The Kentucky Supreme Court plans to review two cases involving the state's new self-defense law that allows people to shoot dangerous home invaders without fear of prosecution.
The National Rifle Association had championed the measure enacted in 2006, saying it simply codified a rule of law already observed by judges in Kentucky and elsewhere: That people have a right to use deadly force to defend themselves and their families when their lives are in danger. |

The fact that the bullet wound location is in the back of the dead individual does not necessarily contradict claims of self-defense. There have been recorded examples of attackers quite rapidly turning when they notice that their victim (in some cases police officers) is shooting them or preparing to do so, resulting in the bullet hitting somewhere on the attacker's back side, and the victim is unable to react quickly enough to not finish pulling the trigger when the attacker is turning, or as in some cases, it has already been pulled. |

Recently, members of the Massachusetts Senate were handed two golden opportunities to (1) demonstrate an understanding of the oath they took upon entering office, and (2) to follow the example set by the House of Representatives in a bipartisan move to reduce the onerous tax imposed on your right to self defense. The senate failed on both counts.
Stephen M. Brewer, D-Barre, said he would support the proposal to lower the fee (tax), but he did not know how it would fare in the senate. Donald F. Humason Jr., R-Westfield, said "its the right thing to do. We're talking about a constitutionally guaranteed freedom to keep and bear arms." |

Thank goodness one digit wasn't the difference between life and death for two Bay County Sheriff's deputies and an innocent man.
Last Wednesday morning, a private security company employee and a 9-1-1 dispatcher teamed up to inadvertently give a wrong address to deputies who were investigating a home alarm that had been tripped. The address was off by one number - it was the house across the street. Deputies entered the wrong home, found 19-year-old Ryan Flock sleeping in bed and drew their weapons. Flock awoke and found himself staring down a gun barrel. Thankfully, he remained calm and the officers were able to confirm his identity and determine they were in the wrong place. |

Most importantly for McCain, the two constituencies who are most energized by Palin just happen to be the two grassroots pillars of the GOP: anti-abortion activists and pro-Second Amendment enthusiasts and sportsmen. Without these two camps making phone calls, stuffing envelopes and knocking on doors, Republican presidential candidates would severely lack for volunteers. They are critical to the health of the conservative coalition that has dominated Republican politics for a generation. |

John McCain claims to be pro Second Amendment, but the Gun Owners of America rated McCain F minus in 2004 and 2006 that, by the way, is the worst possible grade. The N.R.A. president has termed McCain the "worst Second Amendment candidate."
He claims to be the value voters' candidate, but he calls conservative leaders "agents of intolerance." He publicly endorsed homosexual civil unions (which, whether he likes it or not, is marriage by another name.) He committed the worst of betrayals when he left his handicapped wife and mother of his three children for a woman 24 years younger than him. |

Spurred by fear of a violent attack or because they have actually survived one more Washingtonians are getting a concealed pistol license. The license, or CPL, allows them to travel with a hidden gun among an unknowing public. License holders jumped from about 179,000 to 258,000, 43 percent, between 2003 and 2007. The state Department of Licensing says permit applications in Kitsap County jumped from 1,587 in 2004 to 3,339 in 2007.
Ed.: Back of the napkin estimate: 258,000 CPL holders is about 5% of those 21 years old or older. |

A gun rights group is calling on Gov. Ed Rendell to "order a halt to unlawful police-state tactics at presidential campaign events" after a Beaver County man was arrested Friday for openly carrying a gun near where Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama later made an appearance.
The group, OpenCarry.org, accused state police of suspending the right to bear arms in Beaver by arresting John Noble, 50, of Industry....
OpenCarry.org says Noble was not at the Obama event, did not attempt to enter the event area and broke no law. |

Reactions from Christian conservatives were not the only reactions that were positive. Gun enthusiasts, such as Michael Bane, declares, "She's one of us. FINALLY, we can get 100 percent behind the Republican ticket ... change we can believe in! You know I've had my problems with McCain, but he has reached out a hand to us both at the NRA Annual Meeting [earlier this year] and with the amazing selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate." The Politico notes many more reactions in their article from a variety of people, showing a base that is finally "electrified" and excited about this election season. |

I believe Gov. Sarah Palin ought to help John McCain with the Republican Partys conservative base because she has a lock on two things vital to conservatism: guns and God.
Guns because she is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and grew up hunting moose with her father.
...
As for hunting moose, that strikes me about like hunting cows, if you have ever seen a moose in the wild. But I suppose its the idea that counts. Hunting shows that youre a red-blooded American who treasures his Second Amendment right to tote a gun rather than some bird-watching tree-hugger with a solar panel on his roof. |

From a Republican standpoint, Palin is quite appealing. She is a limited-government fiscal conservative (something that is in short supply in the GOP these days), pro-life, pro-Second Amendment and pro-drilling for more oil. She has a reputation for being a tough political in-fighter and has notably stood against the Alaskan pipeline of Republican corruption, namely Sens. Ted Stevens and Don Young. She also rejected the state's infamous "Bridge to Nowhere," which symbolized Washington's out-of-control pork-barrel spending. She is a fresh face in a party that is desperate for new blood. |

We are suffering a preemptive video arrest. For those that don't know, I-Witness Video was remarkably successful in exposing police misconduct and outright perjury by police during the 2004 RNC. Out of 1800 arrests, at least 400 were overturned based solely on video evidence which contradicted sworn statements which were fabricated by police officers. It seems that the house arrest we are now under and the possible threat of the seizure of our computers and video cameras is a result of the 2004 success. |

Traci McKay was horrified when, on the first day of school last week, her 14-year-old daughter bounded through the front door of their home and breathlessly demanded, "Which teachers are carrying guns?"
It was a fair question. The girl's rural North Texas school district had authorized some teachers to carry concealed pistols to class, the first district in the state, and perhaps the nation, to do so. |

Putting guns in the hands of schoolteachers, as the Texas school district of Harrold has done, illustrates the self-destructiveness of a gun-happy society. It will surely put students at greater risk, even as its proponents claim to be protecting them from a Columbine-style massacre.
To arm teachers is to add risk in two ways: directly, by introducing guns into the school; and indirectly, by teaching young people that they should up the ante on violence if they wish to be safe. |

Any feminist for Hillary would never vote for a "hot babe" (as Palin has been designated on a variety of media channels). A radical feminist would fetch a man's slippers rather than vote for a seriously pro-life, Christian woman with traditional ideals who has her babies, totes a gun and supports the Second Amendment's right to bear arms. Who cares about Hillary supporters since they are all liberals? Shouldn't we be more concerned about uniting the conservative base on social issues? We should only focus on the women's vote as it pertains to GOP women. |

Residents here who buy a gun to keep legally at home, now that the Supreme Court has overturned the citys ban on handguns, will find that a bureaucratic maze leads them to an unmarked door on Good Hope Road Southeast where Charles W. Sykes Jr. does business.
Mr. Sykes does not sell guns, but on Tuesday he is expected to become the only federally licensed dealer in Washington to serve as the transfer agent for the carefully controlled transactions that will put guns in the hands of district residents. |

Author Peter Manso was indicted on Friday by a Barnstable grand jury on gun charges. The charges are the result of the confiscation by Truro Police of weapons from Mansos home on Long Nook Drive.
The police saw the weapons when they responded to a burglar alarm in late December, while Manso was in California. They returned the next day with a warrant and seized three unlicensed weapons a snub nose .38 revolver, a .22 caliber rifle and a Colt AR15 government carbine, an assault weapon, with a 30-round clip. Possession of the assault weapon carries a possible 10-year prison sentence and up to a $10,000 fine. |

It is certainly a question worth asking. Let's look at the people involved. John McCain, the Republican nominee for President, only has a "C" rating with the National Rifle Association (NRA). He has even been described as "one of the premier flag carriers for the enemies of the Second Amendment" by the them! Not only that, McCain has earned the NRA's anger with his campaign finance reform that limits their ability to support candidates. He's on thin ice with them to say the least. The Libertarian Party candidate for President, Bob Barr, on the other hand, was a member of the NRA's Board of Directors. He also has an A+ rating with them. |

Bill Barrows of Binghamton broke 98 of 100 targets to tie as high gun among 23-24 yard line competitors at last Saturday's Grand American Handicap Championships, then finished as runner-up at that yardage when he lost a shoot-off, 24-23 to Wisconsin shooter Andy Knuesel. Two days previously Barrows broke 98 to win the 23-24-yard championship in the Aug. 21 President's Handicap event at the Grand American championships in Sparta, IL. |
