The Modular Handgun System (MHS) competition began way back in 2015, but it feels like it was last week. The Beretta M9 served for over 30 years as Americas sidearm, but many of the guns were ending their service life. As such, the military could order more M9s, or it could begin looking at a new handgun. As we know, they chose the latter, and the SIG P320 won and became the M17 and M18 pistols. However, Beretta tried one last Hail Mary to keep the M9 in armories with the M9A3.

Feeding deer is a common practice in Mississippi as hunters try to keep them fat and happy as well as improve the odds of seeing them. Mississippi State University shows it can have unintended consequences, including fewer deer observations and death for some wildlife.

Regarding Anthony Gills op-ed Economists Explain the Taliban (Aug. 26): A few weeks ago (although it seems like years), President Biden mocked Second Amendment supporters who maintain that the right to bear arms is necessary to mitigate government overreach. Mr. Biden remarked that anyone resisting the government would need jets and nuclear weaponsotherwise, he implied, they were doomed to fail in the face of a hypothetical government onslaught. But history has taught us over and over again that a determined foe can outlast a technologically superior force through sheer human will, and often with terror.

I have an older Thompson/Center New Englander muzzleloader that I purchased used. It was corroded from improper cleaning. I have cold-blued the barrel and it shoots well. However, I shoot it infrequently. When cleaned with soapy water and stored with natural lubes, the bore begins to rust. I am aware of complications of using petroleum products in the bores of blackpowder guns. Is there a cleaning/storage method you would recommend?

Smith & Wesson's large N-frame revolvers are a favorite among handgun hunters, competitive shooters, and classic wheel gun enthusiasts. With a basis in the old school circa 1908 Hand Ejector First Model "New Century" double-action revolver, the first handgun chambered in .44 S&W Special, this early S-frame morphed during World War I into the Model 1917, chambered in .45 ACP, and a series of similarly beefy descendants such as the Model 27 the world's first .357 Magnum and, the subject of our tale, the hand-filling Model 29.

The air is hot and humid. Crickets sing in a pace so rapid their chirps meld into a monotonous trill. The forest is verdant with lush, green foliage. It sounds and feels like a late summer day, but the fall hunting season has begun.

First developed and used in England in the 1870s, the .410 bore remained a specialty cartridge and was not widely adopted for a long time. Some shooters felt it was novelty-only, but others found it to be great for hunting and competition shooting.

The question of personal freedom vs. government control has been hotly debated recently, thanks in part to gun control legislation and the COVID-19 pandemic, among other topics. Two local men believe that debate has long been settled, and now theyre setting about codifying it. Gary Shawver, of Wadena, and Mike La Coste, of Waverly, appeared before the Bremer County Board of Supervisors last week to ask it to consider declaring Bremer a constitutional county.

In 2002, I was doing a fair amount of pest shooting on a couple of ranches onto which I had access. Hornady announced at the SHOT Show that year it was bringing out a hotshot, .17-caliber rimfire round for just such tasks. I recall first shooting the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire cartridge in a bitterly cold gale of a windstorm at the range day before the show. Predictably, it was nothing more than a noisemaker in that gale since the wind simply ripped the tiny 20-grain bullets from their intended paths and flung them to who knows where. Nonetheless, the idea intrigued me, but like a lot of things, I put off getting a rifle for it.

NRAs Institute for Legislative Action (ILA) was created in 1975, then saved and strengthened by NRA members in the 1977 Annual Meeting, in the Revolt at Cincinnati. According to the gun-prohibition lobby, the NRA had been an apolitical organization that suddenly grew radical in the 1970s. Actually, the developments in the 1970s fortified NRAs longstanding tradition of active defense of the right to keep and bear arms.

Most reporters are very sympathetic to gun-control agendas and will skew or lie outright about facts to promote them. DENNIS CAUCHON, USA TODAY
