Sen. Obama decried the inaction on the part of the Bush administration to ban assault rifles, mentioning that the nearly three dozen children killed in Chicago this year is higher than the number of Illinois servicemen who have died in Iraq.
...
After directing most of his comments at the powerful gun lobby led by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the Bush administration for the explosion of guns on the streets, ...
“We also have to recognize that part of the reason that guns are so deadly in our society and in our communities in particular is because we've got young men standing on the streets without anything else better to do than gangbang,” he said. |

Your hateful, close-minded, ignorant stereotyping of the participants in the machine-gun shoot is shameful.
On what do you base your assessment that these people are "illegitimate gun abusers?" If you knew the first thing about legal machine-gun ownership, you would know that the individuals putting this show on are as legitimate and highly regulated as gun owners can get.
They are a bunch of like-minded enthusiasts getting together to share their appreciation of the historical significance and technology that these high-performance machines represent - no different in any way from a bunch of powerful sports-car owners getting together at NHIS. |

"You look at the defendants, what they knew or what they should have known. What they reasonably knew," said Russell Gabriel, a law professor at the University of Georgia who questions the legality of no-knock warrants. "How long does a person have to wait when someone is coming through their door before they can begin to protect themselves and their property?"
Donald E. Wilkes Jr. another UGA law professor, agrees with Gabriel. He cited the 1989 case of a Florida man charged with killing a police officer serving a no-knock warrant but was acquitted after using a self-defense strategy.
"A no-knock warrant is a police-state tactic," Wilkes said. "We don't want police bursting into people's homes without giving them any notice." |

An attempted robbery soured Saturday afternoon when a man selling shoes out of his Jeep stabbed one of the men trying to steal from him, police said.
The victim was selling shoes out of his gray Nissan Pathfinder at the Advance Auto Parts store on Milton Road when he was approached by several would-be robbers, police said. One of the robbers tried to take his money, while the others smashed the window of his SUV, trying to get to the shoes.
Police said that's when the victim stabbed one of the suspects in self-defense. In the process, the man accidentally cut himself. |

Another stolen car, another handgun stolen as well, to wind up in the hands of who knows whom. When a friend recently had his older Honda vehicle stolen, he found out that the model is high on the "steal me" list for its parts. He also lost his credit cards and money-filled wallet. Listening to his troubles got me thinking about the whole notion of "car" and "trunk" guns for personal defense. Then I questioned why he left both gun and wallet in his car, which was parked right in front of his house. ... What he lacks, though, is a place of employment that does not ban firearms from their facilities--a problem faced by many. |

The numbers do not reflect the emotional response experienced when it's learned a teen was involved in a crime. Apparently an increase in the rate of such crimes has not happened locally. This knowledge offers little comfort, however, especially when a crime takes a life. What do we do?
Stricter gun laws, for instance, are unlikely to prevent those who want to obtain a weapon from doing so. "If you want one and have money, you could get one in, like, two days," was how one teen explained the situation in a report by The Advocate. We have the right to bear arms in the United States and some people always will be ready to exploit this right for their ill-gotten gains. |

Yesterday's Manchester Republican Committee fundraiser was a blast. Literally.
GOP boosters got the chance to fire machine guns in exchange for a $25 contribution. About 300 people came to the Pelham Fish & Game Club to shoot tommy guns and M16s at bowling pins three feet in the air. They raised between $2,000 and $2,500, split between the Manchester GOP and the club.
"Isn't it exhilarating?" said Jerry Thibodeau, president of the Manchester Republican Committee, amid the rattle of machine gun fire. "It's like driving in the Indy 500. Vroooooooom." |

A 43-YEAR-OLD man exploded with rage and killed his elderly parents with an axe after his mother laughed when the man's pet cat died, the Supreme Court in Launceston heard yesterday. Stephen Alexander Harper pleaded guilty to the murder of Roderick Alexander Harper, 88, and Helene May Harper, 77, on August 30, 2006. Crown prosecutor John Ransom said Harper killed his parents with a number of blows to the head with the back of an axe on the day his cat Tootie died. The court heard Harper believed his mother may have poisoned the cat. "He snapped and killed them and told friends his parents had treated him like dirt," Mr Ransom said. "He believed his mother had poisoned the cat because she laughed about it." |

After realizing that his home had an intruder, a homeowner chased down a 19-year-old man and shot him to death, according to a police report. Raymond Lemes said he was asleep when he heard a scream. Lemes grabbed his gun and realized an intruder, later identified as Tracy Glass, was in his home. Glass took off and Lemes chased him down the street. When he caught up to the suspect, Lemes said Glass took a swing at him so he shot the man. When police arrived, they found Glass facedown, dead with gunshot wounds to the chest, neck and arm. The homeowner had a license for his .40 caliber Glock pistol, a police report said. |

The visible agenda of the liberal Democrats and the liberal news media is obvious. President Bush cannot sneeze without enduring a barrage of venomous criticism. If the liberal Democrats tell a half truth often enough, it begins to take on the persona of truth. The hidden agenda is what should concern most free- thinking American voters. That agenda is the heavily orchestrated erosion of our Constitution and Bill of Rights, particularly the Second Amendment. |

In the aftermath of the Petit family slayings in Cheshire, we all reached for explanations: How do human beings sink this low? How could this tragedy have been prevented? Why? There are so many nagging questions. They all need to be asked. And maybe some old arguments need to be hashed out again. ... That is why one old question is worth asking again. It is this: What if the Second Amendment is for real? Is it possible that it should it be revered, just like the First Amendment? -------- COMMENT: At least ONE Connecticut newspaper editor gets it.

In Philadelphia, shady gun buyers sent girlfriends to a suburban pawn shop, Lou's Loan, where the staff wouldn't raise a fuss if a young woman came by a few times a month to purchase cheap handguns. In a recent Associated Press report, such gun shops are increasingly being targeted as the source of the majority of weapons used in crimes. In a 2000 report, federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms officials said nearly 40 percent of all weapons traced by the bureau originated from 332 gun dealers nationwide. That means that less than 1 percent of the nations gun stores supply nearly half of all weapons traced in connection with a crime. |

When trying to decide which guns one should put back for survival, there are a few things to be taken into consideration. Weapons intended for our purpose should be versatile, meaning they can be put to use in a number of varying situations like hunting and self-defense, and do both with equal capability, pertaining to the situation at hand. Survival guns should be cambered for a common round, preferably a current widely issued military caliber. Any rifle or handgun chosen must be robust and reliable, and for the most part low maintenance, during long periods of hard use. |

"...I ask of every man to deliver to me for the use of our soldiers the rifles and shot guns which are now useless to him. Let the hunter forbear his sport, and lend his guns to arm the solider. No patriot will refuse this. Each must contribute to the common cause. He who lets his shot gun hang idly in his home, or shoulders it for his amusement, when it is required for the stern duties of the fight, is an unworthy son of the South . . . . Let our people, one and all, look to it, and see that all the arms in the State, not absolutely indispensable for protection at home be at once delivered to my agent. If they cannot afford to give, let them sell--I will pay for them..." |

"...It is known that the rebel army is largely supplied with clothing, arms, saddles, and even food and ammunition, by forced and voluntary contributions from the deluded people of the South. It is not right that the army of the nation should be required in the least to depend upon such ill-assorted, uncertain, and hazardous supplies. But whenever it can be safely encouraged, aided, and strengthened at all, by voluntary gifts direct from the people, it is fitting and right that such gifts should be cheerfully and generously offered. It is hoped that the response to this invitation will prove that the heart of the people is with the army in its defence of our nationality..." |

They say the man found his ex, and then grabbed her and started stabbing her. Other people tried to hit him with chairs and tables to stop him, but they say the man kept stabbing the woman -- even cutting other people in the process -- until someone else pulled out a gun and shot him.
Medics tried to help the victim, but she had already died. Her ex-husband was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he later died.
Homicide detectives questioned the shooter and then released him. The shooter apparently did not know the man he shot or the woman who was stabbed, but police say his gun was properly registered. |
