"As the nation's loss from gun violence escalates to more than $100 billion per year, according to some studies, leading U.S. Senators on both sides of the gun debate have joined to introduce the Child Protection and Home Safety Act of 2005. Sens. Orrin G. Hatch, R-UT, Charles E. Schumer, D-NY and Larry Craig, R-ID, a National Rifle Association (NRA) trustee, introduced the bill Friday. ..." ...

"In the United States, approximately 50-percent of all households contain a firearm. Statistics have shown that an improperly stored firearm kills one child every three hours in the United States, making it the second leading cause of deaths among children. ..." ...

KABA Note: One death every three hours is 2920 per year. The only way you can get anywhere near this number is by including every firearm related death, including homicide and suicide, and count as 'children' anyone 19 years old and younger.

"With a bipartisan vote of 65-31, the U.S. Senate passed an important piece of tort reform legislation before departing for its August recess. The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (S397) will protect responsible firearm manufacturers from 'junk' lawsuits that blame them for the criminal misuse of lawfully sold products. Since 1998, members of the firearms industry have faced dozens of such frivolous lawsuits filed by cities, anti-gun advocacy groups and crime victims." ...

"... Sure enough, as he looked into the woods, a big black furry behind could be seen waddling off into the surrounding forest, like a commuter trudging home from the train station." ...

"To Mr. Wyman, a National Rifle Association member but not a hunter, it's all proof that New Jersey needs regular bear hunts to keep the population down. You don't have to read it that way. Which is more meaningful: that he's seen so many bears or that ... the bears have been as advertised - shy and retiring, as likely to run from people ..." ...

"Fresh from its victory last week, when a timorous Senate voted to protect the gun industry from damage suits, the National Rifle Association is now urging a boycott of a major energy company, ConocoPhillips, that dares to protect its employees from gunplay in the workplace. With a sense of civics worthy of the OK Corral, the NRA announced a national campaign, replete with billboards, to urge gun lovers to bypass Conoco and Phillips 66 gasoline stations until the company drops its ban on employees' keeping firearms in company parking lots."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
For, in principle, there is no difference between a law prohibiting the wearing of concealed arms, and a law forbidding the wearing such as are exposed; and if the former be unconstitutional, the latter must be so likewise. But it should not be forgotten, that it is not only a part of the right that is secured by the constitution; it is the right entire and complete, as it existed at the adoption of the constitution; and if any portion of that right be impaired, immaterial how small the part may be, and immaterial the order of time at which it be done, it is equally forbidden by the constitution. [Bliss vs. Commonwealth, 12 Ky. (2 Litt.) 90, at 92, and 93, 13 Am. Dec. 251 (1822)
