Five Washington, D.C. residents today filed a petition in the U.S. Supreme Court asking the court to reinstate their legal case against the District's restrictive gun laws. The five citizens, Shelly Parker, Tom Palmer, Gillian St. Lawrence, Tracey Ambeau, and George Lyon, filed a federal court challenge to the District's gun ban in 2003 along with D.C. resident Dick Heller. That lawsuit led to a historic court ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit that D.C.'s gun ban violates the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. |

In a Sept. 4 Salt Lake Tribune story, Danny Dutton of Hurricane justifiably killed a man in self-defense, but may go to prison because he used a gun he wasn't entitled to have - because he's a convicted felon.
So, in order for Danny Dutton to save his life, he had to commit another felony to defend himself. There's something wrong here.
Do convicted felons have reasonable expectations to be able to defend themselves if their lives are in danger when they're not committing a crime? If not, why not? The Second Amendment says "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." It doesn't go on to say "unless you're a convicted felon." That's something that individual states tacked on later. |

For the first time publicly, she described how, fearing for her life, she fought back.
"I got the hammer and started hitting him with the hammer several times. My father the carpenter always taught me a hammer could be used for self defense, the claw end would work the best," said Kuhnhausen.
The attacker was Ed Haffey, a drug addict who it turned out was hired by Michael Kuhnhausen to kill Susan.
"I yelled who sent you here, yelled again, who sent you here?" asked Kuhnhausen.
The plan failed as the emergency room nurse relied on her hospital self-defense training and began to bite, hit and choke Haffey. |

A tire iron-wielding man who police said was looking to mug a senior citizen probably thought he had found an easy target — that is, until the 74-year-old fought back.
Bruce Ferraro had no idea someone was following him as he walked out of a department store at the South Shore Mall on Saturday and got into his car, police said. But then a man pounded on Ferraro's window and demanded cash.
"Ferraro says, 'What, are you kidding me?' and he actually gets out of the car," said Det. Sgt. Thomas Groneman, of the Suffolk County Police Department. |

Are we really any safer by creating more restrictions on the legal sale of firearms? Creating a ban on concealed carry on college campuses? If someone in Norris Hall had been legally carrying they would have been able to stop Cho. Restricting the right to bear arms only makes it harder for law-abiding citizens to get firearms and protect themselves. There is no possible security measure that can be imposed to stop random acts of hatred like April 16. |

A high school teacher in southern Oregon plans to challenge a school district policy that prevents her from carrying a gun on school grounds.
Portland lawyer Jim Leuenberger said in an e-mail message to the Mail Tribune newspaper that he will ask a Jackson County judge to declare the Medford School District’s policy ‘‘illegal and void’’ for holders of concealed handgun licenses. When contacted by the Mail Tribune, the teacher said she wants anonymity because she fears for her and her daughter’s safety. |

"Today is the day I will be heard, today is the day that the world will feel my pain, today is the day the world will feel my anger," Caprice Fasano said on the witness stand Thursday, recalling the text message he received from Maldonado.
Maldonado's former girlfriend recounted a phone call she received from him during the chaos inside the mall.
"He said he was in Sam Goody and he was holding people hostage and shot up the mall" Tiffany Robison said. "Of course I freaked out and I asked him why and he said he was asking for help for years and I didn't help."
He told investigators that he was angry because a Lakewood police officer had ridiculed him eight years earlier at a summer camp.

When I was in college ages ago the truth in advertising and lending and such measures were high on the agenda of modern liberals. Oddly, they were the same people, usually, who declared themselves to be loyal champions of free speech, defenders of an absolutist stance on the First Amendment to the US Constitution. But not when it came to commercial speech. You know those people in commerceall chronic cheats and liars, of course. (The modern liberals hatred of commerce trumps their most cherished ideals!)

Some Ellwood City officials hope to take another shot at banning personal guns in the municipal building -- including the mayor's sidearm -- despite opposition from the National Rifle Association. The Lawrence County town of about 8,600 was one of two Western Pennsylvania communities that adopted gun restrictions on municipal property -- only to promptly rescind the controversial ordinances. Ellwood City Council President Glen Jones said a modified version of the measure will be discussed at a 6 p.m. meeting today. The session will determine if leaders want to enact the scaled-down legislation, which targets only the municipal building. |

The bursts from handguns at an indoor shooting range echo the growing number of persons in Florida carrying concealed weapons. "We get new shooters all the time," said Brian Sherman, 24, owner of E-Z Gun & Pawn Inc. and Hot Shot Indoor Shooting Range on North Nova Road. "Sometimes up to 30 new shooters a day, and on some Saturdays there can be a two-hour wait." The increase coincides with a boost in new concealed weapons licenses issued over the past five years -- up 101.6 percent from 2001 according to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Licensing. |

The number of firearms recovered in New York by police and federal agents surged last year, but the total still fell well short of the tallies recorded in the bloody early 1990s. More than 7,000 weapons, mostly handguns, were recovered in the city in 2006, up from about 6,000 a year earlier, according to data released Thursday by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). That tally included weapons found at crime scenes, captured from suspects, confiscated from unlicensed owners or simply discovered on the street. |

"CLEVELAND (AP) -- Mayor Frank Jackson wants the Ohio General Assembly to pass legislation prohibiting anyone under age 21 from possessing a firearm."
"Jackson made the proposal at a news conference Monday following the death of 12-year-old Asteve'e "Cookie" Thomas, who was hit by a stray bullet from a street gunfight as she walked to a corner store on Sept. 1."
"Jackson cited city police statistics showing that, from 2004 to 2006, 70 percent of those arrested for crimes involving firearms were under age 28."
Submitters notes: One of the men wanted for the murder of Asteve'e is 35. What does the "under 28" statistic have to do with a new 'under 21" law?

California Assembly Bill 1471 passed both the House and the Senate and is expected to be forwarded to Governor Arnold at any time. The bill would, "expand the definition of 'unsafe handgun' to include semiautomatic pistols that are not designed and equipped with a microscopic array of characters that identify the make, model, and serial number of the pistol, etched in 2 or more places on the interior surface or internal working parts of the pistol, and that are transferred by imprinting on each cartridge case when the firearm is fired." |
