During the Chattanooga shooting, one Navy officer, Lt. Cmdr. Timothy White, fired back at the gunman with a personal firearm. The Navy immediately launched an investigation to determine potential wrongdoing.
But an official with insider knowledge of the investigation just confirmed with Stars and Stripes that White will not be charged with discharging a firearm on federal property, contradicting reports from columnist Allen West, who stated that he had received a text message saying that the Navy planned to charge White, a father of six children. |

According to Henry County Superior Court records, the grand jury returned a no bill of indictment against Jared Lyon, 15, during its July 9 session.
Grand jurors rejected the charges of voluntary manslaughter and felony murder in the shooting death of Dalton McCollough. Henry County police Capt. Joey Smith said McCollough, 17, drove to the Lyon home on Wyckliffe Drive house to meet with his girlfriend. |

Police are searching for the second suspect in a home invasion that took place in the 1500 block of Hilbish Avenue just after 2 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Neighbors tell Channel 3 News they heard three shots coming from the house. They said they then saw a tall man running out of the house, headed for the woods.
Investigators said an occupant at the home shot the suspect's partner dead in what appeared to be an act of self defense. Police said the homeowner, identified as David Hillis, grabbed a gun and shot one of the suspects. |

Even a gun-control freak like me would have to concede that one undeniably beneficial use of a good rifle besides hunting or self-defense is the purpose for which William Meredith used it: to shoot down a drone, like the one hovering above his sunbathing daughter.
Columnist Stephen Carter is right on target in asserting that because regulations regarding the use of the new drone technology are sparse and unsettled, many citizens will take matters into their own hands. The government, in kowtowing to business and hobby interests, has flubbed its responsibility in this regard, and there will be a price to pay. |

Controversial bills that would arm people on college and school campuses with concealed weapons will be back before the legislature in 2016.
The two National Rifle Association-backed proposals failed to pass the House and Senate in 2015. Lawmakers filed them again this week for the legislative session that starts in January.
One (SB 68, HB 4001), introduced by Sen. Greg Evers, R-Baker, and Rep. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, would allow anyone with a concealed carry license from the state to bring their guns with them on college campuses.
The other (SB 72), by Evers, would give school districts the power to arm a current or former member of the military or law enforcement in each school. |

A group of residents in northern Idaho lined up outside a U.S. Navy veteran's house on Thursday to protest claims that federal officials are planning on confiscating the man's weapons.
Idaho Republican state Rep. Heather Scott of Blanchard said the Veteran Affairs office has sent a letter to John Arnold of Priest River warning him that he cannot possess or purchase firearms.
The protest spearheaded by Scott attracted roughly 100 people. Among them were Bonner County Sheriff Daryl Wheeler, who promised to stand guard against any federal attempts to remove Arnold's guns, and Republican Washington state Rep. Matthew Shea of Spokane Valley, who described the event as a "defiance against tyranny." |

The Williamson County attorney says that the fair kicking off Friday can still ban guns despite a recent state attorney generals opinion suggesting otherwise.
County Attorney Bobby Cook argues that Williamson County Fair Association could still ban guns because the state law eliminating gun bans at parks should not apply because the site of the fair the Agricultural Exposition Park is more of a civic center or other building facility where firearms can still be prohibited. |

Several New York retailers, including Walmart, Sears and Amazon, have agreed to remove realistic toy guns from their shelves and pay $300,000 in penalties as part of a settlement with the state.
The state attorney general, Eric Schneiderman, announced on Monday that his office had found more than 6,400 toy guns sold from 2012 to 2014 that violated preexisting New York laws, which ban the sale of black, blue, silver, or aluminum toy guns. Instead, these must be brightly colored or translucent. |

Tennessee Adjt. Gen. Max Haston announced today that Tennessee Army and Air National Guard members with valid state-issued gun carry permits will be allowed to carry weapons at state armories and facilities.
The step comes more than two weeks after 24-year-old Mohommad Abdulazeez killed five U.S. servicemen in Chattanooga. Gov. Bill Haslam later directed Haston to come up with a plan in response to demands from many that National Guard members needed to be able to protect themselves from similar attacks. |

On August 7, the Baltimore Sun ran a column ubiquitously examining the chasm between Americans who arm themselves for self-defense and Americans who do not. But on a deeper level, the column asserted that the meaning of the Second Amendment has been in dispute for most of the nations history and only came to be viewed as a protection of individual rights after the Supreme Courts decision in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008).
This is the same argument that the LA Times put forth on May 22 and one which The New York Times as also been peddling since the Heller decision came down. |

One of the complaints sometimes levied at gun magazines centers on the price tag of the firearms reviewed. Top-shelf 1911s, high-end AR-15s and the latest innovations in the firearm industry are frequent fodder for articles, leaving some to comment they cannot afford any of the firearms covered in the shooting media. Well, heres a handguncomplete with a steel lockbox and secure cablealmost everyone can afford. |

Theyre kind of on the side of, Lets take over the government, Boyd said.
Other members have been kicked out for racist remarks. And the group has a strict no alcohol policy during meetings and training.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti on Friday signed into law a city ban on possession of high-capacity gun magazines.
The city council unanimously passed the ordinance barring within city limits possession of magazines holding ten or more rounds on July 28. LA is now the largest city in the state to pass the gun-control law, closing a loophole that existed in state law that banned the sale of high-capacity magazines. |

The Republican presidential debate was made into a gun free zone, much to the dismay of staunch pro-gun conservatives, reported Salon. Several of the candidates have taken pro-gun stances, but the gun free policy at the debate last night proves that preaching the Second Amendment is just a tactic to win votes.
Clevelands Quicken Loans Arena has a firm no-gun policy that also applies to people with concealed carry permits. Its too dangerous to allow firearms inside of a large venue that holds thousands of people. When a representative of St. Anselm College was asked whether guns would be allowed during its hosting of the GOP debate next February, the representative said absolutely not. |
