Claims of 'Huge' Anti-Gun Protests Were Lies, Says CCRKBA

"A Brady Campaign news release headline claiming that 'huge' crowds turned out across America for anti-gun protests on Tuesday was both false and misleading, the [CCRKBA] said this morning. ..."

"'Careful analysis of news coverage, or the lack of it in the 24 hours following the Tuesday protests, confirm that these events were pretty much a bust,' said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. 'The biggest crowds reported were 'about 200' people bused to an event at Lake Barrington, Illinois, and another in Philadelphia. A Maryland protest ... drew about 60 demonstrators, and one at Seattle's Green Lake Park attracted two people ... That gives a whole new definition of the term 'lie-in' that was used to describe this protest." ...

"Two years after The New Gun Week a publication owned by the Second Amendment Foundation revealed that U.S. Forest Service personnel were incorrectly using an obscure regulation to prohibit recreational shooting near forest roads, the agency has issued a memorandum correcting the error, the SAF has learned."

"Under the old interpretation, the USFS, particularly in Colorados Boulder Ranger District, had been preventing the public from recreational shooting within 150 yards of any road on the presumption that a road is an 'occupied area' under the language of Federal Regulation 36 CFR 261.10. But the memorandum, issued by Joel Holtrop, deputy chief of the National Forest System, clarifies the regulation." ...

"In an update, Sebastian points us to the NRA Damage Control page, where Jackson tells us he didn't mean semiautos, and when he was talking about limiting magazine capacity to 5 rounds, he was talking about for hunting, not from general ownership." ...

"I can't find any other conclusion to draw from this than he does support banning full autos from civilian possession. I don't know what the hell Jackson thinks the Second Amendment is about, but he certainly hasn't demonstrated a competent understanding of the unalienable right of the people to keep and bear arms to deserve a leadership position." ...

"As the Armys suicide rate hits record levels in the Iraq war, theres small wonder practically everyone in Congress wants to deal with the parallel emerging crisis of depressed veterans tempted to take their own lives. Everyone, that is, except Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma. He stands alone in blocking final passage of a suicide prevention bill in fear that the governments record-keeping on troubled vets might somehow crimp their ability to purchase handguns."

"The past few months we have seen murders on the rise in that area. Is that the development Magic Johnson hoped for when he opened his gym at Lincoln and Woodbury? I don't think so. So what are we seeing? A well-armed, ready to kill and maim cohort of people who lack empathy for others." ...

"Re: 'Democratic presidential contenders take potshots at Second Amendment' (Perspectives, July 20)."

"Columnist Michelle Malkin called U.S. Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., the embodiment of snide. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. She defends a man who owns a Bushmaster AR-15, and goes on to spout her spiel about the Second Amendment."

"It's late Wednesday night, and the report on the VA Tech shooting is due out tomorrow, but in typical fashion several mainstream news outlets got their hands on it." ...

"What a bunch of stinking bullshit! 'Deep divisions' over 'rapid fire and high-capacity magazines'? Were you guys really considering even the slightest effort to ban or increase regulation of such firearms? Out of your scope is damn right. But that's not what I'm upset about. It is the implication (assuming the NYT article accurately sums up the report) that VA Tech did not already have a weapons policy (regulation of guns on campus) by insisting that the state of Virginia establish a right for colleges to regulate firearms." ...

"The report speculates - and I DO mean SPECULATES - that if 'numerous people had been rushing around with handguns outside Norris Hall on the morning of April 16, the possibility of accidental or mistaken shootings would have increased significantly.'"

"Of course, there's no actual evidence that any accidental or mistaken shooting would have taken place. After all, there was only ONE obvious target - the one holding guns and shooting at students. And chances are, had anyone in those classrooms actually had a firearm as Cho was shooting random students, they would have had a fighting chance - certainly a better chance than without."

"After the release of Virginia Tech's internal review of the shooting spree ... it was hard to imagine a more clueless document on the tragedy being released. But the report released Wednesday by an eight-member panel headed by Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine takes the prize."

"VT's review called on police, counselors and other university personnel to monitor students whose behavior might indicate they pose a threat. It also recommended internal locks on classroom doors and Internet-based message boards to transmit warnings." ...

The Diplomad believes that the report, quite frankly, gives little comfort to those who advocate more restrictions on the Second Amendment." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
For, in principle, there is no difference between a law prohibiting the wearing of concealed arms, and a law forbidding the wearing such as are exposed; and if the former be unconstitutional, the latter must be so likewise. But it should not be forgotten, that it is not only a part of the right that is secured by the constitution; it is the right entire and complete, as it existed at the adoption of the constitution; and if any portion of that right be impaired, immaterial how small the part may be, and immaterial the order of time at which it be done, it is equally forbidden by the constitution. [Bliss vs. Commonwealth, 12 Ky. (2 Litt.) 90, at 92, and 93, 13 Am. Dec. 251 (1822)
