"Kalifornia's S.357 calls for the semi-automatic handguns, such as those worn by police officers and owned by millions of law-abiding givers in society, to be designated as 'unsafe' by the year 2009 if their ammunition is not stamped with a serial number 'as they fire', which weapon must be in compliance by Jan 1st, '09. The ban goes into effect on August 11, and city residents have 90 days from that date to register or dispose of their firearms that meet the city's definition of an assault weapon."
"... Of course, easy process or not, criminals still won't be registering their guns. Even the assistant city attorney who worked on the language for City Council, Josh Cox, admitted to the Columbus Dispatch in a story a few weeks ago that the ordinance will have no effect on criminals. One lawsuit already has been filed on this issue, and others are expected." ... |

Christchurch police have destroyed up to 600 plastic air pistols and BB guns being sold for just a few dollars in local dairies, and often to children.
The guns were retailing for between $7.95 and $12.95 and police say the importer did not have a licence to sell firearms.
Sergeant Roger Hutton says the guns are not toys and can be very dangerous to anyone, but particularly children. He is worried there may be more guns out in the community which were sold before police were aware of the problem. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
We'll take one step at a time, and the first is necessarily - given the political realities - very modest. We'll have to start working again to strengthen the law, and then again to strengthen the next law and again and again. Our ultimate goal, total control of handguns, is going to take time. The first problem is to slow down production and sales. Next is to get registration. The final problem is to make possession of all handguns and ammunition (with a few exceptions) totally illegal. Pete Shields, founder of Handgun Control, Inc., New Yorker Magazine, June 26, 1976, pg. 53 |
