It didn't take long for gun rights supporters to organize after the governor signed the gun package. With the help of the NRA, groups across the state attempted to gather signatures to recall a four state senators.

Activists, however, collected the required amount of signatures in only two districts, those represented by Morse and Giron. Morse's district is largely a swing district, with nearly four in 10 active voters being unaffiliated with a political party. Thirty-four percent are registered Democrats and 26% are registered Republicans. Giron's district has a larger Democratic presence.

Im very pleased with the district attorney. The job of a district attorney is not just to prosecute but to see that justice is served, she said.

And, in this case, she said, justice was served.

It was self-defense. It was clearly self-defense from the very beginning, the attorney said.

The motion to dismiss included information that an independent investigation had been initiated by the special prosecutors office and that investigation revealed evidence that wasnt available to the Mooresville Police Department or the district attorneys office.

There was no indication in the paperwork what that evidence was, and Hamilton-Dewitt said she didnt know either.

Police determined Irish was lawfully open-carrying and that the gun was never waved, nor removed from its holster. New Hampshire law allows open-carrying of firearms without a license, while a license is required to carry a concealed gun.

One of the charges against Irish states he refused to wait in a clinic waiting room and went into an employee-only area while carrying a firearm on his person and yelling. The other charge alleges Irish risked breaching the peace or causing alarm by making loud and unreasonable noises in the OB/GYN practice by yelling profanities.

The upcoming veto session could prove a lively one for Missouri, but in the end, the veto that stands the best chance of being overridden would lead to a law that will get shot full of holes by the courts.

House Bill 436 has a lot of worrisome pieces, but at its heart it would invalidate major federal gun regulations and make it a crime for federal officials to enforce them in the state.

At its heart, then, this bill is flawed.

Does anyone really believe its a good idea for Missouri or any state for that matter to start declaring which federal laws it believes it has to follow and which ones it doesnt? Weve been here before, and it didnt end well.

News is flashing across the wires that George Zimmerman, acquitted two months ago in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, was detained today after his estranged wife, Shellie, reportedly called police asserting that Zimmerman threatened her with a firearm, but police are apparently not certain what actually happened.

A late news report says that he is no longer being detained. The Daily Mail now says Zimmerman has left the scene and that Shellie Zimmerman and her father are refusing to press charges. That appears to be confirmed by CBS News. And late in the afternoon, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Shellie Zimmerman changed her story and said she never actually saw Zimmerman with a gun.

The fatal shooting of an unarmed man by a now-fired Phoenix police officer wasn't self-defense despite his claims that he feared for his life, a prosecutor told jurors Monday.

Deputy Maricopa County Attorney Juan Martinez said during his closing argument at Richard Chrisman's murder trial that the officer was the aggressor in the October 2010 incident.

Chrisman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, aggravated assault and animal cruelty. He maintains that the shootings of 29-year-old Daniel Rodriguez and his pit bull were justified because Rodriguez reached for the officer's gun. Chrisman testified last week that he feared Rodriguez was going to "smash my brains in."

He is now entitled to a self-defense trial, the justices found.

Whats more, they ruled, judges and jurors in the future must hear both defenses as part of a single trial.

The error was in depriving defendant of his right to pursue that second part of the trial and instead committing him for treatment based on the insanity finding without ever affording him the chance to be acquitted of the crime based on his self-defense theory, the justices wrote.

At first, Angela Giron was surprised to find herself in the cross hairs of a campaign to recall Colorado lawmakers who had supported a slate of new gun-control laws. She had won her State Senate seat by a 10-point margin. Her Southern Colorado district is heavily Hispanic and reliably Democratic, hardly ideal terrain to oust a lawmaker with Mexican roots whose mother once worked picking beans.

In order to move this interminable argument over the Second Amendment forward (or perhaps just to end the moronic name-calling), let me put forward this thesis: Let us suppose for the minute that at some future fantasy date two-thirds of our nation's populace decides as the gentleman proposes, and votes to repeal said amendment. Well, then all is said and done on the federal level. Ah, then peace will reign and all will be heavenly glorious.
