"Chris Bird, a journalist and handgun expert, might really believe everything he's saying. On the other hand, maybe he just wants to sell a few books."
"... Now, he has written a book on how to choose, carry and shoot a gun in self-defense."
"That's all fine and well, until you get to one of his premises. Bird says that for decades, Americans have been 'brainwashed' into a passive mentality that made them easy targets for miscreants of every stripe. But thanks to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the scales have fallen from our eyes."
"'We learned,' Bird says, 'that the government and the professionals could not protect us.'"
"If his remark can be taken at face value, it's almost astonishing in its naivet." ... |

"It has come to my attention that some well-meaning pro-gun activists have expressed concern about an amendment on armor-piercing ammunition that was added to the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (S. 397) during consideration of the measure on the Senate floor. Those concerns are unwarranted and many of the assumptions and interpretations concerning that provision are just plain wrong."

"That was Sandra Fromans experience nearly two decades ago. Her shouting, banging on the wall and even cranking the stereo to 11 didnt scare off the would-be intruder, but he eventually ... abandoned his effort to enter her domicile."
"Still, the minutes of sheer terror left an impression on the San Mateo-born and raised Froman, and it would prove to be a life-altering moment."

"Readers' questions have prompted me to examine further the Supreme Court's recent Kelo decision. Kelo is even worse than the calamity I declared it to be."
"Kelo does not mean the end of private property per se, but it does mean the end of anyone's secure possession, be the owner an individual or a corporation. To the extent that Americans still possess constitutional rights, Kelo could mean their end, as well." ...
"Indeed, as one astute reader noted, Kelo's public benefit concept of eminent domain could be used to condemn privately owned firearms. The Second Amendment would still be there. We would have a right to firearms in the abstract just as we have a right to property in the abstract, but every specific right can be condemned." ... |

Hoping to get more guns off the streets of New Orleans, the annual gun buy-back program is changing locations this year.
On Aug. 27, the program will move from Mid City to St. Bernard Avenue -- an area that has seen an increase in gun violence.
In the past six years, the program has collected thousands of guns by offering cash with no questions asked.
With restrictions in place at gun stores, many of the guns are purchased on the street. The gun buy-back aims to "out-price" the street transactions by offering $50 for guns and $75 for assault weapons.
The program's coordinators also are passing out free gunlocks. |
