Valley Metro, the Roanoke-based bus service, took heat this week from a gun rights group for a partial ban on riding with firearms.
Friday, Valley Metro defined its gun policy as prohibiting openly carried guns, but said people with a concealed handgun permit could carry the firearm on board.
Wednesday, president Philip Van Cleave of the Virginia Citizens Defense League said he told Valley Metro it had no authority to restrict firearms on its buses. Valley Metro is an arm of the city.
The only thing Roanoke can control is shooting and hunting. You can say no shooting on the bus but you cant say no open carry, Van Cleave said. |

I just think a lot of these Stand Your Ground laws need to be rewritten, Clinton said. If somebody is breaking into your home and you are in imminent danger, or you go to your door and you see something that is deeply concerning, well, first thing you should do is call 911, Clinton said.
When you have 24/7/365 taxpayer-funded Secret Service protection for lifelike Clinton hasits easy to dismiss the security concerns of ordinary Americans. But the truth is that less than 5 percent of the 911 calls dispatched to police are made quickly enough for officers to stop a crime or arrest a suspectand Im willing to bet that Clinton knows that. |

Federal databases are notoriously error prone. The average data error runs close to 5 percent. In a nation of 350 million, a 5 percent error rate equals over 17 million Americans. Federal database errors can disrupt the lives and cut off opportunities for millions of innocent Americans.
Despite recent media hysteria about rising crime, the murder rate continues its long run decline. Cant this reduction in violence be at least somewhat attributed to the dramatic increase in personal handgun carry? I believe criminologist John Lott when he says more guns equals less crime. |

This is a trend. People have shot down drones in southern New Jersey and rural California as well. It's illegal, and they get arrested for it.
Technology changes everything. Specifically, it upends long-standing societal balances around issues like security and privacy. When a capability becomes possible, or cheaper, or more common, the changes can be far-reaching. Rebalancing security and privacy after technology changes capabilities can be very difficult, and take years. And we're not very good at it. |

This year a number of bills will be filed in the Florida Legislature that will have profound impact your second amendment rights.
In coming weeks we will ask you to take action in support of the pro-gun and pro-self-defense bills that are filed this legislative session. We will also ask that you stand in opposition to those bills and special interest groups who would see our constitutional right to self-defense and the defense of our families destroyed. |

On Tuesday, Bush admitted that gun violence has decreased in Florida since implementing background checks on gun purchases, but said he still wouldnt advocate for the policy to be expanded nationwide.
In Florida, where I was governor, we have a requirement of background checks, a 72-hour waiting period, Bush said in an unaired clip from the inaugural episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Were not violating any Second Amendment rights. In fact, Florida would be considered a Second Amendment, pro-gun state. Gun violence is way down. But we have simple checks to make sure that people that arent criminals are not accessing guns. |

Extremist group Gun Owners of America (GOA) endorsed Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz, noting that he is the only candidate "who has completed and returned the GOA presidential survey on the Second Amendment." GOA opposes any background checks on gun sales and advocates for guns in kindergarten classrooms, while the group's leader Larry Pratt has suggested mass shootings are staged by the government and has past ties to white supremacist and anti-Semitic organizations. |

Well the right to an individual firearm to protect yourself is a national document the Constitution so should the way that be applied be national? Colbert asked.
No. Not necessarily, Bush said and added, The Bill of Rights has a tenth amendment, which is that powers are given to the states to create policy and the federal government is not the end all and be all. Thats an important value for this country and its a federalist system that works quite well. |

Cathy Lee will be a face in the crowd today in front of the Capitol in Washington, D.C., urging Congress to pass "common-sense gun legislation" to help stem the national epidemic of gun violence.
Lee, who has a 7-year-old son, belongs to Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a group whose members have pledged to do "whatever it takes" to pass stricter gun control laws. The pledge echoes a vow made by Andy Parker, a rally speaker whose daughter- reporter Alison Parker- was shot to death last month on live television. |

Cuomo said that while New York has strong gun-registration laws and requires mental-health professionals to report any troubles with gun owners to the state, there isnt a national system to control illegal guns being sold in New York.
We need a national gun-control policy that respects the Second Amendment, allows people to have guns bona fide hunters, God bless but if youre mentally ill you should not have a gun. If you are a criminal, you should not have a gun, Cuomo continued. |

Marine officials have ruled out arming recruiters following this summer's deadly shooting rampage in Tennessee that killed five service members, but other security measures to better protect troops are in the works, the head of Marine Corps Recruiting Command told Marine Corps Times.
...
Instead, the service will implement security measures that will allow Marines to take cover or evacuate in the event of an attack, he said. Changes being considered include more security cameras, remote-locking doors, and better ballistic protection, such as movable shields or desk partitions that could protect troops from bullets. |

A triple homicide Tuesday night led to the same, sad refrain from Kansas City Mayor Sly James: Idiots with guns need to be stopped, he told the media.
James is absolutely correct. These armed people are killers who smear Kansas Citys reputation with their violent behavior.
But stopping them is easier said than done, as the mayor knows. After all, hes been down this road before.
James has been talking about the need to get guns out of the hands of certain people for much of his four-plus years in office.
A big problem: The Missouri General Assembly and Second Amendment absolutists dont want to crack down on gun violence or pass stricter laws regarding who can carry these weapons. |

Todays Washington Free Beacon also details another problem that erupted over the holiday weekend and is being heavily discussed by Second Amendment activists on social media. Back in 1993, when she was pushing her ill-fated health care plan, she told Congress that she was all for a proposed 25 percent national sales tax on firearms, insisting that it would be a way to fight violent crime at that time. She had been asked by then-Sen. Bill Bradley (D-NJ) if she would endorse the proposed tax during a hearing before the Senate Finance Committee on Sept. 30, 1993. |

What about protection though? People opposed to gun control often argue that they need firepower to protect themselves. Dont we have the right to protect our families? Cant guns do that for us? Yes, if thats your preferred decision. But, how effective is this decision if its just based out of reaction instead of detailed and rational consideration? The Committee on Law and Justice says that 43 percent of the U.S. households own firearms [and victims] in two-thirds of the occupied households were asleep, the 2.5 million figure requires us to believe burglary victims use their guns in self-defense more than 100 percent of the time. |

A Dayton woman targeted by criminals at least five times in 11 years fatally shot a man she said broke into her home Wednesday morning, the second intruder she has hit with gunfire in about two years.
The 46-year-old woman, who lives in the 200 block of Richmond Avenue, told officers the man smashed a window and entered the second floor of her Five Oaks neighborhood home. The womans brother said the intruder initially broke a first-floor window but could not get inside because of metal security bars installed after a burglary last month. |

Country music legends and Grand Ole Opry members Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers have released An American with a Remington, a song that reminds listeners what it means to be an American at a time when extremists threaten our culture.
The song was originally released in raw form via a YouTube video filmed in a dressing room in Branson, MO. That video quickly received over 5 million views. Larry was soon on his way to Fox & Friends for a national performance, which lead to the song being taken to the studio for professional production. |

It is only the fallacious belief in the Incorporation Doctrine, which interprets the Fourteenth Amendment as giving the Federal Government supreme power over all the States, that many believe the 2nd Amendment trumps a States right to regulate firearms.
It is the responsibility of the people of the States to create rules, regulations and laws that suit their needs. If a State wants to ban all handguns and its people agree, so be it. If a State wants its citizens armed with automatic weapons and its people concur, so be it. However, if the Federal Government attempts to regulate who can own firearms and what types, then the 2nd Amendment comes into play. |

In 2008 the U. S. Supreme Court ruled, choosing to ignore the well-regulated militia wording, that it was ok for individuals to pack heat. Among the five-vote majority were Republicans Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, both of whom are self-described "Originalists." Originalism is "the belief that the United States Constitution should be interpreted in the way the authors originally intended it."
It is difficult to believe that our Founding Fathers intended private citizens to own AK-47's.
Unfortunately, the NRA, the Supreme Court, and the Republican Party have combined to defeat any efforts to combat the exclusively American disease that kills 30,000 people a year.
