"This campaign season, the Democrats seem to be throwing everything they can think of at George W. Bush to see what sticks. It doesn't seem to matter if the charges are true or even if the president has any connection to the subject in question."
"One of the most recent charges is that Bush endangers Americans if he doesn't actively push for a renewal of the Clinton-era ban on certain semi-automatic rifles and pistols. The decade-old ban is set to sunset in September unless Congress and the president renew it."
"Bush has expressed support for a renewal, but so far he hasn't pressured lawmakers to send him an extension to sign." ... |

"The U.S. Army's pursuit of a weapon to replace the aging M-16 rifle is still on track despite a failed congressional attempt to pump nearly $26 million into the federal budget for manufacturing the weapon in 2005."
"Military and legislative officials say development and testing of the new XM8 assault rifle will run through December. It will be the second round of tests for the highly anticipated rifle, with evaluations taking place in the desert near Yuma, Ariz., the tropical jungles of Panama, and the arctic climate in Alaska, said Col. "The renewal of the assault weapons ban instituted in 1994 and set to expire this fall is the cause du jour for liberals. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, New York Times, Oregonian, San Francisco Chronicle, and The Washington Postto name just a fewhave all sounded the call to arms."
"Most editorials tug at the heartstrings while pulling wool over the eyes of their readers. The July 17 New York Times editorial, for example, makes a classic populist appeal: 'Few Americans favor a return to the day when military-style assault weapons like AK-47s, Uzis and Tec-9 pistols could be manufactured and sold, making them readily available for use by gangs and drug traffickers.' The Los Angeles Times has been even more alarmist, calling these guns 'weapons of mass destruction.'" ... |

"The Federal ban on assault weapons is scheduled to end next month, but some gun experts and gun dealers say the law effectively expired years ago."
"Gun dealers have used gaping loopholes in the law to sell thousands of military-style rifles - knockoffs of AK-47s, M-16s and Uzis - that have been legally manufactured by U.S. companies." [emphasis added]
"One disheartening example is the made-in-the-USA Bushmaster XM-15, a legal copycat of the Army's commercially banned M-16. The semiautomatic Bushmaster was the gun of choice for John Muhammad and Lee Malvo, the Washington-area snipers who killed 10 people in their 2002 rampage." ... -------

"Before the assault weapons ban, America was a very different place. Many people remember the shooting in an elementary schoolyard in Stockton, Calif., where a deranged gunman used an AK-47 to fire 106 rounds of ammunition into 35 elementary school children and teachers in less than two minutes."
"Gone forever was the notion, a beloved talking point of gun extremists, that assault weapons are really the same as hunting rifles. The nation was outraged. And in 1994, after the Long Island Rail Road shootings that claimed my husband and nearly my son, America finally made these killing machines illegal."
"But after Sept. 13, these 19 rapid-fire guns will once again be legal. Congress has thus far failed to extend the ban, and to date President Bush has offered only lip-service support for the measure." ... |

"The 1994 semiautomatic or so-called assault weapons ban expires Sept. 13. The media drumbeat to reauthorize it has begun, and some politicians are dancing to the familiar tune."
"Instead of merely reauthorizing the ban, however, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-L.I.) seeks to ban more guns and implement a national registration scheme. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the assault weapons ban sponsor, said on CBS' '60 Minutes,' 'If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate for an outright ban, picking up every one of them - Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them all in - I would have done it.' The gun control agenda has never been stated more honestly." ... |

President George W. Bush has said he favors an extension and has pledged to sign such a bill. But Congress has to pass one first, and so far on the campaign trail, the president is doing nothing to encourage that."
"House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, is opposed to bringing the extension which expires Sept. 13 up for a vote.
