At least 3,500 Americans have been detained inside a Chicago police warehouse described by some of its arrestees as a secretive interrogation facility, newly uncovered records reveal.
Of the thousands held in the facility known as Homan Square over a decade, 82% were black. Only three received documented visits from an attorney, according to a cache of documents obtained when the Guardian sued the police.
Despite repeated denials from the Chicago police department that the warehouse is a secretive, off-the-books anomaly, the Homan Square files begin to show how the citys most vulnerable people get lost in its criminal justice system.

A group of residents in northern Idaho lined up outside a U.S. Navy veteran's house on Thursday to protest claims that federal officials are planning on confiscating the man's weapons.
Idaho Republican state Rep. Heather Scott of Blanchard said the Veteran Affairs office has sent a letter to John Arnold of Priest River warning him that he cannot possess or purchase firearms.
The protest -spearheaded by Scott- attracted roughly 100 people. Among them were Bonner County Sheriff Daryl Wheeler, who promised to stand guard against any federal attempts to remove Arnold's guns, and Republican Washington state Rep. Matthew Shea of Spokane Valley, who described the event as a "defiance against tyranny."

A man is dead and two people are on the loose after police say an armed robbery attempt was prevented with a self-defense shooting.

The incident occurred around 9:25 p.m. on the east side of an apartment complex near Spencer Street and East Tropicana Avenue, according to Metro Lt. Dan McGrath. A man and woman were exiting their car when three black males came up one holding a gun and tried to take the womans purse.

The driver had his own gun and shot and killed the suspect. The other two men left the scene.

The mainstream media would never admit it, but the verdict is in on concealed carry. The nearly 25-year plummet in violent crime is in part the result of concealed carry, and the (always absurd) predictions of a Wild West mentality where permit holders go to guns over minor disagreements has never remotely materialized.

In fact, a slightly astonishing opposite is true, as this reveals: The extremely law-abiding police (duh) are six to ten times less law-abiding than permit holders.

Despite these massive proofs that yes, the average man or woman can clearly be trusted to own and carry a firearm, the 2016 election represents a major threat to this pervasive societal benefit, although the mechanism may surprise you: the Supreme Court.

DC: Entrenched Gun Control, Elevated Gun Crime

When the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) overturned Washington DCs draconian gun ban in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), one could not be blamed for thinking the pillars of gun control could crumble and the liberties protected by the 2nd Amendment would flourish. However the DC City Council reacted to the ruling by complying with it in theory, but requiring a large number of hoops for law-abiding citizens to jump through in order to arm themselves in reality.

Military should revise 'gun-free' policies

The issue resurfaced in the wake of last months killing of five military servicemen in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Reports indicated that a surviving Navy officer, Lt. Cmdr. Timothy White, could face punishment because he was armed with a personal handgun in violation of the facilities gun-free rules, and shot back at the attacker, Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez.

Its important to note the Navy has now issued a statement saying it isnt planning to charge White. The early reports appear based on speculation. Military facilities generally do prohibit most personnel except military police and a few officers from being armed, and there is a federal law against unauthorized shooting on federal property.

Of particular concern is the exclusive focus on firearm-related homicides. Both elements contained in this compound term are extremely problematic. First, a decline in the percentage of killings committed with guns is meaningless when there is a corresponding increase in the percentage committed with knives and other weapons. The same number of people are dying. Knife crime in London has increased since the handgun ban in England and Wales went into effectwhy would Australia be any different?

In fact, its not. Statistics show a definite upward trend for knife crime in Australia. If the only thing the confiscation changed is what kind of weapon youre most likely to be murdered with, this is a hollow victory indeed.

Tonights much-anticipated Republican debate in Cleveland will cover lots of ground, but there are some questions that might not be asked that really should be if any of these candidates expect to fire up gun owners and keep them active through the election next year.

The debate kicks off at 9 p.m. Eastern and 6 p.m. Pacific, before what could be a large audience of people who hope that someone will emerge from this pack to take the White House and turn the country around after eight years of Barack Obama. Already, according to The Hill, Moodys Analytics is suggesting that its all for naught, because November 2016 will see the Democrats retain the Oval office.

Why do so many Americans own guns? The main reason, according to surveys, is protection. Advocates argue that guns in the home both deter crime (criminals refrain from even trying to break in because they fear being shot by an armed citizen) and thwart it (an armed citizen can stop a crime in progress, preventing injury or theft).

The scientific evidence, however, provides little support for these arguments. Quite the opposite.

In terms of deterrence, a recent study found that states with higher levels of household gun ownership have higher levels of firearm crime and do not have lower levels of other types of crime.

Doctors and medical personnel throughout Florida will soon be under new orders: talk to your patients about gun safety and risk losing your right to practice medicine.

Two federal judges, who last year ruled that patient-privacy and gun ownership trump freedom of speech, again upheld the gag order on doctors and medical personnel that will go into effect on August 4 unless a further appeal is filed.

For the third straight year, Arizona was ranked the best state in the nation for gun owners by Guns and Ammo magazine, which praised the states self-defense and carry laws, its shooting sports and strong gun culture.

Arizona combines strong laws with an unmatched shooting culture and a strong industry presence, said the magazine, which said it gave the state full points in each of the five categories in which it ranked states.

Im very proud of this ranking, most certainly, said Noble C. Hathaway, president of the Arizona State Rifle and Pistol Association. Gun shooting is a wonderful, safe sport to be enjoyed.

If ever there existed a testament to the need for universal concealed handgun license reciprocity, New York City is glaring proof of it.

August 3, 2015, an honest U.S. citizen, Marine Corps veteran, resident of Texas, and mother of three, was visiting the 9/11 memorial with her friend in the City, when she was arrested for carrying two handguns. The story appeared, August 3, 2015, in the New York Post, under the title, Pistol Packin Mama Under Fire.

beautiful night with a blue moon brought two adults to a St. Paul river bluff to enjoy the weather, but police said they were soon met with a random act of violence that ended with a 16-year-old dead.

Four juvenile males approached the adults Friday night and one, wearing a mask and gloves, pulled a handgun and tried to rob the adults, police said. One of the victims has a permit to carry a handgun, pulled his own weapon and shot the suspect, they told police. The teenage suspect from West St. Paul died at the scene near a World War I monument at Summit Avenue and Mississippi River Boulevard.

DC: D.C. residents would feel safer if they could carry a concealed weapon

The Aug. 3 Metro article Struggling to feel safe in rising tide of violence showed why D.C. residents need more freedom to carry a concealed weapon. As a Mississippian, I grew up feeling safe because I knew I could defend myself if my life was threatened.

Unfortunately, I do not feel safe in the District.

Similar to the victim presented in the article, who was seriously injured in a shooting while visiting a friend in the District, I must rely on emergency responders with notoriously slow response times to save my life in the event of a shooting. Although the Second Amendment guarantees my right to bear arms, the District is infringing upon this right.

Each Wednesday morning, some 20-25 shooters travel the Lincoln County Wildlife Gun Club and spend the morning shooting clay targets. Not a bad way to start the day, in my opinion.

As I entered the clubhouse, the scent of fresh baked cinnamon rolls caught my attention. The coffee was on and shooters, both men and women, talked about a variety of topics. I looked around and noted all the upgrades and remodeling efforts that the club has been doing. It is looking good.

Pope played nice with the judge's order. He handed over the weapons. Recently, after a period of time allowed by the courts, Pope filed to have that 2013 order amended. He wanted his firearms back.

In late July, a court agreed to modify the protection order. I am ecstatic that the courts realized that under the Second Amendment, I have a constitutional right to bear arms to protect myself and my family just like any other American citizen, Pope stated in a statement. This is the beginning of my road to redemption.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
To have no proud monarch driving over me with his gilt coaches; nor his host of excise-men and tax-gatherers insulting and robbing me; but to be my own master, my own prince and sovereign, gloriously preserving my national dignity, and pursuing my true happiness; planting my vineyards, and eating their luscious fruits; and sowing my fields, and reaping the golden grain: and seeing millions of brothers all around me, equally free and happy as myself. This, sir, is what I long for. -- General Francis Marion, American War of Independence, Georgetown, SC [Source: 'Marion, The Life of Gen. Francis Marion' by M. L. Weems, Ch.18]
