A shooting on Saturday that claimed the life of a 25-year-old Olympia man appears at this time to be a legitimate act of self-defense, Grays Harbor Undersheriff Rick Scott said this morning.
Westin Wolff was shot and killed at a remote campsite on Wynooche Lake early Saturday morning. The name of the person who shot Wolff is not being released.
While the Sheriffs Office is investigating Wolffs death as a homicide, Scott said the shooting appears to have been justified. |

A Nashville, TN man used his gun to fend off two robbers who broke into his home Saturday night.
Police say that two robbers broke in to the man's home on Lindy Murff Ct. The homeowner grabbed his self defense gun and shot one of the home invaders in the chest. Both criminals then fled to a nearby gas station, and tried to claim that they were themselves the victims of a robbery. The wounded criminal was taken to a local hospital, and is expected to survive and face charges. The unwounded criminal has been arrested. The homeowner was unharmed. |

Two brothers who were shot and stabbed to death in a Carondelet Street apartment late Sunday night were killed in apparent self-defense, New Orleans police said.
Carlos Calderon, 39, and Luis Calderon, 26, were found dead around 11:15 p.m. Sunday in an apartment at 1132 Carondelet Street. Two other men, a 38-year-old and a 31-year-old, were found in the apartment with multiple stab wounds.
...
The roommates also armed themselves with knives and a handgun, and they managed to defend themselves by stabbing and shooting the men, police said.
Homicide detectives and representatives from the District Attorney's Office met Monday and determined that the men's actions were justified. |

Here in Utah the PHC [Patrick Henry Caucus] is engaged in drafting laws that will hopefully take back states rights and powers in the area of education and in transportation. Herrod and the other especially feel that the government is trying to overturn the Second Amendment concerning the ownership of firearms.
They are looking at the laws recently passed by Montana and Tennessee that state that federal regulations concerning firearms do not apply to firearms, ammunition and accessories that are manufactured in, and stay within their respective state boundries. The Caucus hopes to draft a similar law next year. |

Gun control cannot accomplish its goals in a free society without misleading the people. Part of the duty observers like your Gun Rights Examiners enjoy fulfilling is educating the readership about various frauds, errors, and outright lies in media when it comes to our liberty seemingly unrelated to the second amendment. You can sort which is which in my answer to Albert Lea Tribunes article over the weekend, The price America pays to own guns is lives, by David Larson. |

Eddie Clark, chairman of the Franklin County Commission, has a permit to carry a handgun in Tennessee.
...
We only have one park, Dry Creek Beach on Tims Ford Lake, and I saw no reason to carry a gun there, said Mr. Clark, who voted against allowing guns in the park. I have a permit, and there are some parks where its OK to bring a gun, but not there with all those kids.
When the vote was called, commissioners split 8-8 and the motion to restrict weapons failed.
As of today, gun permit holders can take weapons to Dry Creek Beach and hundreds of other parks across the state. Seven of 10 counties in Southeast Tennessee are allowing guns in parks. |

The ban on firearms will still be in effect at Percy Warner and other Metro parks. But starting at midnight, permit holders will be allowed to carry firearms in parks that chose not to opt of the state law.
Mt. Juliet, Fairview, Columbia and Gallatin are just a few places that will allow them. But in places like Nashville and Murfreesboro, the ban may be short-lived.
"Ultimately, it's going to be for the Legislature to open up the local parks as a matter of state law. That way, there's a uniform statewide policy that's consistent with the state parks and the federal parks," said John Harris, executive director of the Tennessee Firearms Association.
State lawmakers will try to allow guns in all parks next session. |

Authorities say a man who shot and killed two men and wounded another in a Sacramento apartment early Monday was acting in self-defense.
Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Curran says authorities declined to arrest the 26-year-old man after witnesses reported that the three men confronted the man outside his apartment, then broke in and continued the attack after he had retreated inside.
Investigators say during the attack, the man retrieved a handgun and shot all three attackers. |

Each word of the Constitution was, indeed, carefully chosen, and this one is no exception. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, militia was defined in 1777 as the whole body of men declared by law amenable to military service, without enlistment, whether armed and drilled or not.
The definition our Founding Fathers considered when selecting this word does not limit militia to only those with experience in the military and/or law enforcement. It would be counter-intuitive if it did. How could ordinary citizens defend themselves against government interference if only those from government entities (military, law enforcement) were qualified to bear arms, according to Enochs suggestion? |

Bar and restaurant owners are scrambling to post new signs banning firearms in their establishments before a new concealed-carry law takes effect this month.
Starting Sept. 29, gun owners with permits to carry concealed weapons will be able to take their weapons into establishments that serve liquor, so long as they do not drink.
The state's 5,900 bars and restaurants that sell alcohol can ban firearms at their establishments but only if they post a conspicuous sign advertising the ban.
Sen. Ken Cheuvront said he has been trying for "weeks" to get a sign from the Arizona Department of Liquor License and Control, which is distributing free signs to licensees. |

More than 300 concerned citizens attended a recent open carry picnic at the St. Croix County Fairgrounds. Many participants came to the gathering with a pistol strapped to their waist.
The Tribune Press Reporter reports that Dave and Annette Olson of Glenwood City organized the event as a way to inform people about their right to carry firearms, as provided in the second amendment of the Constitution. With the help of friends, the Olsons organized the event and provided all of the food for the picnic. A donation bucket was also there to offset expenses. |

Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics show that in states with more gun control, Blacks are hindered from defending their lives, while Whites are not.
After extracting civilian justifiable homicide data from the FBI Supplement Homicide reports for 2000-2007, there are clear inequities between Blacks and Whites in states which restrict the right of self-defense by not granting concealed carry permits to law-abiding citizens. Conversely, in right-to-carry (RTC) stateswhere law-abiding civilians carry concealed handguns in publicBlacks experienced above-average rates of justifiable homicide. |

The video shows the officer stunning Harmon with two Taser shots. Harmon was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and driving 50 mph in a 45 mph zone. The charges were dismissed, and Harmon sued the sheriff's department in early August.
In his e-mail, Andrews writes that he stopped Harmon because it appeared that she was talking on her cell phone and appeared to be speeding. He said he decided to use the Taser based on his training because Harmon defied his orders and because he couldn't see her hands at certain points during the stop. |

School children in some Chautauqua County schools will learn gun safety through the National Rifle Association's Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program. The program is endorsed by John Bentley, Lakewood-Busti police chief, and is approved by the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office and used throughout the United States since 1989. Greg DiMaio, a local NRA volunteer, and his wife, Donna, an area teacher, have obtained state grant money to bring the Eddie Eagle GunSafe program to Chautauqua County. The grant provides money to supply schools, law enforcement agencies, hospitals, day care centers, libraries and youth service organizations with student, teacher and parent materials free of charge. |

Jordan Chusid, a transfer student who originally attended UCF, was just about to leave campus after his first day attending University of Miami. Then he got an ol' Miami-style welcome: a gun to the head.
Last Wednesday, he was talking on his cell phone when cops ran up to him with guns drawn and ordered him to get down on the ground. Apparently, Chusid matched the identity of a suspect who stole a motorcycle from the law school earlier in the day. Why cops decided they needed to point their weapons at an unarmed kid casually walking through campus, suspect or not, isn't clear. |

Your Aug. 24 editorial, "Making a Point at Gunpoint," completely misses the point and indulges in misdirection. The editorial states that a gun's "place is in the woods for hunting, at the range for target shooting, or in an appropriate place at home for self-defense." Self-defense does not just take place at home; it takes place wherever you may be. |

The argument that nuclear weapons can be agents of peace as well as destruction rests on two deceptively simple observations. First, nuclear weapons have not been used since 1945. Second, there's never been a nuclear, or even a nonnuclear, war between two states that possess them. Just stop for a second and think about that: it's hard to overstate how remarkable it is, especially given the singular viciousness of the 20th century.
------------
Submitters Note: Oh the unintentional irony. Newsweek acknowledges that a strong deterrent like nuclear weapons is effective at stopping attacks on a nation while it argues that a strong deterrent like gun ownership cannot be effective at stopping the rape of a 100 pound woman. |

About once a year, Mitchell County Sheriff Curt Younker pulls the machine gun out of its display case, goes to a shooting range and lets a round go.
This is a Thompson submachine gun but there was a time when everyone knew it by its nickname: Tommy gun.
In the 1930s, rural counties were given the guns to help them fight gangsters, Younker said, feeling the weight of the weapon. |
