... "Editor, Times-Dispatch: The anti-gun letter from Allan Ross totally disregards a couple of things."
"First, there are an estimated 2 million to 3 million yearly uses of firearms to prevent or stop crimes. If all firearms are locked up as he would like, they would not be available for self-protection. A very important, recent U.S. Supreme Court decision ruled that police do not have an obligation to protect citizens."
"Ross seems to assume criminals will follow the new laws he proposes -- ones that would essentially make the private ownership of guns impractical. The gun violence we all hate is caused primarily by criminals who will not stop using guns because of more laws. If it were that simple, some of the 22,000 existing laws would have stopped the violence." ... |

A 16-year-old student at Hunters Lane High School was arrested yesterday afternoon for carrying a loaded gun on campus, Metro police said.
Another student saw the .32- caliber Cobra semiautomatic pistol fall from the 10th-grader's pocket while in class just before 1 p.m. and reported it to one of the school's resource officers, police said.
When questioned by officers, the 16-year-old denied having the weapon.
Police said the classroom was then cleared and the school principal found the gun in a box of books near the front of the room.
The student was charged in Juvenile Court with carrying a gun onto school property. Police are investigating where the student got the weapon and why it was taken to school. |
