These facts we know to be true:
John Crawford III was shot and killed Tuesday night by Beavercreek, Ohio police officers in a Walmart. Crawford was holding either an airsoft (6mm plastic projectile) or BB/pellet (4.5mm/.177-caliber metal projectile) rifle sold by Walmart that he picked up in the store. Crawford was on the phone when he was shot. Crawford did not have a criminal record. From there, the tale of what happened next diverges significantly depending upon the perspective of who is telling the story. ... Update: Authorities have confirmed that Mr. Crawford was holding a Crosman Mk-177, a pump-action BB-gun that bears a vague resemblance to the FN SCAR. |

There is stupid.. and then there is that special kind of DC stupid. The Palmer decision from the US District court is simply the latest example. The judge ruled that DC really is part of America and has to abide by our constitution. The judge said citizens in DC have the right of armed self-defense outside their home. Of course, DC disagrees.
DC argued that it is special and shouldnt have to obey the judges ruling. DC claims our nations capital is filled with special people who need special rules. DC hosts special events. DC draws special crowds and is filled with special buildings. The DC police claim they are really special police and need special common sense restriction applied in special areas. |

Democratic primary voters also face a tough choice in deciding whom to back: There's about a millimeter of difference between Sheldon and Thurston on policy issues and finding it requires an intense examination of their records and positions.
Thurston wants to repeal the controversial "Stand Your Ground" self-defense law, which became well known because of the George Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin case. Sheldon said it needs to be "tweaked [and] I would consider repeal." The 2005 law says that a person has "the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm." |

Despite what might be implied by this articles title, Second Amendment rights have actually expanded in D.C. recently. Last month, in Palmer v. District of Columbia __F. Supp.2d__ (2014); 2014 WL 3702854 (D.D.C. July 24, 2014), the US District Court held that the citys de facto prohibition on issuing licenses to carry handguns was unconstitutional. In light of high profile cases in the last several years, most notably District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008), and McDonald v. City of Chicago, 561 U.S. 742 (2010), the move towards expanding firearm and self-defense rights in the District is, quite literally, progressing beyond the threshold of the home and out the door. |

U.S. Rep. Mike Honda a Democrat from California has introduced legislation that would ban Americans from owning high-performance body armor.

On Tuesday, Missouri voters pushed aside the concerns of law enforcement, particularly from urban areas, and approved a ballot measure revamping their state constitution to strengthen gun rights in the Show Me State. The measure passed with 61% of the vote, carrying all but three jurisdictions: St. Louis City and County, and Boone County, which encompasses the university town of Columbia. The move is a step towards changing how the right to bear arms is seen. |

Robert McCartneys call to limit the right to carry handguns in the District to people who can justify to police that they need the weapon for self-defense highlighted how out of touch Post columnists are with legal and social norms pertaining to gun rights [Berettas hypocrisy in Maryland highlights crazy gun culture, Metro, Aug. 3]. More than half of the states allow open or concealed carry without a license, and the number of concealed carry licenses issued nationwide is estimated to have more than doubled since 2007 to more than 11 million. |

In reply to Rick Sundin's July 30 letter, "Public parks designated weapons-free," the ruling of the Davenport Parks and Recreation Department regarding guns in parks, I believe, is incredibly stupid and utopian. Citizens who genuinely and realistically are concerned about the safety of their loved ones should avoid "gun free" parks in Davenport and elsewhere.
Letter writer Rick Sundin appears to ignore the unpleasant reality that the criminally minded will not stop carrying firearms in parks and now have much easier pickings among park goers.
Violators of court restraining orders and those otherwise mentally disturbed can snuff out lives of unarmed, law-abiding citizens at will. |

If you build it, you hope they will come.
When Tom Krieg gets the Dogwood Hills Gun Club up and running in western Smith County chances are they will.
Krieg and his partners have purchased about 160 acres of land off County Road 1227 for a facility they hope becomes a destination site for rifle, pistol and shotgun sports as well as archery. Conceptual plans also call for classrooms for concealed handgun classes, hunter education and other safety classes, waterfowl dog training area along with facilities for large gatherings. |

Escobar also cited comments Nocco made to the press after sheriffs detectives shot and killed an unarmed suspect in a Zephyrhills drug case. Nocco defended his detectives, saying they feared for their lives when the suspect didnt respond to an order to show them his hands.
Escobar has argued that Oulson threw his cellphone at Reeves, and Reeves was in fear when he fired the shot that killed Oulson.
There appears to be a double standard for law enforcement officers, acting as law enforcement officers, who shoot in self-defense vs. a lay person who shoots in self defense, Escobar said. |

Its a phrase that youve probably heard many times: When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
Of course, this is not a criticism of police officers, but simply a cold, hard fact of reality.
The technology to instantly beam law enforcement into the heart of an emergency isnt quite there yet, and on Monday, Harnett County Sheriff Larry Rollins acknowledged this reality. |

According to Keane, only 13,600 of the predicted 420,000 additional background checks materialized; about seven percent. He also shared this observation: And lets remind those that think more control laws are always the answer: Criminals dont obey the law. The law-abiding obey the law and were not the problem. Expanding background checks have accomplished little in Colorado even if some anti-gun activists are now speaking less expansively of their panacea-like ability. |

A new 30-second advertisement featuring a Colorado police sergeant promoting the concept at the heart of an 18-page gun control measure on the November ballot is scheduled to begin airing today in the Seattle area, and it quickly brought a gloves-off reaction from the Evergreen States leading gun rights advocate.
The spot, produced by a group calling itself the Center for Gun Responsibility, a 501(c)(3), is the first televised shot in a battle between two initiatives that will be undoubtedly heating up over the next 2 months. It is a slick advertisement that Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Bellevue-based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, said is disingenuous. |

The man behind the lawsuit to overturn the Districts long-standing ban on carrying handguns in public is an openly gay, Oxford University-trained political moralist whose latest book is an edited collection of essays titled, Peace, Love and Liberty.
If youre interested in a firearms-owning peacenik, thats the book to read, Tom G. Palmer, 57, joked in an interview last week. |

"Deal set for tighter gun laws," The Boston Globe headline read. The article's subhead was even more telling: "Compromise state plan would let police go to court to deny licenses."
The Massachusetts Legislature reached an agreement on a bill that would tighten one of the nation's restrictive gun laws even further. The bill gives the police the power to go to court to keep rifles and shotguns from individuals they think are too dangerous to own them. |

With Mayor Henry Schwaller IV absent, commissioners discussed a proposal to ban the open carry of firearms in 12 city facilities. The same leaders debated gun possession in December when they allowed concealed carry on city properties.
...
"Unlike concealed carry, open carry exposes the public to individuals who are potentially untrained with a firearm," Scheibler said. "The public display of firearms may also alarm, frighten, intimidate and/or make city employees and the public feel unsafe."
City staff recommended adopting the prohibition on open carry in the buildings. Salina, Emporia, Junction City and Manhattan have enacted the measure, while Dodge City and Derby allow open and concealed carry. |
