 11. But it is nonetheless jarring to read. Judicial Watch has just put out this statement:

Yes, this is said somewhat in jest but only somewhat.
By now I think most of us have had a chance to read the story and see the video of the 9-year-old New Jersey girl who was given a Mini Uzi submachine gun* by the employee of an Arizona tourist attraction.
The ensuing string of negligence/incompetence/recklessness left the employee dead, and turned the girl an accidental killer who will likely suffer significant psychological trauma as a result of the incident.

An Oklahoma police officer was arrested for lewd acts with a child.
Officials say officer Sean Floyd was arrested at the Vinita Police Department for multiple counts of lewd molestation with a child under the age 16.
Floyds arrest comes after the Craig County Sheriffs Office requested the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation investigate allegations Floyd was having sexual contact with a girl under 16 years old.
Although the investigation remains open, OSBI agents believe only one victim is involved.

The New York Police Department said Friday it's under investigation for a second restraint-related death, this one involving a drugged, emotionally disturbed man four days before a fatal videotaped chokehold that fueled community outcry and led the department to overhaul its use-of-force training.
The medical examiner's office cited "physical restrain by police" as a factor in the July 13 death of Ronald Singleton, who went into cardiac arrest in an ambulance and died on the way to a hospital. It ruled his death a homicide.
The police department is cooperating with the Manhattan district attorney's office, which is leading the investigation into Singleton's death, a police spokesman said.

In the Old West, the handgun, shotgun and rifle were important tools for self-defense and survival. Being proficient with a weapon was important. Being proficient with a weapon while riding a horse was even better.

On Thursday at the Nebraska State Fair, modern-day cowboys, some of the best riders and shooters in the state, gathered for a cowboy mounted shooting demonstration and competition at Thompson Arena.

The laws' notion of what constitutes self-defense can be fairly expansive, so we wondered: What if the officer who shot Gaynier was just another civilian, not an officer? The answer, it seems, is it doesn't matter.

About 80 people die by gunshot in the United States every day, but most of those incidents dont register even a blip in the national media. Whats different about the accidental death Monday of a firearms instructor at a gun range in Arizonashot by a nine-year-old girl who lost control of an Uzi submachine gunis that it was so obviously preventable. Could this change the way we think about gun safety for children?

The Columbia Basin Badger Club hosted a panel discussion Friday for Gun Initiatives 591 and 594.

Both sides of the initiatives informed the public about the changes each initiative would make to the current gun laws Washington.

Initiative 591 would stop the government from confiscating guns or other firearms from citizens without a due process. It would not require background checks unless there was a uniform national standard in place.

Castle Rocks recent special election, one which was riddled with conflict and lawsuits, had its results certified today. Both initiatives have passed, thus removing the ban on open carry on town property, limiting the power of the town manager and putting decisions on future second amendment restrictions into the hands of the citizens.

The Colorado Second Amendment Association (C2AA), formed by members of the Basic Freedom Defense Fund which recalled Senator John Morse in 2013, is proud to have provided assistance in this effort through its Issue Committee, Freedom for Castle Rock (FFCR).

A bill allowing family members to ask a judge to order firearms removed from people likely to commit gun violence was sent to California Governor Jerry Brown on Friday for signing into law.

The bill, one of several gun control measures up for votes in the last week of the state's legislative session, was introduced after police near Santa Barbara said they were unable to confiscate weapons from a man who later went on a rampage and killed six people, despite concern from his family that he was in poor mental health and might become violent.

Unlike blacks in other Southern communities, they adopted self-defense tactics, Hill said. Robert Hicks started the Bogalusa chapter of the Deacons for Defense and Justice, a group of armed blacks who defended visiting civil rights workers.

"This movement started understanding right away that it had to engage in self defense,' said Hill, a Bogalusa native who has written extensively about the movement there. "It knew it was dealing with this violence from whites... And while it engaged in nonviolent ballot activity marches and picketing and those sorts of things it never assumed itself to be a nonviolent movement.'

Gun rights advocate and CEO of Ares Armor Dimitri Karras says although the bill was created with the best of intentions, he believes its unconstitutional.

Having law enforcement show up and strip you of your rights simply because of an allegation is a huge violation of the second amendment, he said. It will be challenged, it will be struck down it is unconstitutional and that's going to be the end of it.

Californias gun-control proponents have suffered another setback. A federal judge, Anthony Ishii, has ruled that the state cannot force gun buyers to wait for a 10-day period to pick up weapons they purchased if they already own a gun or have a license to own a handgun.

The judge said that the 10-day waiting period for firearm owners unduly restricts their constitutional rights, and that such a measure is not justified by safety concerns. He pointed out that all gun purchasers, no matter how many firearms they already own, must pass a state background check of their mental-health and criminal records, which makes another full waiting period unreasonable.
