After deadly shootings over the weekend in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas, Rep. Robert Wittenberg, D-Huntington Woods, fielded another round of media calls about his legislation that would allow courts to temporarily take guns away from somebody posing an extreme risk in Michigan.
Earlier this year, he started his third term and introduced the legislation for the third time. It hasnt budged.
His proposal would let immediate family members, current and former spouses or partners, roommates and law enforcement could ask a judge for an order to temporarily take possession of a persons firearms and prevent them from buying new ones. |

Once again, lone gunmen armed with (legally purchased) military-style assault weapons were able to quickly kill unarmed civilians in two mass shootings this past weekend. The fact that the Dayton shooter was killed within 30 seconds of firing his first shot and yet was still able to kill nine people within that short period of time, injuring dozens more makes plainly visible what military veterans like myself have long understood: Assault rifles are uniquely lethal because theyre designed to kill as many humans as possible, as quickly as possible.

There are times where slight cracks are seen in the Second Amendment movement. Red flag laws sound great. In principle, I support them, but Democrats will never agree to the strict due process mechanisms that ensure peoples rights arent trampled on and it would most certainly be abused and morphed into a confiscatory weapon. In short, this will be the first of many policy weapons the anti-gun Left wants to use in their safety over security (and due process) agenda when it comes to gun politics. Were now at it again: two horrific mass shooting less than 24 hours apart in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

America is dangerous. The world is dangerous. Here, there, and everywhere, danger is lurking. When people act unpredictably and threateningly, the best thing to do is be prepared. Police and security are the ideal intermediaries, but personal safety cannot be entirely entrusted to others. It is time to responsibly conceal a firearm.

East Bay Congressman Mark DeSaulnier is among those calling on the U.S. Senate to reconvene and act on pending gun bills. "No one should die, no one else should die," DeSaulnier told reporters before hosting a town hall meeting in Richmond Monday evening. "It's madness to let this go on when we know we can implement policy- that won't stop them completely- but will stop many mass shootings." |

The mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio brought the discussion of gun laws back to the forefront. In his address to the nation, President Donald Trump voiced support for so-called red flag laws. "We must make sure that those judged to pose a grave risk to public safety do not have access to fire arms and that if they do, those firearms can be taken away through rapid due process," Trump said Monday morning from the White House. "That is why I have called for red flag laws, also known as extreme risk protection orders." |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands? Patrick Henry, 3 J. Elliot, Debates in the Several State Conventions 45, 2d ed. Philadelphia, 1836 |
